Suicide on 6uch a dcale as has never
been peen in the history of the world
trill probably .follow the entranco of
the allied forces into Pekin. It is the
customary Oriental way of esoaping
the dishonor of defeat and in this case
the leaders of the rebel Chinese will
knuw that terrible punishment awaits
them if they survive the loss of their
cause. In 1860, when the Taku ports
were taken, many mandarins took their
own lives, as well as the- wives of
numerous officials, and when the Brit
ish captured Amoy, Ning-poand Chin-,
kiang scores of ladies, imagining that
they would be subjeoted to brutality
and outrage by the foreign soldiers,
slew themselves in the presence of
their husbands, who followed their
example. The victors found dozens
, f bodies in wells and-ponds belonging
to private residences.
suicide a custom in china.
The Chinese are more addicted to
suicide than any other people, and un
der certain circumstances the act of
gelf-destruction is consid?re i the most
virtuous and heroic imaginable. This
is particularly true of civil or military
officers who refuse to survive defeat
in battle or an insult offered to the
sovereign of the country. Opium,
hanging and drowning are the favorite
methods adopted, and the unfortu
nates, believing that beyond the grave
the shades of the departed are olsd
in garments like those the defunct
wore at the time of death, usually put
on their best clothes in preparation
for the deed. On a previous occasion
the Emperor's summer palace was de
stroyed for a leason to the Govern
ment, but this time, if it is found
that the present rulers are responsible
for the recent mischief, the whole of
the Forbidden City will doubtless be
razed to the ground and the injury to
the sensitive feelings of the official
class will be frightful indeed.
does christianity ask this?
On the other hand, if the powers
that he are able to clear their skirts
of accountability, they will be requir
ed to inflict punishments on a whole
sale scale, and this will be accomplish
ed in ways peculiarly Chinese. The
leaders of the rebels, or the principal
scapegoats, will be sliced to death?a
mode of execution whioh, while ex
tremely barbarous and cruel, is the
most scientific known. According to
the rules governing the process the
victim is cut into a specified number
of pieces, which may be 120, or 72, or
36, or 24. If there are extenuating
circumstances in his case the number
of pieces may be reduced even to 8,
which brings death relatively soon.
But in every instance the succession
of cuts is regulated as exactly as those
ased by a butcher in' dividing up an
ox.
The feeling of horror with which
one regards such doings is mitigated
lo some extent by recollections of the
abominable crimes of whioh theoffend
?rs have proved themselves capable..
I? June, 1870, a powerful magistrate

glorious, but not wholly unselfish, de

cisely the same faith the Boxers them
selves are fighting and Becking to de
stroy the foreign devils, being led b;
their priests to, believe that, if killed
they will go straight to glory. Th
execution of 10,000 or 50,000 of thei
will have no appreciable effect as
lesson to the mass of the population
Even under ordinary circumstance
Chinamen are wonderfully indiff?r?e
to death, and it is not very difficult t

MANY INNOCENTS WILL SUFFER.
A great many wholly innocent j?ei
sons are sure to suffer punishmen
with the guilty at the conclusion o
the present episode, because in Chin
it is customary to extend the pen alt
to the relatives of the offender. Chef
ter Holeombe speaks of a Ohinama
who was convicted some years ago a
having broken open the tomb* of
prince and robbed the coffin of vain
able ornaments which it. contained
Though nobody else had anything t
do with the crime, his entire family
numbering thirteen persons and eon

old, were pat to death. The erimini

officer enters the prison, carrying a
board, on whioh is pasted a list of
the names of the offenders who are to
atone for their erimes. ' This list he
reads aloud, and eaoh prisoner whoso
name is called answers it, being made
thereupon to sit in a basket, in
which he is carried into the presence
of the Judge. After answering a few
perfunctory questions as to his guilt,
etc., he is carried to tho execution

him a few cakes, a little soup, or, if
they can afford it, betel-nut, which

disregard of human life.
The Taotal of Tien Tsin, during a
recent war, was appealed to by for
eigners in behalf of the Chinese
wounded and Hick, who were suffering
horribly and receiving no nursing or
other attention whatever. He seem
ed surprised and replied: ''What do
I want with wounded men? The
sooner they die the better. China
has plenty of men."
This remark affords a key to many
matters in China that puzzle the for
eigner. Men are a drug in that coun
try and human life is not considered
valuable in the way we look upon it.
The loss of a million soldiers in the
field would not be regarded as a se
rious misfortune by the Imperial Gov
ernment, inasmuch as they could be
easily replaced. China is the great
swarming place of mankind, and the
population is so close to the possible
limit set by the available food supply |
that the destruction of a few myriads
of lives is actually a substantial bene
fit rather than a calamity from
the point of view of those who sur
vive.

Married Life.
? girl thinking seriously of her fu
ture husband does not lay great stress
on good temper. A soldierly form, a
pair of fine eyes, a noble mouth?any
of these might easily outweigh good
temper. Yet one writer assures us
that "?fter the first year married peo
ple rarely think of eaoh other's fea
tures: whether they are classically
beautiful ot otherwise: but they never
fail to ho cognizant of each other's
temper."
As to a husband's fortune, it is not
so important as the qualities whioh
lead to fortune?ambition, determina
tion, industry, thrift and position
suoh as a man may attain for himself.
In education a man should be at least
his wife's equal. Undoubtedly there
is some sublime affinity between op
p08ites. Yet there must be likeness
as well as unlikeness. The latter will
lend piquancy whioh is pleasant; but
the former will give peaoe, whioh is
essential. At first love itself will be
all-sufficient; but a little later tho in
dividual Characteristics re-assert them
Huives, and then, in the absence of
comprehension and sympathy in one's
pet taste's and theories, a barrier
springs up, slight, unoonfessed, per
haps; but still impassable, and in one
sense at least, man and wife are not
"one." but distinctly "two."
