The most paternal government lum not busied itself to make it in any sense a politi cal problem. According to a French paper, the (?reeks, borrowing an idea flinn the classical Spartans, are now agitating a method (d' put ting a pre mium on marriage in ti somewhat unique fashion. Starting with the idea that, a bachelor has no proper stake in the commonwealth, it is proposed that celibacy shall he a harto the bidding of public office. Get married and give children to the commonwealth before you can run for office. That is the dictum in dehnte. ( Ither nations would watch the experiment with keen inter cat. mu m mu - Thu Peace Jubilee just ended in At lanta was a grand success, sind was productive of grund and far-reaching results. The kind and generous words of President McKinley shows that he earnestly desires the advancement of tho South, the obliteration of section alism und tho unity of the people in all the Slates in a common patriotism. ThcYact that these encouraging words fall from thc lips of a Republican Pres ident should, instead of robbing them of appreciation, instill new hopi* und ut ron ger patriotism, lt. amounts to 'In holding out of thc olive brunell by the representativo of that section, whose ?entiments no longer stand in the way of thc advancement of the South and makes possible the grandest reunited nation the world has ever semi. - ? -CT- - Tho Columbia correspondent of the Hews ami Courier quotes Attorney Gen eral Harber, who has recently been in tho North looking over the political situation, as saying: "lam unquali fiedly for Dewey for the Democratic nomination for President next time. Thc Supreme Court of this Slate has just banded down un opinion in the famous Lowndesville Hunk case, which is of great ?importance, particularly to holders of bank stock. After the fail ure of this bank, in 1804, tilt! creditors instituted proceedings seeking to hold Hie stockholders liable for the debts of the defunct corporation hy virtue of the. provisions of the Constitution of 18J8, and the Acts of the Legislature passed pursuant thereto. The credit ors employed Messrs Porker &. McGow an, ot Abbeville, and Col. J. N. Hrown and Mr. J. W. Quattlobaum, of the An derson Har, to take care of theirsicco - the case. The case was heard l>eforo Judge buchanan nt Abbeville, who de cided in favor of the creditors. Now, Mama, the funniest thing about it was this : I was getting things and putting them in Old Santa's st ocking, and he just kept peeping and watching me all thc time. Why, Mama, X could do nothing ha dly for him. Now, wasn't that naughty in Uncle Sun ta ? I'm sure I wouldn't do him that way, would you, Mama ? But, Mama, some times I am afraid that if I don't peep Willie, and Jack, and Rosa, and Bessie, and the Baby might sec Santa and I would miss him. I have to hold my eyes mighty tight, sure, but I hold them. Mama, I don't know how it was, but somehow it was Uncle Santa's time to get presents, and my time to give them ; so I went down to Christmas Headquarters-down to Mr. C. S. Mother, I looked, and looked, and looked, and got so bewildered I couldn't tell what on earth to got for him. Mr. Mi?or showed me ail his pretty Christmas things, and I see why Santa always makes his Headquarters at the Ten Cent Store.
