To Rricl?n Carpet*.
'When a carpet begins to lose Its col
ors, if warm water and ammonia are
at once applied they will restore thsm.
Apply as follows: In,to ? pailful of
warm water put about three or four
tablespoonfuls of ammonia, and with
a soft flannel cloth dipped In this am
monia water go over the entire car
pet, rubbing vigorously. As each por
tion of thc carpet within your r&ach
is washed, rub lt dry with another
cloth. When the entire carpet is gono
over, open windows and doors and let
the carpet dry and air thoroughly.
This treatment will be found to have
effectually renovated thc carpet, except
it contains shades of green which will
not bear ammonia (It ls well to try
a small portion of the carpet first), in
which case dry salt well rubbed ia
and then vigorously swept out will
freshen and help its appearance.

Uaw to Bay Beef.
Among meats beef leads off as the
most expensive; but lt Is also the
most nourishing for people in good
health. Porterhouse and sirloin steaks
and the rib roasts are the choioe for
general family use. Fillets for roast
ing and steaks ent in a special way
are much higher in pries, and are not
aeen on thc average table. Hotels and
restaurants have them always on hand,
and they really are not ho expensive In
auch cases, where all the buying is
done on a very large scale, thu* re
ducing the price of every pound. If
the hours-keeper of small or average
means wlU adopt this perfect plan of
purchasing her meats in fairly large
quantities she win reduce her butcher's
bill perceptibly, and at tho same time
give her family better cuts sad more.
-. If thia is bought from what is known
to the butcher as "the best part of the
.small of the back" the housekeeper
.will have the best cuts for her table
.at a very moderate cost-Mary Gra

The Mental Processes of the Pat.
An interesting scries of experiments
has just kneen carried ont at Clark Uni
versity, having for its object thc men
tal processes ?l the rat. Several mazes
made of wire netting, were constructed
after thc pattern ol thc Hampton Courl
Maze. 7iu*y contained several blind
a'levs and false passages, and todd wai
placed in thc central enclosure. Into
these maxes mis were introduced, ano
their actions closely studied by a con
cealed observer. fhe observations led
to -certain cpncUtstons. Tints, the fe
male ra; was found strikingly inferior
to thc male in the ability to reach th?
ford in thc central enclosure. Thu
initial movements in I hy maze were in?
definite, and scceess in reaching the
food for the first time, apparently, for
tuitous. They rapidly learned by prac?
tire, ajvJ cotMd :;O>->:? find ?heir way ta
thc center with facility, showing only
alight indecision at thc entrance to the
blind alleys. They seemingly lacked
the faculty of imitation altogether, and
probably did net follow each other by
scent. One other remarkable fact in com
nection with inc experiments was tha
outbreak of the instincts of play and
curiosity after thc edge of the appetite
had been dulled-.Vrtl' york Post.

Lions prowled about the party, one oP

The party at once began barking and
crying "Hu! hu! hu!" In an undertone,
as if the pack were still at a distance,
while the man at the camp made the
