PENRHYN ISLAND,
Otra of th? Pearl studded Fairy Ringa
of the Pacific.
Penrhyn appeared one morning
on the northern horizon, a band of
dim shadow above tho ocean. On
these narrow islands you eeo tho
dark line of the palm tree fronda at
a distance, but not the stems, so
that the land seems to hang between
sea and sky. Penrhyn is one of
those .^oscillating atolls, tho fairy
rings of the Pacific, that have been
formed by tho subsidence of the
land, while only the coral reef that
once encircled it remains, and the
great circular lagoon takes the
place of the island that was. The
islands are not moro than ten feet
high.
Tho famous pearl island was sup
posed to have been, discovered by
the ship Lady Penrhyn in 1788.
Lieutenant Hignold of the Porpoise,
who visited it in 1841, stated that
its inhabitants were the wildest and
most savage looking beings he had
ever seen: Tho island was subse
quently visited by traders and in
1888 was formally annexed to Great
Britain.
Penrhyn is one pf the most fa
mous pearl islands of the Pacific,
and its divers are as famous as its
pearls. They will dive to a depth of
twenty fathoms, or 120 feet. The
pearl shell grows to a very large
size in the lagoon, and the picked
shell is worth $1,000 n ton in the
home market. Formerly pearls
were more plentiful. On one occa
sion Messrs. Godeffroy, the famous
German firm, shipped to Europe in
one parcel pearls to the value of
$20,000, the product of a few
months' collection among the is
lands, and ixl the early days the
beach combers who were daring
enough to land on those remote is
lands and who managed to escape
the ovens of the cannibals often
realized great sums of "money by
the sale of parcels of these gems,

Grant'* First Dollar.
General Wilson told the story of
how General Grant earned hi a first
dollar. He was a little chap living
in. Mount Pleasant, O., when the
circus came to town. Like every
other boy that could raise a quarter,
he went to the show. One ot the at
tractions was a trick mule, and $1
was offered to any one who could
ride the mule around the ring 'with
out being thrown. After all the
other volunteers had failed Grant
tried, with the same result. "I want
to try again," he insisted. "All
right, sonny," said the circus man,
and this time the boy reversed his
position and held on by tho mule's
tail, which so astonished the animal
that it failed to rid itself of its bur
den, and young Grant won the dol
lar. _

PLENTY OF TIME,
Story of the Mississippi River
Round About St. Louis.
"St. Louis is the great city of the
ississippi. As Chicago is to the
lakes and New York is to tho At
lantic seaboard so is St. Louis to the
Mississippi. At tho commercial di
viding of the upper and lower
streams it stands, almost at the di
vision of Bummer and winter in the#
valley, and all things along tho river' ?
date from it," says John Swain in
'Ainslee's. "Part of the lower river
looks to New Orleans, especially as
a social capital. From the Crescent
City go grcit strings of vessels for
tho Bod and the Ouachita. From
St. Louis goes tho commerce of the
valley, and to St. Louis flows tho
stream of wealth that commerce be
gets. Chicago has passed and out
I stripped its former" rival, and tho
eastern and western streams of com
merce pass far north of it. But tho
traffic of the south remains with St.
Louis, which understands it and
takes toll on all that passes up and
down tho valley of the river. For
i,500 miles the Sc. Louis drummer
is alone in his glory.
"On the upper stream, vhero tho
railway runs beside the river, there
is much northern hurry and bus
tle. But St. Louis is conducted
on the plan of a Mississippi river
steamer-plenty of time for all. Be
low there I have seen a St. Louis
drummer, minus grip and cases, hail
a steamer at a way landing, and
when the vessel had been brought to
bank the captain has graciously
kept her waiting while the drum
mer hunted up a wagon to send aft
er his baggage. As no wagon was
to bc found, the steamer's captain
obligingly turned her around and
took her back up strenm a mile,
where the drummer's trunks and
grip were on the levee at the cud o?
a logging railway.
"'Time,' said the captain when
the drummer thanked him. If wc
had as much of everything as wc
got o' time, we'd all bc rich down
here.'
"That spirit of time and kindnest
prevails in all the relations bctwcci
St. Louis and the south and is 1
Strong bond between tho city enc
its market. It is a proud, handsome
.city, and its future greatness is onlj
to be limited by the development 0:
the Mississippi."

"Thank you, doctor," replied th

"Certainly you can."

Did Dickens Spoil the Market?
Publishers receive frequent appli
cations from foreigners, chienV
French and German, for permissioi
to translate American stories anc
novels into other languages for pub
lication abroad. Usually the per
mission is cheerfully granted b;
author and publisher, but the com
pensation involved is scarcely
worthy of consideration. Some au
thors hold Charles Dickens partially
responsible for the precedent whicl
established this rule of low pricei
for translation privileges. Whei
Dickens sold thc French rights 0:
"David Copperfield" to Messrs. Ha
chette of Paris, he received therefo:
only ?20. But whether this estab
lished the rule or not it is certaii
that no author has since been abl<
