Thc bankrupts? law should bc re pealed. It's a slick way for a dead beat to dodge paying his honest debt-. A law that allows an able bodied man. with a small indebtedness over hit?, to take advantage of his creditors i an inducement to dishonesty. Two hundred members of one of the regiments ret omi i." from the Philip pines remained there (<? engage in business. There ?ill be many other yuline Americans going there to make their fortunes as soon as law and order and stable govern ment are established. The exports ?d' coro from this coun try alimbed up last year to 190,380,480 bushels, of tho value ol $8-1,281 733. If to this i* added the value of exports produced from corn, thc total would be immense. The crop of corn is thc greatest crop grown on earth, and no other country can grow it save this. President McKinley's trip through a portiou of the South on his way to tue Pacific coast l;Hl week will be re membered no doubt as one of the most enjoyable parts of his long trip. No where else in thc 1'nited States will he be received with more generous and sincere hospitality than hu has met in the Soath. - mt . rn" ? That there is more smallpox in the United States than there has been for years thews that it is lcf:> important to determine whence it comes than to take vigorous measures for its extirpa tion. The means of prevention isolation and restriction-should be promptly and thoroughly resorted tc? everywhere until it is finally wiped out. Thc English papers are trying to divert public attention from the Hoer war in South Africa by publishing u yarn .hat Kaiser Wilhelm ?if Germany is getting ready to smash the Monroe doctrine in South America. The Kaiser will give the matter some little attention before making the attack. The new battleships of this country now being launched and in course of construction are great promoters of peace. - mm . rn* . Nearly two thousand families which have been deserted by tho husband.? and fathers are being aided at present by the Chicago Bureau of Charities. Is there any wonder that au agitation in favor of th* introduction of the whipping post for the punishment of those who abandon thoir families to be a charge on the charitable should have been started in that city? The whipping post in ovory State would be the proper puniahrnent for such indi viduals. J. Pierpont Morgan has easily be come the King of American financiers There is no cntcrprisoof any magni tude in whi'.h he is not intorosted. It is claimed that ho is the leading spirit in tho railway consolidations now taking place, besides managing thc great steel combine, now on tin tapis. There has never a man arisen in this country and probably no other, of as wide influence as this new hom cial prince. The question whether it is beneficial to a country to have a man with so much power as this is worthy of contemplation. mM . - Gov. McSwecncy has made a most excellent selection in the appointment of Mr. Earle Sloan, a son of Col. J, B. E. Sloan, of Charleston, State Ge ologist. The Legislature at its lasi session passed thc bili creating the office, and thc Governor has beeu look ing around for a competent South Carolinian. Mr. Sloan was in tbr national service for several years, has had a targe experience in minerals and stone, and is in every way qualified tu amply GU thc position. His sulary will be $1.500, and helms thc appoint ment of au assistant with a salary of $700. Thu payment of pensions to the Confederate soldiers and widows in this State has been held until the Supreme Court oan pass on the puz zling question. The legislature, at its last session, raised the appropria tion from $100,000 to $150,000 bat tho Comptroller General and the Treas urer both found flaws io tho Aot, aud were unwilling to pay out tho oxtra $50,000.
