ONE YEAH, - - - - %l 00 SIX MONTHS. - - - TO WEDNESDAY, (KT. 3, 1??0. \\ a rs ami rumors, of wars remind us that (lu- Bible lias said that this would ho thc condition preceding thc end of l In- world. - - tm? . mi - In every section ol the country lead ers of thought and action, honest, thinking men of every class and candi tion nie hastening to ally themselves with Bryan and Stevenson. I'.wiy day thc success of Democracy arrows more promising, Thc Knights of ['ylhias hodge at Sumter, S. C.. has established a schol arship at Clemson College. This is indeed a knightly act well in keeping with th? brotherly principles and ebal liable teaching*, o? a noble order. These worthy sons of Sumter deserve ?ind will receive the thanks ol' all w ho appreciate nobility of purpose. Thc National Democratic Executive Committee wants only four thousand dollars from South Carolina Democrats to help elect Brynn and Stevenson. The money is wanted for legitimate purposes, such as the expenses of campaign and the distribution of cam paign literature in the doubtful Slates. South Carolina can well alford to stand some of the expense of the campaign, and the sum asked for should be easily and promptly raised. The war in South Africa is about ended, but the warnews from the Phil ippines continues to come in ladened with tho death lists of American sol diers. The twenty inillionsthe "stren uous" glory Si ekers induced th? gov ernment to give for those "peaceable" islands was but a drop in thc bucket to the mighty cost that was to follow in their wake. What will be the. linal cost is a question that will touch the heart and pocket of the American peo ple. Solicitor Ansel is now on his last round as prosecuting attorney for tho State in the Eighth Judicial Circuit, and the tribute paid bim last week by our Grand Jury was a just and deserved one. We do not believe South Caro lina ever had amore zealous, faithful or conscientious Solicitor than he, and in voluntarily retiring from the office he carries with bim the confidence and good will of every Ir.w-abiding citizen. May Heaven's riciiest blessings be his portion throughout life. - mm * ? There is a more general agitation of thc race question now than ever before. The subject is constantly coining up in conventions, in churches and in legis lative bodies. The question is a live one to the South. Tho negro is wel come to stay in tho South so long ns bc knows h ia place and has tho sense to keep it. The present agitation can do no hann and it may result in some good. Thc country might ns well un derstand the attitude of the South toward tho negro now as well a? any other time. White supremacy will be maintained in the South UH long ns Southerners claim the section as their home. .-.- mm O -mm A pleasing and well deserved recog nition of the intrinsic and artistic merits of American textiles ia found in the award of grand prizes aud gold med ?1? at tho Paris exposition to tho products of our cotton and woolen nolls in competition with those of other countries. Aa a vholo our textile ex hibits stood the competitive test better : than those of any other country. With one exception only, in which a silver medal was awarded, every ono of these exhibits received either a grand prize, or a gold medal. Yiewed from any point it is thc most brilliant record over accorded to a line of textile fabrics placed on exhibition in competition with tho manufactures of tho world. - rn? m 1 A conciso and complete picture of the manifold oppressions of the trust sys tem is given by Bryan in his letter of acceptance: "Tho consumer sutlers ex tortion, tho producer of raw material has but ono purchaser and must sell at the arbitrary price lixed; the laborer has but one eniploj'er and is powerless co protest against injustice either in wages or iu conditions of labor; the small stockholder is nt the mercy of the speculator, while tho traveling salesman contributes his salary to the overgrown profits of the trust." Every mau, woman and child in tho United States is banefully affected by tho trusts. Every man, woman or child cm bo placed in one of the classes Bryan has enumerated. The class of consumer embraces them all. Some occupy a place in two of the classes. The demand ls constantly growing for shuttles. Cottor factories are in creasing at a rapid rn ie, and it appears that thc small item of shuttles is one of remarkable difficulty to procure. Why not build one of our own? South Carolina can manufacture the shuttles just as easy and just ns successfully as