.lohn Dann tells the following on hin
brother Lum, ?inti weare assured by
his neighbors that it is the truth, the
whole truth, ami nothing but the truth;
stud Lum is mum when approached
upon the subject :
Some time ago Lum was employed
us a convict guard at Cooley's camp in
Anderson county, S. C. Among the
convicta was one who became very con
fidential with Lum. He was sent up
for burglary and robbery. Ile told
Lum that after he committed the rob
bery he was pressed so close by his
pursuers that he hid his booty, consist'
ing of several hundred dollars, in :t
hollow stump not far from Charleston,
where lie left it. Lum linnie particular
inquiries as to the whereabouts of the
stump anti fixed the same on the trestle
board of his memory for future refer
ence.
Not ninny moons thereafter Lum
threw up his job at the convict 'camp
anti came back to his cosy Georgia home
near the majestic Savannah. Thoughts
of that treasure stump haunted his dav
anti night dreams until tinnily he de
termined to in search for it.
He got his wife to cook up several
days* rations for him and started tm*,
for that stump r.foot-.
Kravely he trudged onward with
" Kxeelsior" graven on his Quixotic ban -
uer until at last he reached Columbia,
South Carolina's beautiful capital city
on the winding Congaree.
He arrived there footsore and sick,
with an empty haversack and not a red
cent in his pocket.
Learning that he had scarcely tra
versed half the intervening distance to
that far distant stump, lana became
discouraged and determined to beat ?
hasty retreat and place himself in close
communication with his home base of
supplies.
Walking in his exhausted condition
was physically out of the question, so
Lum resolved himself into a highland
stoawny mid hid himself among the
barrels anti boxes in a freight car bill
ed for Anderson, S. C., under lock and
key.
John says he doesn't know how long
Lum remained in the box car without
food and water, but that when he ar
rived at Anderson he was about as
empty as tho promises of a political
candidate before the election.
John also says that Lum may have
traveled more extensively than he has
but that he doesn't know as much.
In the meantime if any one desires A
