Opening Hie ?asc Bail Season.
Tlic bast-ball sensou will open this j
yeai between Clemson ami Auburn, !
thc strong team from the Alabama
Polytechnic Institute, who nie the.
champions ot' Alabama. Tho teams
will play two fi?mes, ns follows: Clem
son College, Friday, March 2fl; Ander
son, Saturday, March ?30. The Auburn
team of last year wits considered p. very
strong ono and from report most of
their old men are back nt college. Mr.
Ileismnu, the veteran coach, has the
Clemson team in charge and is develop
ing a fast snappy style ol play. The
rivalry between Auburn and Clemson
is very intense on the foot ball Held,
and the former will probably come
prepared to do Clemson up in great
shape on the base ball field. Tho ad
?nisHioti to both thu Clemson and An
derson games will bo 23 cents for all.
Corner Creek News.
During Hie past few days our people
have experienced some real blustery
weather for this time of the year.
Though Spring will soon be hero with
all of its loveliness, atid we eau rest as
sured that "windy March" will not al
ways last. Spring is gem-rally greeted
by everybody with great joy. Thc
birds are beginning to warble their
sweet melody, ami the whippoorwill
can soon lu- heard to welcome thc beau
tiful Spring weather which is drawing
upon us. Farmers arc progressing
nicely with their work. Much has been
done towards preparing land for this
year's crop. All land has lu cn prepar
ed in a good condition, and wc feel
confident that our farmers will plant a
largo crop tins year in corn and other
products, so as ti> make a living at
linnie as near as possible.
M ?ss Leila Carwilo, one nf our fair
maidens, win* is now teaching the As
bury school, eight miles nott h west
of Anderson, spent Saturday and
Sunday herc with her parents.
M HS Olivia Cassa way visited Midges
Maude and Allie llraiiyon, id' /.arline,
Sunday.
TheHubool at this place still contin
ues to be in a nourishing condition.
A heavy rain fell in these parts Sun
day a week ago, which baked the laud
considerable, but it was much needed.
It revived th? small grain crop, ami a
fair yield looks brobablc.
Mr. L. Shirley, one of our progres

which alfords abundant feed for a
largo number of cattle.
Occasionally we bear complaints
from correspondents concerning tho
"bad roads'1 of their respectivo sec
tions. No doubt but wha' they have
ample room to complain. Wo don't
seo any reason why Anderson County
don't have good roads all over the en
tire County. Anderson County ranks
foremost in a great ninny things, and
why don't shu havo good roads? An
eminent writer says: "You can meas
ure tho civilization of a peoplo by their
roads." We feel justly proud of the
excellent roads of our immediate Com
munity, but our good roads are mainly
due to the excellent supervision of our
efficient township supervisor, Mr. J.
M. Hanks. He is always looking after
the roads and bridges, and never fails
to perform his duty iii a commendable
way. Air. Hanks makes a success of
anything be undertakes, which is in
deed shown by the good roads lie has
given us. ile is always certain to have
a competent mau to run the road ma
chine. J. A. Oarby bas hail control of
tho "scrape" f*n tho past two years,
and will run it again this year, ".lap"
can't be excelled with t he machine, and
be certainly knows how to manage it,
and put the roads in good condition.
Mr. Hanks well merits the success that
bo covets.
Mrs. J. T. McConnell and two chil

Tho price of cotton has dropped
lowe~ than a good many w ho have livid
their cotton for better prices expected
it would. Wo know of several in this
locality who could have sold their cu
tir? crop for ten cents, but fully ex
pected tho price to ndvaucu higher.
Alas, to their sorrow, they will take
less than ten cents.
The County of Anderson and the
proud State of South Carolina should
feel proud of such men as composed the
G rand dury. They did creditable and
commendable work. The "free slav
ery" was bail enough, but nothing to
compare to the malicious and startling
account of it given in the North Amer
ican. Wechanced toread this "Yankee"
paper, and was amazed at the sight of
such pictures of thc so-called "free
slavery" negroes. Some who read that
paper will no doubt bo led to believe'
that ve have the slavery system of
iorty years ago re-established. Hut
Anderson County bas some teal less
citizens who will ever strive to sec that
our laws are not trampled under by
men who don't regard tho law as any
thing very important.
Peach trees are beginning to bloom,
but we fear that ii it ia av s cold like it
is now for many more days they will bo
all killed.

Remember the Sabbath day to keep
it holy? Have we all given this sub
ject one thought? How easy it is, ami
how often wo break Sabbath. Do wo
remember that God tirst set tho exam
ple, made the law and then gave the
command? How encouraging the
thought that our Heavenly Father
would set apart every seventh day for
uur rest day; not only that, but to
make it holy, and then be so kind as to
caution and command us to keep it
holy. Hut after all His love poor, care
less and sinful men will break the Sab
bath day. And I think if wo would
keep the Sabbath as we should, we
would consecrate ourselves to God on
that day, and endeavor as each Sunday
passes into eternity to become moro
like the Ono in whoso image wo were
made. Hut 1 see people breaking that
command almost every Sunday in some
way. We aro not only told to rest
