Local News. WEDNESDAY, MAY 7, 1902. The Democra?ic Convention. The Anderson County D?mocratie Con vention convened in the Court House last Monday and waa called to order promptly at 12 o'clock by Coonty Chair man John E. Breazeale, who, in a few appropriate remarks, explained the object of the meeting. In eloaing bia remarks Mr. Breazeale stated that be bad served as County Chairman three successive terms, during which time he bad endeavored to discharge his duties faithfully and impar tially, and would therefore decline re election, giving several valid reasons for so doing. The first business in order was the election of a President and Secretaries of the Convention. Mr. Breazeale was nomi nated for President and W. II. Shearer and C. C. Langston Secretaries, and these gentlemen were elected to their positions by acclamation. The roll of Clubs wan thon called and the names of the delegates unrolled. Of the thirty-eight Clubs in tho County all but nine of them were represented. The Presidont announced that the elec tion of County Chairman io serve tho ensuing two years was next in order and he wan ready to hear nominations. Capt. H. H. Watkins was nominated, and there being no other nominations ho WAH unan imously elected by acclamation. l or the position of member ol'tho State Exe cutlve Committee Hon. .1. Perry Glenn was nomlnaiod and unumiously re-elect ed by acclamation a? ins own buccessor. Hon. J. Permission was asked and granted for the organization ol a Club at the Helton Cotton Mills. Evans Pharmacy. Anderson Twine .Mill. The advancement being made in An derson in industrial development does not depend entirely upon ? combina tion of capital subscribed by many. There is now in course of erection just outside the city limits, west, alongside of the Hine Kidge Railroad, a mill for the manufacture of cotton wrapping twine, which, when completed and equipped, will cost not less than $2."S,000, furnish employment for &i op eratives and uso in manufacture daily five bales of cotton. This industry is tho venture of one man, Mr. H. C. Townsend, and illustrates the confi dence felt at home in tho results to be obtained from the development of Southern resources. Tho mill business is not new to Mr. Townsend. Ile has already achieved success in managing a planing mill and lumber supply business in this city. The ?structure of the Twine mill will be of brick, 140x80 feet, two stories, with a complement often or twelve cottages to house the operatives. The machinery used will be almost identi cal with that used by our yarn mills, a change of the guage to manufacture the coarse thread or twine bi wig about the only difference. There will be used as machinery un opener, picker system, cards, roll drawing machines, slubbers, intermediates, speeders, twisters, reels, hailing machines, ?Vc. Bapid headway is being made toward completing this mill. A brick machine and i?l? hands are now on the ground making ?"?,(100 brick per day. Three of the cottages have been completed and two others are in course ot erection. Mr. Townsend hopes to complete the work by the middle of July next. '1 he power to be used ia electricity, furnish ed by the Anderson Water, Light and Power Company from Portman. ? ? . - - Lowndesville Items. Kev. .J. V. P.lark, of Iva, visited this heel ion las! Thursday. Messrs W. T. Cunningham, W. Speer ami Ceo. Speer, of Monterey, were in town last Thursday. Capt. J. K. Hrownlee, of Centreville, was in town on business friday. Mrs. li. Bolin Allen was present ??t the Baptist institute held at Starr last week. Miss Kate Tennent left Saturday to visit friends and relatives in Green wood. From there she will take in the Imposition at Charleston. Miss Vent Allen is visiting relatives in Anderson. Dr. and Mrs. J. D. Wilson went to Abbeville last Saturday. Mrs. T. J. Bowman and Miss Flor ence Milford spent a few days at Iva. Miss Annie Liddell, who has been to Charleston and visiting friends else where, has returned home not at all hurt by the trip, for she has returned with the same amount of life and spirit she left with. J. T. Latimer went to Abbevilleon business last Saturday. Mr. and .Mrs. A. V. Barnes who have for the past week or so been visiting relatives at Augusta, have returned home. Miss Lillie Iluckabee spent a few days with .Miss Sallie Mann at Autre ville last week. Capt. G. C. Sullivan, of Anderson, was in town the fast part of last week. .Mis. Andrew Speer returned toiler home in Anderson after a few weeks stay with relatives at Monterey illidge Iluckabee attended the sing ing convention at Midway. Maj. and Mrs. F. W. li. Our young merchant, Charlie Bowen, ivas in Anderson the past Sunday. ?Ve conjecture, as the case seems evi lent, that there was some attraction. A match game of ball was played K'tween this place and Iva last Satttr lay. It ended in a victory to the Lowndesville team by a majority of en scores.
