(>nlv the other day the writer noticed an article in thc Chai lui te Xnrs under ihr heading, "A Mill that Tani for itself in five Years.'' This article had reference lo thc Tren ton mill, (i aston in. which has just closed its lift h year ol'existcm-e. Thc dividends of Ihr previous four yea l's amount to si? veil ty prr cent, of thc cap ital stock invested, and this year a dividend of thirty per cent, was de clared, showing that thc mill has actu ally paid for itself hy it? earnings in live years. Ilcsides this there is a sur plus of ?^2,000 on hand. This is a re markable record for judicious invest ments in cotton mills in the Piedmont Hell, which should be properly pre scnted to all who have never hereto fore considered an investment in a cotton mill, more especially should this matter be pressed upon our New England brethren who are admitting that thc manu facture of cotton goods belong to the South. During the llrst three months of this year nearly ten million dollars have been ami arr being invested in the Cotton States in cotton mills alone. South Carolina is build ing some, hut the largest enterprises of X?'W Knglaml capital ure locating in North Carolina, t?rorgia and Alabama, and why ! I localise in thc States named thc people arc working day and night to secure these enterprises, but in what position arc we hew to accomplish any thing in the direction indicated? Wc have an organization fin name only) that at times has a meeting with empty benches, without any pecuniary aid for the dissemination of such lite rature as would be setting forth our exceptional advantages we are in a position to oller to manufacturer*, namely, cheaper pow than any other town in this entire section can oller, and yet other communities arr securing these enterprises. St t ange indeed this muy appear to some, while to the close observer of events it looks very plain. We arc simply expecting something for noth ing, and whatever can bc had for noth ing as a rup* is wurt h nothing. i?. I?. mm . -Qm Program ol I nion .Meeting. :td District.
