. ?i disliked and wii . |?:irts ol' our
daily lives, whose ! . and form.'! and
names were as familiar tb us as mir
own. Some tri k of memory, some ac
cidents recalls I hem to us. I'crhaps
in that mysterious, wonderful life we
know while wc are sleeping ami our
minds an: free and at fantastic play in
the ni i ch ty realm of the unreal, these
tuen of thc long ugo -fifteen ur twenty
or thirty year- ure suddenly with
us again and we are involved with
them in some curious experience. Wc
struggle with our memories to hiing
them hark clearly, and vaguely wonder
that we have forgotten, ll we occupy
a leisure hour ingoing hack through
our lives we are surprised hy tho
-cores ul' men who rome to us from
oblivion whom wc knew well. In
t'iis country ol' ours it is especially
notable. line in (?rccnvillc a man
who went away thirty, or even twenty ,
years ago would lind now strange faecs
everywhere, strange names on the
siens over the doors. Ile would learn
that he had been forgotten and would,
as memories returned to him one by
one, wonder at t hc number nf people
he had forgotten: and when he found
somebody who remembered him and
undertook to go overbold timi's" man
after man. family after family would
be recalled who had been forgotten,
who had cone away and of whom all
trace had been lost. In thc cemeter
ies herc there arc the graves ol' many
dead whose people are hundreds or
thousands of miles away, who arc
forgotten in thc community in which
they lived, who have forgotten it,
except vaguely, or when their hearts
come back to thc neglected graves.
I'or wo who are here as wc forget
ale forgotten. Wc are to those we
once knew as they are to us; and wc
shall bc after some little time to thc
world ol' living men as arc thc dead in
thc forsaken graves to us. In many
parts ol' the world there arc persons to
whom we arc recalled hy accident or a
vagary of thc dream life-hy an old
book with a name in it or a faded pic
ture found in some out-of-the-way
place or something of like kind. They,
too, struggle to recall us aud do it
gradually and vaguely, and indiffer
ently speculate as to whether wc are
living or dead, herc or elsewhere, do
ing weil or ill, just as we do ol' them.
None of us may Hatter ourselves that
wc will be very long remembered. Of
each generation of the human race
millions die and are forgotten within
ten or fifteen years. A few are rc
meoihered a little longer; a score or
si century, perhaps; maybe one
will leave a natue which will live fresh
in nu n's minds always: hut the tuan
himself will be forgotten. < Inly what
lu: di.i and was will be remembered.
While -i.m live their names will give
importance i>> what they do; when
they arc dead their names are made
important hy what they have done.
So it i- thc universal lot to be for
gotten and only what wc do eau live,
lt will live, even when wc would earn
estly hope to have it die. What wc
do and say is from our souls and
shares the soul's immortality. The
good or evil influence of those wc have
forgotten remains with us, often bend
ing our lives this way or that, and so
our influence with those who have for
gotton us; and the results are passed
on from life to life, from generation to
generation. A good or a bad impulse
or purpose one of us put twenty years
ago into tho heart of a man we have
forgotten and who has forgotten us
may bc living ?iud bearing good or evil
fruit thousands of miles away and
among thousands of men we hove
never known or thought of us. The
first germ of a plague was born cen
turies ago in one man who spread it
to another and thus infected nations
and left a heritage of misery for un
numbered generations. Thc plague
germ completes its work here. What
we put into a human heart and life
will never end, for its work for good
or ill will continue into thc vast and
endless life that stretches . beyond
death. Tho knowledge that we must
be forgotten is saddening; tho knowl
