- The. Popular Science News gives
the reasons w hy persons should be cov
ered when lying down, or even taking,
a nap. The object is simply this:
Nature takes the time when one is
lying down to give the henri a rest,
ami that organ consequently makes
ten strokes less a minute than when
one is in an upright posture. Multi
plying that by ao minutes gives OOO
strokes. Therefore, in eight hours
spent in lying down, the henri is saved
neurly 0,000 strokes, andas thc heart
pumps six ounces of blood with cadi
stroke it lifts :10,000 ounces less of
Mood in a night of eight hours spent
in bcd than when ono is in an upright
position. As thc blood Hmvs so much
moro slowly through tho veins while
one is lying down, extra coverings
must then supply tho warmth usually
furnished by circulation.
