and Mrs. Acker, of Bellen, Anderson
Connty, spent the week in the city. Capt.
Acker is one of the most successful and
influential farmers in the great cotton and
agricultural county of the Piedmont. He
was a brave soldier of Orta regiment."

Anderson County has about 5.000 white
voters, and not one of them- should fail to
register. Yonr old certificate is worthies".
We have a new law, and in order to vote
yon will have to have a new certificate.

laying and sitting hens with tobacco. The

Last Saturday morning at 4 o'clock,
while the little infant girl of Mr and Mrs.
L L Hatcher was sweetly Bieeping on its
mother'B breast, its sleep deepened into
that dreamless sleep which knows no
waking. It was sudden, no one expecting
it. A little groan without a struggle, a
rush of wings overhead, a relaxing of the
little fingera and all was over. The
bereaved parents haye our sincerest sym
pathy.
Lant Wednesday nicht at the residence of
Col R B. A. Robinson, of Martin Town
ship, the wedding of nuptial chains was
solemnized between Kir, 0. D. Watson, of
Deans, and Miss Mamie, the popular and
accomplished daughter of Col. Robinson.
The groom is one of Anderson County's
coming farmers and a clever gentleman.
The Intelligencer throws them an old

The m?eting at the First Baptist Church
closed last Thursday night. It has done
great good, not only in the conversion of
those who have not heretofore identified
tbpmselves with the church, but also in
reviving the church membership Thir
teen additions were made to the First
BaptiBt Chnrch when the doors were open
ed for the reception of members on Sun
day morning Mr. Hntson made many

Under the new constitution, in order to
bave the right to vote, a man must be
reeistered again. All of the old registra
tion certificates are done away with and
new ones in accordance with the new order
of things must be secured. It therefore
becomes the duty of every read er of a news
paper to acquaint his neighbor who does
not read the papers of this very important
matter, and we sincerelv hope that our
readers will take some interest in the mat
ter and see to it that every whi te man is
informed.
Another prisoner escaped from the
County Jail abor t 1 o'clock yesterday.
His name was berry Masters, a white
man. who was awaiting trial at the next
term of Court for obtaining goods under
fiilse pretences. Yesterday when Sheriff
Gaines' Bon entered the upper corridor of
the Jail to give the prisoners their ci in nor.
Masters, who had managed to get his cell
door open, ran out into the corridor, down
the stairs and was soon out of sight Sev
eral officers followed him but failed to
capture him.
At G. F. Tolly & Son's furniture estab
lishment thfre are twenty pieces of fnrni
ture undergoing repair* which were for
merly the property of John C. C-ilhoun,
bat which in now owned by CJemsno Col
lege. All of it is of the finest material,
hand carved and came from Earope. One
of.the handsomest ohalrs was presented to
M*. Calhoun by the Empress of Austria.

State President Jos. L Keith and State
Lecturer Welborn. of the Alliance, ad
dressed about seventv five oitieens in the
Court House last Friday. The letter's ad
dress left politics alone, dwelling upon the
gond effects of the order, and was well
received, though without applause. The
address of the former was more to the
point, inviting those who bad forsaken the
ranks to return, and justifying the action
of the Alliance in entering politics by a
merciless modification of the Constitution.
The address.of the latter waH, on the wholu,
a glorification while the former was ore
of justification.
One of the most popular, courteous and
accommodating railroad ooD^notors in
South Carolina is Capt. W. G. Webb, who
in In charge of the passenger train between
Columbia and Charleston on the Atlantio
Coast Line system. He is handsome and
genial, always wears a happy smile, and
the lady passengers on his train.always

Henry Williams, a negro, who was a
few days ago discharged from tho Connty
ehain gang, evidently likes to stay there,
for be is in j ail again. Last Sunday morn
ing abont. 7 30 o'clock be was seen by a
guest of the Hotel Cbiquola breaking into
the store of J A. Ausdn &, O. through
the cellar window in the rpar of the store.
The police and Mr. Austin were at once
notifi?d, a guard in the meantime being
placed at tbe collar window. Mr Austin
poon reached tbe store, and, with Officer
Dilllngbam, went down into the ciliar,
where Williams was found and placed
under arrest.

which is managed by that veteran land

Mr. Earle H Dodd, formerly of Anderson
He is a most efficient and accommodetting
clerk, is very popular with the patrons of
the hotel, and has made many friends in
Charleston. It always gives us pleasure
to meet up with an Anderson boy in a dla

who is also a most clever, genial fallow.

