have passed. Thc year that is now
nearly com ploted is tho ninety-ninth
year and it will take ono more tu
make a hundred, and then thc twen
tieth ecuiury will begin and will bo
called HMM. Now I have had tho
conclusion as tho lawyers say. and so
let the discussion stop and tho case
bc submitted to tho jury. Christmas
is herc no matter whore t li tr twentieth
century begins and wo arc going to
enjoy it.
One day in soven is not enough -
wc want a whole week at the ? nd ol'
tho year, and accord i ny li? scriptur?! it
i- a good tinny to have a winde year
in seven--ayear of jubilee when oven
tho land wo till shall have rest and ,
time to recover itself and renew its
wasted energies. Blessings on tho he
ly fathers who established tho Christ
mas holidays, and on the yood men ,
who for eighteen centuries have pro- I
.served it for us and our children. It j
is a blessed heritage and belongs to
all alike-the rich and tho poor, tho
bond and thc free, the king and his
subject. Hut those good old w ay s arc
changing and becoming circumscribed.
3Iankind is growing too stingy of time.
Christmas used to last from tho 125tli
of December to tho (Uh of .January,
and for twelve days there was neither
work nor toil, nor oflicial business, nor |
suits for debt, dunning, cor prepara- |
tions for war, but all was peace ami
pleasure and kindly foldings. The
peasant was on a level with tho prince !
and thc boys and girls wore chaplets
of ivy and laurel and holly and ever
green, and it was no sin for them to
take a sly kiss ?yhile tho rosemary
wreaths encircled their brows, for a
kiss under the rose was an emblem of
inuocence and had the sanctiou of
heaven, and lovo whispered while
wearing the mistletoe crown was too
pure to bo lost or betrayed.
I love tho old superstition that
clusters arouud this season of my joy
and gladness. Long did I lamont the
day when my children eyes wore open
ed and I learned there was no Saint
Nicholas nor Santa Claus, no reindeer
on tho roof, no coming down the oh i in- I
ney to fill tho sta ''inga that hung hy !
thc mantel, f'^vvn now 1 would fain
believe, with Shakespeare, that, for
iluso twelve days witches and hobgob
lins and devilish spirits had to Hy
away from tho haunts of men and hide
themselves in tho dark pits and caves
ol' the earth while tho good spirits
who love us and watch over us, nes
tled their invisible forms among thc
evergreens that hung upon the walls.
IL was pleasant to think that on tho
last day of tho twelve thc cattle knelt
down at midnight and humbly prayed
that souls might bo given thom when
they died, so that they, too, might
live in heaven and worship (?od. I
hope tho p.oor things will have a good
time in thc next world, for they sec a
rough ono in this, and I reckon they
will, considering what a splendid pair
of horses came down after tho prophet
Elijah. Heaven wouldont bc any tho
less heaven to inc to lind my good
dog Bows up there, all renewed in his
youth, aud to receive the glad
welcome that wags in bis diminished
tail.
Now, childrcn, let us imagine we are
around the cheerful Christmas fire and
talk about Christmas and tell what it
means. Of course you know that it is
tho anniversary of tho hirth of Christ,
, and all Christian pooojo celebrate it.

Christians everywhere adopted them,

tury or so ago lhere were m.my curious
superstitions about Christmas, lt
was believed that an ox or an ass that
were near hy when thc Savior was
born bent their knees in supplication,
and ?o they said thc animals all wont
to prayer every Christmas night. Of
course, they might have known better
if they had watched all night to sec,
but when folks love a superstition
they humor it. If a child believes in
ghosts they are sure to see them,
whether they are there or not. Those
old-time people believed that when
the rooster crowed for midnight on
Christmas night all thc wiz/.ards and
witches and hobgoblins and evil spirits
lied away from tb?! habitations ol' men
and.hid in caves and hollow trees aud
deserted houses, and stayed there for
twelve days.
And now let us all get ready to wish
a happy New Year to everybody, and
my opinion is that we can all make it
happy if wc try. Let's try. Let's
turn over a new leaf. Let's have a
Christinas all the year long. Let's
keep the family hearth always bright
and pleasant. Fussing and fretting
don't pay. Solomon says its like wa
ter dropping on a rock-it will wear
away a stone. Tho home nf an un
happy, discordant family is no home
at all. It- aint even a decent purga
tory. The children won't stay thor?!

emigrate and 1 don't blame 'cm.

of the girl readers of the Companion
in Key West, I'la., has a brother in
t.lio Klondyke region, who lias risked
all t" dig fortune from mother earth,
and writes to tell bim thc news from
hume. She drops the letter in the
po-ioline at Key West, audit starts
on it s long journey.
lt. does not, of necessity, travel in a
straight linc to its destination, but
must follow thc twistingsand turnings
ol' thc railroads, which have complete
charge of it until thc northwest comer
of thc State cf Washington is reached.
When it arrives at Seattle it has pass
ed through fourteen States, and yet,
so far as time is concerned, but one
fourth of thc journey bas been accom
plished.
It now takes a sea voyage from Se
attle lo Juneau, Alaska, and from the
latter plaeo is carried, as I have al
ready described, to Circle City. It
may be taken from there by friendly
hands farther into the. Klondyke coun
try, and finally delivered to thc anx
ious brother, who has been eagerly
awaiting the arrival of the next party
from the nearest town in which a
postoflicc is conducted, in the hope
that some one would bring him a let
ter.
This letter has now traveled in the
neighborhood of 7,01)0 miles-by rail
road, steamboat, stage, horseback,
and, perhaps, dogsled-aud has been
on thc road for nearly forty days with
out a moment's rest.
No profit, in money, accrues to the
government for delivering that letter;
indeed, each letter sent into the Klon
dyke costs thc government for trans
portation many times the amount of
postage charged; but. in such aaj^cs,
should wc reckon the profit only in
dollars and cents?
Should we not consider also the hap
piness and satisfaction afforded that
brother as he sits by his fire, perhaps
homesick aud lonely, but now with a
loving smile illuminating Iiis face, as
he reads and reads again every word
his thoughtful sister bas written about
home, mother and father, and perhaps
some one else whom he holds dear?
When, finally, he places his treasure
under his pillow and seeks rest he is
happier than for many a day; and
Uncle Sam, who has contributed so
largely to that happiness, does not re
gret the small pecuuiary loss he has
sustained.
