Anderson County loses another old
and highly esteemed citizen in t he deal h
ol Mr. Andrew Hunter, which occurred
at his home near Town ville on Tuesday
evening, 12th insl., in thc8-1 (li yeurof
his age. A few days preceding his
(hnth bc accidentally' fell from a chair,
in w hich ho attempted to sit down, ami
hurt one of his legs. This brought on
a nervous shock ami he gradually
weakened away until death came to his
relief. Thc deceased was boin and
reared near Bickens c. H., and about
I hilly years ago nm veil to thc place
where he died, lie married Miss-Mary
Simpson, of this County, who preceded
him to tho grave a few years ago. One
sim and three daughters survive him.
In his young manhood Mr. Hunter
.joined thc Presbyterian ('burch, and
throughout his lifo w as a devoted and
exemplary member. In every relation
of lifo lie discharged his duties nobly,
and has left a name that his descen
dants can ever point with pride to. Un
thc day following his death his remains
were laid to rest in tho Presbyterian
churchyard at Town ville, Kev. W. S.
Haunter conducting the funeral servi
ces in the presence of a large concourse
of sorrowing friends.
Recent published accounts of cider
seizures in the County are calculated to
do much injury to tho partieo charged
with violating the dispensary laws by
ottering for sale cider alleged to contain
alcohol. A case in point is thc repent
ed references to Mr. Albert S. Bowie
and his clerk, Mr. Joseph Ligon, of Iva.
It. is unnecessary to suy to those who
are acquainted with these excellent
gentlemen that there is something rad
ically wrong in tho charge preferred
against them, for they are regarded by
their more immediate neighbors as gen
tlemen of sterling qualities who arc too
conscientious to violate a law knowing
ly, and too careful to be led into it
blindly. In conversation with a prom
inent gentleman of the Iva section, he
stated that the neighbors of Messrs.
Bowie and Ligon felt outraged itt tho
scandalous publicity given to tho case,
and declared that if it were left to a
jury of the ministers and Church-going
people ot' that vicinity, the parties in
stigating the case wouid receive a mer
ited rebuke. Mr. Bowie is a prosperous
farmer and merchant of Iva, and Mr.
Ligon, his clerk, is a son of Kev. H. C.
Ligon, of this County, and himself
studying io become .a Presbyterian
minister.
Mr. Will R. Hubbard passed away nt
his residence in this city at 7::J0 o'clock
last Saturday morning, after a brave
light of several mouths with the dread
malady. Bright's disease. He had,
however, been confined to his room
only a week, and WHB not considered
seriously ill until the evening before
his death. While it has been generally
known for some time, past that he was
gradually failing in health, the news of
his death came as ti shock and a sur
prise to bis friends, thc most intimate
of whom were unacquainted with the
desperate and changed condition which
had so suddenly become manifest. De
ceased was thirty-six years of agc and
was the 3'oungest son of the late R. IL
and Juno Hubbard. By his magnetic
manners and habits of industry he soon
drew around him a largo ?md influen
tial circle of friends, whoso splendid
patronage was bestowed upon him, ev
idencing the degree of confidence in
which he was held by those who knew
him best. Again, when he. after re
pented solicitations, allowed his name
to bc used as a candidate for alderman,
his friends rallied to his support and
gave him one of thc largest votes ever
cast in this city, leading Iris ticket by
a handsome number of votes. During
his term of office ns Mayor pro tem, ho
won many golden opinions for his ju
dicial ability and timi, resolute deter
mination to uphold thc majesty of the
law. His voluntary retirement from
city politics was universally regretted,
ns every one recognized his honesty of
purpose and force of splendid charac
ter, so that there was no office within
the people's gift which he could not
h?ivc l?a?* ?or tuc ?nK?i^c. An *% cou ven
man he was enthusiastic and liberal and
was, np to tho time of hin ?lrst collapse
in health, an active worker in the Sun
day School of St. John Methodist
Church, of which church he was a mem
ber. About twelve years ago he mar
ried Miss Dessie r?cese, who with
two little sons survive him. He was an
ftileeiionate husband, a fondant! indul
gent father, and a true and loyal friend.
The funeral exercises were conducted
at the home of tho deceased by Rev.
W. T. Capers and Rev. W. W. Daniel,
after which the body was token in
charge by the Knights of Pythias and
interred in Silver Brook Cemetery with
their beautiful and impressive cere
mony. His family have our sincerest
sympathy.
