THE STAIN OF It Can Never be "Wasl This thing of taking the life of a human being except in self-defence, during excitement or on tbs field of battle, ?B a terrible thing and unless a nian be hardened into brutality and is utterly devoid of conscience- it will haunt him to his dying day. Three times during my oareoVlhave deliberately made up my mind to kill, but determined to make my antagon ists first the assailants and to give them a fair showing, and thus put my own life in jeopardy. But when the necessity for any suoh encounter had passed the feeling of relief wue inde scribable. Thousands upon thousands of use ful and brilliant lives have been blighted and rendered miserable by the taking of human life; and oven' when the killing was justified in the sight of both man and by the laws of tho land, tho curse of Gain followed the slayer his entire days. My father, I think, was with tho Hon. Wm. L. Yancey, the great Seces sion leader, when ho killed Dr. Earle, of Greenville. They were boys to gether, wero warm friends, and I have often heard my father speak of the circumstance. Yancey killed Earle as tho latter was advancing upon him with an upraised walking cane, and when the fatal shot was fired. Just before the beginning of the late war between tho States my father and Mr. Yancey met in Montgomery, Ala. Mr. Yancey, in discussing the -tragedy, stated that he had no intention of shooting Dr. Earle, but the encounter took plaoe in the piazza of the post office, an old wooden building oppo site the Mansion House in Greenville, and v.'hioh piazza had no railing, be ing several feet from the ground. Dr. Earle attacked Mr. Yanooy beoause he had slapped the face of his little son, Elias, there being no very kind feel ing between the two men. Dr. Earle raised his cane and advanced on Mr. Yancey, who drew his pistol, present ed it and ! retreated backward. Mr. Yancey stated that he had no inten tion of shooting tho Doctor, but want ed to intimidate him. Tn stepping : backward-he felt that he had roached ; the extreme end of the piazza and, in order to prevent falling off, had inad- ; vertently pressed the trigger. But, 1 this great Southern statesman told my i father he would freely give fame, for- 1 tune and all he possessed an i again < start life a poor, ignorant and obscure | man, could he, by so doing, only wipe i that blood from his hands; that often, i in the midst of his most brilliant Ora- ?j tiona,* would he see the figure of Pr. ; Earle, as he appeared with that up? 1 raised cane and when the tragedy was enacted, rise before him. Years after the killing, when Mr. Yanoey returned to visit his mother-in-law, Mrs. Earle, in Greenville, and Elias 'had grown to manhood, the young man, who had in nocently caused the death of his fath er, appeared before the, gate with shot gun in hand and asked to see Colonel Yancey- Yanoey, from behind the closed door, told Elias togo away and ho would return, to Alabama and not visit" Greenville again; ; that he had more of the Earle blood then upon his hands than he could ever wash; : away and did not want an; more. That tho horror of that tragedy, committed on a little island in the Savannah Uiver, haunted this great and good man all of his days, is not doubted, an?t it cast a dark cloud over a brilliant and useful life. I have known a great many men who had taken human life, under all manner of circumstances, and without a single exception they wore the brand of Gain upon their brows. There was no pleasures or happiness in life for them. Their existence was one long reigu of remorse and self-reproach, and if they did not manifest the same by word of mouth, it could be seen in tho restless eye, and nervous starting at every unusual noise. Many turned for consolation to drink, and which only added fuel to the internal fires that ever burned within them. Oth ers proppered, but during those inter vals when the mind was permitted to wander back to tho past, a look of haggard misery o'erspread their faces, ^he brand of Cain was fixed upon tho brows of those shedders of human blood by Divine vengeance, and only death could erase it. I remember, while living in Ogle thorpe County, Georgia, talking with a young friend of mine who had gone with a party to chastise a negro for a reported insult to a white woman. This young man was stationed at a window, through which the negro endeavored to escape. He fired on the negro and shot him dead, his body hanging over the sill. This young mao, who was'a successful merchant, stated to me that he afterwards discovered that he had killed an innocent and slandered negro, and the party who had made up that, story was enraged against the ne gro beoausc he intended to leave his farm and ho wanted to have him chas tised. But my young friend stated to mo that his whole lifo was blighted, and his entire existence ono of misery and remorse; that the sight of the poor negro haunted him all day long and was a constant nightmare. Free ly would he give up all he possessed, Etnd become a convict in stripes, to have that stain washed away from his oonsoienoe. He often felt that did he possess the wealth of the world he would freely give it for even one day's relief from the agony of mind that pursued him, and that he might ex perience the feeling of innocence he ?snow before that wretohed eight. \ Were this globe of ours coined into gold, and plaoed at my disposal to take thc lifo of the most debased end mis erable human being that walks the aarth, even under the most justifiable 3*troumBtanoe8, I would acorn 'the bribe. Unless a man, ab I have stated, has % heart seared with sin, and is incapa ble of feeling renorse, I sometimes think it would be an act of morey and kindness for the laws of his country bo put him to death, after wilfully and deliberately taking the life of a follow man. A jury may acquit him, and he may live a long life, applaud 3d and honored by the world, bnt there beats in his breast an inner monitor, and which will ever keep him reminded of that dark deed. A young man in his shirt sleeves and a straw hat was observed, one of the hottest afternoons this week, wheeliog a baby carriage baokward and forward in front of one of the small houses in the vicinity of Fair mount Park. He appeared hot but happy, "My dear," came a voice from ono of the upper windows of tho house. "Let me alone, can't you?" he call ed back, and went on wheeliog and mopping his face. An hour later thc samo voice carno from the window in earnest and plead ing tones, "George dear!" "Well, what on earth do you want?" he asked, "have the water pipes burst?" C., a brother of Ensign Worth Bagley, who was killed in tho Spanish-American war, tells of a tar-heel farmer who was inclined to look on tho bright side of things. "Tho man was at work on land so poor that you couldn't raise your hat on it, when a stranger pass ed," said Mr. Bagley, "and asked him about tho crop prospects." Tho far mer seemed to be depressed and final ly the stranger expressed sympathy with him and his condition.
