Among all the noble and magnifi cent benefactions credited to Ameri can men of wealth in recent years, we know of none more wisely and worthily bestowed thau that of thc late Lewis ^Klkin, of Philadelphia, who left the bulk of his fortune of $2,000,000 in trust to create a fund for tho benofit of disabled women teachers who have taught in the pub lic schools of that city for 25 years, and have no means of support. The fund will provide tho beneficiaries with un annuity of about $400 each. Tho bequest is noteworthy because almost without precedent. It is an example, however, which other mon of large fortuno might well follow. Statistics indicato that tho United States consumes more sugar than any other nation, or approximately one quarter of the whole of the world's product. The conditions of soil, cli .inate and other advantages aro quite as good in the United States, and es pecially in Colorado, Nebraska and Illinois, for the development of tho beet as in any of thc countries of Europe or Asia. The world's produc tion and consumption of sugar is now about 8,250,000 tons per annum, two thirds of which is produced from beet and only one-third from cane, whilo thc normal consumption is estimated as increasing at tho rate of 250,000 tons yearly.
