Anderson's Now Mayor.
JOHN IV. Hoot?, Ksy.
No bettor example* of a young man who
has made a naroo for hiniHoll' io this city
can be found than tbat nf Mr. John K.
Hood, who, on las: Monday, WHS fleet-<1
to servo tho city ol' Anderson sa Mayor I
for tho next two year*.
Mr. Hood wa-* b ?rn ?J'. Dun West, Jv I J., j

well known throughout thia 8tate aa a
distinguished tendier. Un spout tho

graduated in ins?. Ho aftorwardn taught
school for awhile, and then studied law
in the office of Messrs. Parker Ai. Mc
Gowan, at Abbeville. Di Decembor,
1.SIKJ, be was admitted to tlie bar, after
having passod a moat uredliable exami
nation before tbe Supreme Court of Mouth
Carolina. In .iannary following he came
to Anderson to make bia homo and began
the practioe of bin chosen profession.
Ho was a comparative stranger, but by
bis modest, genial disposition, gentle
manly bearing and upright character be
be made a friend of every acquaintance,
and la to-riuy one of our mont popular
young men. Ile baa served novoral
tarma as Clerk and Treasurer of the city
of Anderson, aud waa a model and effi
cient officer.
In January, is9f>, Mr. Hood formed a
copartnership with Col. H. W. Simpson,
under the firm name of Simpson dc Hood,
which Arm still exists and re?oives a
large share of the practice at the Ander
eon bar. He is a close student and has a
bright future bofore bim in the lino of
his chosen calling.
Mr. Hood baa unlimited confidence in
Anderson's pluck and progressiveness,
and is always ready to take a baud in
auytbing that will advance the business
interests of the city. He will discharge
the duties of tbe office of Mayor faithfully
and conscientiously, and when bis term
of oflice expires the citizens of Anderson
can truly say, "Well done, thou good
and faithful servant."
Drugged and Hobbed in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Journal of the :ird inst,
?aya:
0. D. Madden, of Autun, 8. C., a small
station near Anderson, was drugged and
robbed at the house of Annie Searcy, at
s Thompson nt root, yesterday.
Annie Bearcy, Jim Searcy, ber son,
JLonlne Delgate, Mi'inie Denoan, /.olia
0 ri fhn, Eveline Blaok, colored, and Car
rio o' Urion, colored, ore under arrest for
the crime. Madden would have died but
for the discovery of bio condition by Pa
trolman Gloer.
Morphine waa put in beet- and Riven to
?the man and after be had fallen asleep a
.handkerchief saturated with obloro'orm
waa placed over bis face. Patrolman
.Gloer without any assistance, arrested
the six women and sent them to police
headquarters. Bicycle Call Officer Cov
ington captured Jim Searcy last night in
the rear of a Decatur street resort. S-aroy
waa sendlog a massage to his mother
when arrested.
One of the women gave Madden the
morphine. .Ilia money was theu taken
1 from him and divided between the wo
men in the house.
Several of the women bought wearing
apparel with the money while Madden
T?SS in thc house in an apparently dying
condition. Morphine enough waa given
Madden to have killed half dozen men
had he not hoon given hasty attention at
.ihe Grady Hospital.
A Suggestion.
Jtditor Intelligencer : I suggest to the
incoming City Council, just elected for
the next two yearn, to have the City di
vided into suitable wards before the elec
tion two years hence, and to procure the
necessary legislation for the division of
the city into warde, and for the election
cf an Alderman from each ward. Two
of the Aldermen, just elected, reside on
adjoining lots, ana a third almost within
a stone's throw. In any subdivision into
wards that would be made they would
probably fall in the same ward. Thia is
not their fault, but the fault of the ays
tem under which they have been elected.
They are all good men, and I would not
be understood aa making any objection
to them. My only purpose ls to call at
tention to the fact as an object lesson at a
moment when there ia an interest la mu
nicipal ?lection?. Perhaps thia is the
only city of its slr.e in the State where the
city is not divided into wards and a rep
resentation by wards provided for on the
Council. It ia the very essence of local
government which our municipalities
are designed to secure and fulfil. It
would certainly tond to secure a more
equal application of the police regula
tions in mattera of health, repair of the
streets, sidewalks, ?te., because each
member of tbe Council is apt to know
what is needed in his own ward, while
he may be wholly ignorant of the needs
of other portions or the city, lt would
tend, too, to Increase the sense of respon
sibility of each Alderman, as the special
representative of his own particular
ward, and in thia way the wants of every
?><?. ? vi ?.?- uiljr TTUUIU no wura cioatuy
looked after, and the good of the wholo
be thereby promoted. It would certainly
be ajuster mode of representation.
