Conference Appointments.
Last Monday night tho one hundred
and sixteenth annual session of tiie
.South Carolina M. E. Church confer
ence came to mi end in Columbia,
liishop Gallowny presided and dis
patched business rapidly. Tho session
was a most interesting and harmonious
one. and every department of the
Church woilc showed up wolf.

Death of Mai. Anderson.
The Williamston Nowsof last Friday
gave the following notice of the death
of Ma.}. George W. Anderson, which
will Liing sorrow to the hearts of many

months and his death expected a I any

part, of the time as courier for Gen.
Bean regard.

burned out. The burnings would

He was of a sympathetic nature, as
hundreds of poor people whom he be- j
friended can testify.
Ho will be sadly missed by his
Church, his community, and most of
all l>3r his loving family. He leaves to
mourn for him seven children, all
grown, anil an aged ami nfilleted wife.
To these the sympathies of many
friends go out.
The funeral exercises took place in
the Methodist Church late Thursday
afternoon, conducted by the pastor,
Rev. A. J. Cant hen, Jr., who came
from the annual conference in Colum
bia to perform the last sail riles over
the remains of one who for years had
been a pillar in his church and one. to
whom the. pastors looked for support
and counsel.
A Popular and Sui:;2s.sful Agent.
A recent issue of The'Prospect, pub
lished in Atlanta and Richmond, con
tains sketches, with their pictures, of
three of the most successful Suite
agents of the Mutual 'Benefit Life In
surance Company. One of these agents
is our genial and energetic townsman,
M. M. Mattisou, of whom the editor
speaks as follows:
"M. M. Mattisoii, the present State
agent for South Carolina, began with
the company as a solicitor under St.Vu
Agent .lotin C. Drewry of Raleigh, in
ItSW. From the first ho developed in
to a successful writer, and having such
a good company behind him ho found
bis position both pleasant and profit
able. Upon the retirement of Mr.
Drewry as State agent of South Caro
lina* to* assume the Statu agency of Vir
ginia. Mr. Maltis, :.'s promotion to that
position was natural and proper, as
his record shows him to be of all men
the right man in tho right place. He
has bis headquarters ar Anderson, and
dur ng his term of a little more than
two \ears as State agent has proven
Iiis ability not only to write life insur
ance, but to .show his agonis how to do
it. When he began with the company
in 1803 it had hi force in South Caro
lina not over $400.000 of insurance.
At the beginning of the present year
there was $fl,719,'lSl) of insurance in
force, while the new business for
will raise tho grand total to over 84,
000,000. This splendid record has been
made in a territory embracing not more
than two-thirds of tlio State, quite a
number of tho const counties being
prohibited territory. Mr. Mattisoii
can point with pride to a large per
centage of tho leading business men of
the Palmetto State who are satisfied
and persistent policy-holders in his
company, and no Stato agent has a
brighter outlook for the future. II?. is
a young mnn, as his portrait in this
paper shows, and in his personal ad
dress is r.ordial and democratic to a
marked degree, making him popular
with all who know him.

school is increasing every week. Prof.
Tinda!, the principal, is the right man
in the right place.
Congressman Latimcr lias gone to
Washington to enter upon his duties.
A. W. Cheshire will open a furniture
store here in the near future.

our farmers were preparing their land

Our young friend, Major Shirley, one
of Clemson's promising cadets, came
home to spend Thanksgiving, lie
speaks in high terms of Clemson.
Misses Moiti? and Bessie Shirley,
students of t he Lebanon High School,
have been at home on a short, vacation.
Their many friends and relatives were
made glad by their short stay with us
and anxiously await Xmns, wheu they

Rev. G. M. Rogers, accompanied by
his lovely daughter. Miss Anna, paid
his last visit to Long Branch Church
last Sunday as pastor (for a time at
least), lie preached an eloquent ser
mon front 1st. Peter, 0-7 verses: "Cast
ing all'your care upon Him, for Ho
caret h for you." Mr. Rogers has served
us as pastor for four years, and it is,
with snd hear I s wo give him up. And
our prayer is that God's richest bless
ings lest upon him in his work.

bride is one of our most beautiful and
accomplished young ladies, while the
