The I*. M. I. Commencement.
Thc annual commencement exercises
of tho Patrick Military Institute begun
last Sunday with tho commencement
sermon, which was preached at 11.30 a.
m. in the Baptist Church hy Kev. J.
Walter Daniel, of Abbeville. Tho
l'rcsbyterian and Methodist Churches
were closed, and as a consequence a
very large congregation was present.
Hov. 0. L. Martin, pastor of thc Baptist
Church, and Kev. W. W. Daniel, ot the
Methodist Church, occupied sects on
the rostrum and assisted in the servi
ces. Thc choir was composed of mem
bers from thc several Churches, and
the music was very sweet and appro
priate to the occasion.
Mr. Daniel announced Iiis text from
the latter clause of the 1st verse of the
21st chapter of Revelations : "And
t here was no more sea." In his open
ing remarks the preacher referred to
thc ad ai rs in Kui opr. thc Chinese-.Jap
anese war, the American-Spanish war.
and other important events of recent
years, and showed that the hand of
Providence was engaged in directing
all of them. The world, ho said, was
?trowing closer together, und that space
ind been annihilated. Freedom was
extending throughout the world, and
the Kingdom of God would eventually
be established in every section of the
glebe. lie said that it was a blessing
that slavery had been wiped out of
existence in our grand Itepublic. He
spoke of the wonderful inventions of
man within thc last quarter of a cen
tury. It was a grand sermon, and the
solemn truths wore masterfully pre
sented. The speaker's voice is ? little
weak and at times we could not catch
all of his words, which we regret, for
we would like very much to have pub
lished a full synopsis, at least, of his
sermon, which consumed more than nu
hour's time in its delivery.
Tuesday morning the regular com
mencement exercises ware held in the.
Institute Chapel. After delightful mid
inspiring music, tho exercises were
opened with prayer by Kev. O. L. Mar
tin.
Cadet Lieut. T. R. Hamlin, of Char
leston, ?. C., was then introduced. His
?ubject wa?, "Malions Di? Suicides."
Cadet Adj. L. A. Smith followed with
an oration on "Unity of Purpose."
Cadet Sergt. J. M. Masters, ot this
County, then delivered his oration on
"Unappreciated Greatness."
The feature of the day wns tho an
nual address before tho Cadets by J.
W. Shelor, Esq., of Walhalla. Ho ably
and eloquently discussed the elements
.necessary to success in the 20th cen
tury. He spoke 40 minutes and held
thc attention of Iiis audience through
out.
Tuesday evening the joint debate
took place. The subject was, "Resolv
ed, That Corporations are Beneficial
to a Peoplo."
The exercises were opened with
prayer by Rev. W. T. Caners. The
representatives of the Polyhymnian
Society were W. L. Alston, declaimer;
S. E. Leveret te and J. B. Felton, de
baters. The representatives of the
Calophemian Society were E. R. Par
ker, declaimei ; S. M. Wolfe and J. A.
Wyman, debaters.
All these young gentlemen acquitted
themselves creditably. The judges
rendered the decision in favor of the
affirmative.
