Gov. McSwecncy has made a most
excellent selection in the appointment
of Mr. Earle Sloan, a son of Col. J, B.
E. Sloan, of Charleston, State Ge
ologist. The Legislature at its lasi

office, and thc Governor has beeu look
ing around for a competent South
Carolinian. Mr. Sloan was in tbr
national service for several years, has
had a targe experience in minerals and
stone, and is in every way qualified tu
amply GU thc position. His sulary
will be $1.500, and helms thc appoint
ment of au assistant with a salary of
$700.
Thu payment of pensions to the
Confederate soldiers and widows in
this State has been held until the
Supreme Court oan pass on the puz
zling question. The legislature, at
its last session, raised the appropria
tion from $100,000 to $150,000 bat tho
