A-more pitiful sight than a mother and
her child, both captives and shackled in a
dungeon, could not well bc imagined.
There are thousands of mothers and their
babes who lie shackled by disease in the
dungeon of death.
Without knowing it, or having the faint
est comprehension of it, the fault lies with
the mother. ? Too many wqmen enter upon
the responsibilities of wifehood and moth
erhood while suffering from weakness and
disease of the delicate and important or
gans th?t make wifehood and motherhood
possible. . A woman who suffers in this way
cannot be a capable wife aud a competent
mother. Before-entering upon the'duties
and responsibilities of these positions, she
should see to it that Tier health, both gen
eral and local, is thoroughly restored. Dr.
Pierce's Favorite Prescription is the best
of all medicines for this purpose. It acts,
directly on the sensitive organs concerned,
making them strong, healthy and vigorous.
It: promotes regularity' of the fonctions,
allays irritation and .inflammation, heals
ulceration, checks unnatural aud exhaust
ing drains and soothes pain, lt tones and
builds up the shattered nerves: It turns
tile dangers and pains of maternity into
safety and ease. It is a medicine that is
intended fof this one purpose only and is
.good.for no other. Dealers sell it and no
honest dealer will suggest a substitute.
.'Ur. Pierce's Favorite Prescription did me ao
much good that to-day I nm well agata and
stronger tbctf I Have been for year*." writes

About one. o'clock Thursday night
Mr. William Tod J. who lives jual out
side the city limits, south, drove into
the city and to the jail seated in a wag
on with a double barrel shotgun
across his lap and a burly negro for a
driver. Ho woke up the Sherill* and
turned the negro and team over to him
for safe keeping. For sometime past
Mr. Todd has been missing seed cotton
from his cotton house, and had just re
cently made the fastenings on the
house more secure. Thursday night he
heard a noise iu the yard, and looking
through the w indow saw the negro try

and barefooted, he grabbed his gun
aud l ushed out, and as the negro drove
oil" Jie "pulled down on him," and
brought the team to a standstill.
Climbing into the wa iron he quietly
waited for some of the family to bring
his clot bea und shoes, dressed himself,
and ordered the negro to drive to the
city and thence to jail. The negro
gives his name as Iteubiu Hill and his
place of residence. Dr. Watson's farm.
While out gunning Tuesday with
three companions about, his age, Oscar
Smith, age 13, son of Mr. W. H. Smith,
of Broad wny Township, was accident
ally shot with his own gun and killed.
The boys had reached a point about
two miles from Mr. Smith's and about
a quarter of mi!e from Mr. C. L. Tuck

leaned hi? gun against a tree and
stooped down to drink when the gun
fell to the g .-on nd and was discharged,
and the entire load entered his back
just, belo'w The shoulders. His com
panions were almost paralyzed with
excitement ; but one of them ran to
Mr. Tucker's and gave the alarm, and
three young ladies, who were alone at
Mr. Tucker's, responded and ran hastily
to the dying hoy. As they reached
the scene Mr. Mike Hobbins happened
to be passing in his buggy and with
his assistance Oscnr was carried to Mr.
Tucker's house. Rumors were sent to
his home and for medical aid, and
everything possible was done to save
him, but after six hours' suffering hu
died. The remains were interred at

A Beautiful Home Wedding.
Last Wednesday afternoon, at half
past twelve o'clock, a pretty home
wedding was solemnized in this city, the
contracting parties being Miss Mamie
Barr, of this place, and Mr. .lohn Wei
fenden, of Kvinston, Fla. The house
was tastefully decorated with holly
and mistletoe, the parlor especially
being beautiful. The soft radiance of
the many candles made more effective
tho glossy leaves and red berries of the.
holly and the white waxen ones of the
mistletoe. There was a hush of expec
tancy when Mendelssohn's Wedding
March begun, rendered very expres
sively on the piano by Miss Lillie
Brown. The bridal party entered in
the following order : First, two little
maidens, Lila Brownlee and? Leila
Barr hearing the riug upon a silver
tray, followed by the groom with his
best man, Mr. Paul L. Barr. Lastly
came the bride leaning upon the arm
of her sister, Miss Daisy Barr. The
bridal party formed a semi-circle be
fore a pyramid composed of palms,
ferns and ivy and directly nuder a
largo bough of mistletoe, suspended
by broad, white ribbons from the ceu
ter of a canopy of ropes of evergreens
interspersed with chrysanthemums.
Tho ceremony was performed by the
Hov. J. N. H. Summerell.
The bride was gowned in a handsome
suit of military blue taffeta silk, elabo
rately tumbled in black velvet ribbon
and heavy cream Ince. The bouquet,
she carried was composed of large pink
roses and maiden hair terns.
Tho maid of honor was attired in a
handsome street costa nie of tan covet
cloth,'With trimmings of green taffeta
and've!vet, and carried a bouquet of
piuk roses.
After the ceremony the bridal party
left the parlor to the closing strains of
the wedding inarch. An elegant I mich
