raised in that county. It is not known
whether any premiums will lie ottered

from as far as thirty miles, and they
say it pays them well to make the long
haul, for in addition to getting a much
better price for their cotton, they find
supplies and dry goods cheaper here
than elsewhere, so that the high price
paid for cotton also means a great deal
to our merchants.
Prof. Marshall Moore, of the Ander
son Graded Schools, has presented the
Chicora Literary Society, of the (.'en
trai School, a "beautiful gavel, made
from a limb of a tree, taken from the
battlefield of Lookout Mountain. The
Society highly appreciates the present,
which wili bi* used nt its meetings hy
the presiding officer.
Isaac Green, living near Williamston,
suffered the loss of everything he pos
sessed, practically, by fire a few nights
ago. The family were ott' at a neigh
bor's house attending a prayer meeting
and upon their return found their bonn'
enveloped in Haines. The cause is sup
posed to have been a defective stove

ment, has been successful, having a

Hon. E. M. Eucker was in Elberton
last Saturday, looking as young and
lithe as many a man of forty. Yet he
represented Elbert County in the Leg
islature 5:i years ago, and wears the
distinction of being the only legislator
Georgia ever had of refusing to accept
his per diem. He was sick a part of the
legislative term and refused to receive
pay for the tillie he lost from his duties.

Miss Theresa C. Brown died at he

and had always resided in Anderson
She was educated at the old Johnstoi
Female University, and possed consid
erable literary talent. She was a stu
dent all her life, and was always sur
rounded with tho latest books and pa
pois, which kept her well posted in th
events, sciences and progressive fea
turcs of tiie day. Throughout her lif
she was a dvoted member of the Bap
tint Church. Two brothers, Dr. B. V
Brown, of Williamston, and Mr. Sam
uel Brown, of this city, and a half-sis
ter, Mrs. C. Wardlaw, of Arkansai
survive her. Her remains were intcrre
in the Silver Brook Cemetery Frida

The Pendleton correspondent of the
Xeirs anil Courier, underdale of the Mb
inst., says: "Mr. F. .1. Pel/or had thc
misfortune to lose his magnificent barn
at his summer home, about three miles
from here, last ni^lit by lire. The barn
contained eighteen mules ami horses,
eight lino Jersey milk cows, about two
hundred bushels of grain, an eugiinc,
thresher, lot of wagons and farm im
plements. Roughly estimated, the loss
is about $'(?.1100. This is the second lire
of this kimi Mr. l'elzcr has sustained
in the last eight years, lt is supposed
that the cause of the tire was sponta
neous combustion. The barn anti con
tents were partially insured.*'
A committee, representing the Chap
ter of Daughters of the Confederacy
ami the Camp of Sims t?f Veterans, has
arranged to have an old-fashioned
"Cake-Walk" in the Court House to
morrow (Thursday) evening, for the
benefit ol' the Confederate Monument
fund. A small admission fee will bo
charged. A rich programme is being
arranged for the occasion, and those
who attend may expect an enjoyable
evening. A number of billies and gen
tlemen will participate in the walk,
anti prizes will he awarded to the. best,
walkers, costumes, etc. The colonial,
the tuckey, the negro ami other char
acters will be represented. Do not fail
to go and see the walk, ami thus help a
patriotic cause.
Col. Tims. W. Holloway, the genyil

Fair, in a private letter tit us. says:
"The outlook for a successful Fair is

beg you to impress upon your rentiers
that Anderson Count)' was for several
years the banner County in exhibits
and the attendance of visitors. For
the past, several,years such has not
been thc case. Your County is regard
ed as one of if not the most progressive
Counties in the State, but her interest
in the State Fair seems to have waned,
and why.' 1 hopo your fanners will
wake up, write to mu for a premium
list and entry blanks and again enter
into competition with other Cohn ties
in the State." Thc State Fair will bo
held this year from November tit li to
10th, and we would be more than
pleased to see Anderson County well
represented at it, by both exhib?s and

in the State, anti we should fake ad

Last Wednesday afternoon a most,
fiendish outrage was attempted by Tom
Jenkins, a negro brute, ou a most ex
cellent young lady near the northeast
ern suburbs of tho city. The young
lady lives about a mile from the city
limits. She was on her way from the
Central Graded School, and passed a

notified, and the matter was reported