Massachusetts. We labored long in this resourceful Southern country un der the delusion that cotton factories could not be mudo a success. That falacy no longer exists, and the thou sand and ono other things that have for generations enriched the manufac turing East can be aud will be manu factured in the South. We need a diversification of manufacturing enter prises, and a shuttle factory could bo made y success. Little machinery and snir>'P capital will be required. Tho wood of this section, we are told, abounds in the best kind of matcrinl and the markets ave really hungering for a more abundant supply. Why not have ono in Anderson? Septum Hems. W, WOO, and yet it seems as il it lind been only a few days since every thing was dud in glorious array <m ac count of that happiest day ot' all the your, Christmas, and hen* it is almost upon us. A great many changes have taken place since the advent of l?00, and ti great ninny inure will take place before its termination. Since the beginning of the year our anny, or rather Mc Kinley's army, has .'crushed" there be!!:;;':: in the I'lsili'Mune Islands, the British have murdered the Hoers, and now the international war eagle has swooped doun upon the yellow mun of thc Orient, and soon he will be known no more upon earth. I l?nifierai* are going t<> \vin one of the grandest victories ovei the 1?Y publicans this year that has evei been recorded. Truly, we must \\::i ibo \ ietory or all is'lost. We have been having som?' of the hottest weather during the past week I iliat luis evel bren experienced in Sep tember. There is going to be a great deal of moving about among our people this fall. Some are going to Ccorgla, and it is rej io rt ed that some have the Texas fever. A good portion ot' our people attend ed tho I'nion meeting ai Corinth last Saturday and Sunday. They reporta pleasant occasion. Cupid has been shooting bis arrows at om* of our popular widowers, ami ?rom all appearances has wounded him pretty badly. (?into a number of prospective buy ers were in this community last week looking over the estate of the late Win. Watkins. There has been un epidemic of sore eyes in this community, but was con lined mostly to the children. The farmers will sow another large small grain crop this year. They have about come to the conclusion that it nays them to raise their breadstuff at home and not depend on some one else. There ?ire some people who cannot live, without Hading fault. No matter what subject or person comes up in course ot conversation, they start some frivolous objection or make some sen sorous remark, instead of trying to be in charity with their neighbors they take malicious pleasure in speakiug evil of them. They obstinately shut their eyes to good qualities, while they employ microscopes to discover and magnify evil ones, and afterwards they torture language to exaggerate what they have seen, so as to depreciate as much as possible. They do not, how ever, always speak out boldly, but they deal in inuendoes, bints and ominous shakes of the head. Instead of frank ly assailing in front, they assassinate behind tho back. They spend their lives in defiling human naturi*, like the foul Yahoos whom the satarist has depicted. To believe them there are none virtuous but themselves, all the rest of mankind being knaves, brutes or devils. The proverbial fault-finder little thinks that, in censuring so niali cioitslynnd indiscriminately ho ?sonly painting Iiis own portrait, lt isa se cret consciousness of his demerit, u gnawing rage at thc superiority of oth ers, which ?he real cause ofilia want of charity, the principle inducement to his abuse. His own heart is the nar row from which he describes mankind. The best men have been those, inva riably, who spoko tho most kindly of their race. The great typo of all man hood, whose perfect; humanity is the admiration even of Pagans und* Athe ists, are those who always apeak in be nignant terms, even of "publicans nnd sinners." It is to his precept that wo owe the great doctrino of human brotherhood. lu tho ideal of the fallen Lucifer, we have, on tho contrary, tho incarnation of mu'ice, hate, slander, ill will, and evil sp?-iking. As tho one is said to have come Lo bring "peace and good will to men,1' so tho other first dollied fair creation with strifo and sowed war among the boats of Heaven. We never listen to tho beno ilcent language of ono who is in chari ty with his race, without feeling that ho is advancing more and more to thc "perfect man. So long, till we como agaiu. W. C.