The Rev. W. 8 Wightraan, who a few
years ago was pastor of the Methodist
Church in Anderson, died in Charleston
lnfit week. His death was caused by tbe
intense mental strain under which hi) has
labored recently, which superinduced con
gestion of the brain. His wife died a few
days before after a painful illness, dorlnn
which he was constantly at her bedside
night after night. Mr. Wlgbtmau was
able to attend the funeral, but returned
home, took to his bed. and in less than a
wrek followed his wife to the better land.
He was well known to many of our citi
zens, who will regret to hear of the death
of himself and wife.
A story is being told of a yoniag lady
who found a package of love letters that
had been written to her mother by her
father before they were married. The
daughter paw that she could have a little
sport, and read them to her mother, sub
stituting her own name for that of her
mother, and a fine young man for that of
her father. The mother Jumped up and
down in her chair end shifted her feet anO
seemed terribly disgusted. Finally Bhe
forbade her daughter having anything to
do with a young man who would write
such nonsensical stuff When the young
lady banded the letters to her mother to
read the house became so still that one
could hear the grass growing in the hack
yard.

It has been suggested that the chloken
fanciers get np a county poultry associ
ation. There are a dozen or more persons
in tbe county who are raising standard
bred fowls. It .vould be well once a year
to have them on exhibit, bo that the people
could see ai 1 compare different breeds
and know what the county is doing in the
war of raising fine fowlB. What do the
fanciers of fowls say?
8am. L?ttlejobn, a negro tramp, was
found spcrpted in tbe engine room of tbe
Cotton Mill this morning about 2 o'clock
by the night watchman. The latter tele
phoned police quarters and officer King
went down and arrested tbe negro, who
had on bis person a pistol und in his hands
a hammer and other tools. He has not
explained bis object in entering tbe mill.
Mayor Tolly sent him to the city chain
gang this morning for thirty days.
Alexander Carr, who killed Capt. H. O.
King in Atlanta in 1894 has been declared
insane by a jnry. He was under sentence
to bang last Friday. Soon after the mur
der Carr began to feign insanity. For
more than a year he did not speak a word.
Experts pronounced him a victim of de
mentia, but despite this be was convicted
of murder and sentenced to be hanged.
One month ago, jast a few days before tbe
date set for hia expcntion, he broke bis
long silence and stated that be had been
shamming all tbe time. The Governor
gave him 80 days respite to Bee whether or
not he was sane. He was examined and
pronounced insane, and will be sent to the
asylum. It is still a question with many
whether be is Bane or insane. Capt. King
was well known in this county, having
been born and reared near Belton The
oase of Carr is a strange one, as be boldly
told the jury that be had as much sense as
any one of them, and that he was willing
to be banged for the murder.
Tbe Columbia correspondent of tbe
Newa and Courier, writing under date of
April 23. says: " This morning Secretary
of State Hopkins received an application
for a charter from tbe 'Calboun Falls Com
pany,' whose capital stock is two million
and fifty thousand dollars Tbe directors

Ga., and Granville Beal, of Abbeville, S.

mission of power, and the sale or lease of
water or mechanical power. The principal
business will be transacted at Calboun
Falls. There will be twenty thousand,
five hundred shares at the par valne of

by tbe Calboun Falls Company is an ex
cellent one for such an undertaking. Tbe
Seaboard Air Line and tbe Port Roval and
Western Carolina railroads will afford fine
railroad facilities for the company. Re
cently fourteen thousand ncres in Calhonn
Falls was purchased by Mr Patrick Cal
houn for $46,000. It was formerly owned
by James Elward Calhonn."

Convention, Chattanooga.
On account of the above convention to
be held in Chattanooga, Tenn.. May 8th to
14'b, tbe Seaboard Air Line System, tbe
recognized favorite route of the Southern
people, has arranged to run a " Baptist
Sppcial" from Washington, Richmond,
Norfolk and their entire system, which
