"What force least expected does the
greatest damage to buildings?" a News
representative asked of a well knowu
architect.
"It is di??oult to tell. But I will
venture to say that you would never
expect violin playing to injure .he
walls of a building. Yet that is cer
tainly the case. There have been in
stances when the walls of brick and
stone structures have been seriously !
impaired by the vibrations of a violin. '
Of course, these cases are unusual,
but tho facts are established. The |
vibrations u.f a violin are something
terrible in their unseen, unbound
force, and when they come in contact
with regularity they bear their influ
ence upon structures of stone, brick
or iron. Of course, it takes continu
ous playing for many years to loosen
masonry or to make iron brittle, but
that result is obtained. lu thc great
Masonic Temple in Chicago I have
thought of what the result might be if
a man would stand on thc first floor at
thc bottom of the 19-story light well,
and there play continuously. The re
sult could bc more easily aeon there
than almost any place else, because
thc vibration gathers forceas it sweeps
upward. A man can feel the vibra
tion of a violin on an ironclad oceau
vessel, and at the same time be unable
to bea- the music. It i? the regulari
ty of the.vibration which means so
much. Jiike the constant dripping of
water wearing away a stone, the inces
sant vibration of a violin makes its
way to the walls aud attacks their so
lidity."
"But why doesn't the vibration ef
fect the player?"
''Because a man is a flexible object.
He oan gir-> way to motion and resume
his place again. A frame building
would not be damaged by vibration,
because the timbers are flexible. But
it is different with masonry.
"You may have noticed that a dog
crossing the room will shake the entire
building, no matter how small the dog.
A dog oan shake a suspension bridge.
There ore some great and valuable
bridges which dogs are never allowed
to croea, except when carried. You
see, in that case it is the regularity of
the vibration that is so powerful. The
dog's movement is a fixed and positive
institution. The first step on the
bridge is not noticed so much, but
every step comes at the same interval,
and with the same firmness. The
foroe gathers momentum, and each
step makeB the bridge sway more. But
there is another way that it may per
haps be illustrated better. Aa you sit
there rise one foot partially on tiptoe.
That's it. Now work your knee up
and down rapidly and regularly. See
how everything in the room rattles and
the floor shakes? That illustrates the
dog step's power better than anything
else. You and I and all our friends
oould not jump up and down in this
room and shake the floor as you have
just shaken it while sitting down and
using only the force of one leg. It is
the regularity of the vibration whioh
is powerful."

Stammering Prisoner.
Judge Pimbrick, of Arizona, while
visiting a New Yorker a few weeks
ago, relates an amusing experience
which he had in his younger days when
presiding over a police court in a south
western town. His story is something
like this.
One morning an Irish policeman
brought a man named Sisson up
for trial. The man stuttered, and
when asked his name, he stammered
out, "S-s-s-s-s-sia,'' and then gave it
up.
Again I asked his name. "S-s-s-s
sis," the Game futile attempt.
After a few more efforts to obtain
his name, which called forth more
:'sisse?," I turned impatiently to the
policeman and asked: "What is thia
prisoner charged with, officer?"
"I don't know for certain, yer
honor," he replied, his eyes twink
ling, "but I suppose it must be soda
water."-Chicago Tribune.

Counterfeit Foods. l
Senator McGumoer, of North l>.i- ?
kola, is making strenuous efforts to
secure pure food legislation that will j
be practical aud effective.
There is on the Senate calendar a
bill iotrodused by him which is oue of
tho host measured of the kind yet of
fered. It has received thc hearty en
dorsement of a great part of the press
of the country und its passage is re
commended by a number of societies
and organizations, which should have
large influence. lu one of his speech
es in advocacy of this measure Sena
tor McCuinber expressed his surprise
that while our law against counterfeit
ing money is so severe and so thor
oughly enforced, thousands of persons
are counterfeiting food products of al
most every kind with absolute impu
nity, and are permitted to work off
their impure, and often dangerous,
stuff in inereasiug ?luantities in every
section of the country.
The reports of tho Federal and State j
officials who have looked into tho j
matter of food adulterations show sueh ?
articles are consumed to au extent j
that will surprise those who have never '
studied t ic subject.
Some of the S?ates have laws in
tended to preveut the adulteration of
articles of food and drink, but we have
as yet neither State nor Federal laws
which can be called effective to any
marked degree for the suppression of
the impure food traffic, but the de
mand for such legislation is growing
so fast that we may expect to see a
decided reform in this respect before
