Tho following, collected from many sources, are by no meana all tho common errors met with in npeech, but there are quito enough to put you on your guard. When people set about murdering the English language, they uaually begin with the smaU words : tbua we find a great many errors Brining from the wrong use of pronouns. "You are stronger than her." says Mary, "and she is taller than me." Hero are two common errors in one contoneo-her should be she, and me should be J. "Tina ia a secret," aays Alice, "between you and I." ,' Wrong, Alice ; you ahould say/'between you and me." "Eliza went with Kate and I" Here, again / should bo me. Who and which are often confused. Long ago both worda used to be employed to stand for persona ; ' but nowadays io ho is used when speaking of persons, and wAicA when alluding to things. Hauy of our errors arise from attach ing wrong meanings to words. . ^Reverend and reverent ato very different words, but they aro often confused. Rev erend ia the subjective word, describing, the feeling within a man as ita. subject ; reverent ia the objective word, describing' the feeling with which n man ls regarded -of which he la the object. The words tu apd lay aro very often wrongfully.used.- Tho first ia .inputer verb-vessel lies.in a harbor." The other is an active transitive verb-V^h^n lays an egg." It is decidedly bad gram mar, then, to say, "My cousin laye ill of a fever" ; "The books were laying on tho tabla" ; "The boat was laying, outside the bar/' .Another common error in the mean ings of words is found in such sentences as "Lena walked down the centre of the Street,!'.-and "ino stream vau down tho centre of the town." Both Lena's walk ing and the atream's running are impoa uiblo, for a centre ia rt point. "Ono"o? those houses were sold yesterday." Here the ear is misled by the plural noun "houses." We forget that the verb should bo "wan,'' sgreeiug in number with "one." "Each of the girls are to have a sepa rate share." Unis is au error of the same sort. A re, of course, should be is. The questiou has been raised whether we should say "Two and two is four, or are four," and it hos been laid down by some people as a rule that in all abstract cases, when we merely speak of numbers, the verb is better singular ; but there is as much authority, perhaps more, on tho other side. A number of miscellaneous errors re main to be mentioned. "I shall Oe much pleased to accept your kind Invitation for Wednesday first.' This should be, "I accept with pleasure," for there is nothing future about ymr acceptance. An every-day mistake among tho half educated consists in the use ol' like in tho place of as. For example : "Mic she did" ; "Like I do now" ; "Lite wo were" ; "/Ale she told me." "Six ?jioons full" and "six spoonsful" are different things, though often con founded. To take "six spoonful!*" only om spoon Is needed, but for "six spoon*] full" you must have tlx spoons. Tho use of directly instead of immedi ately is a common error. "Directly Mary came," say? Julia, "I went away." May ono say "veil looklne" instead of "goodlooking V No. Well looking has no standing m respectable society. "Ulandi is a? different to Georgiana UH she could bo." Here to Hhould be /rom. "I intended to hare played on thc niano io-day." This should he, "I intended to play." Namoi of pliices aro often pronounced wrongly, but it is hardly in good taste to make oneself conspicuous in company by giving tho local rendering of the name of any town or district when tho general and outside public have mado up their minds that il should bo pronounced dif ferently."- -North Cand?na Teacher. Iucrcnso of Cancers? From reliable data it is estimated that from fifteen to twenty thousand new cases of skin disease occur among thc poor every year. In 1869 there were 804 deaths from cancer in this city, and lu 1879, 672 deaths from tho same cause. In 1880 thc deaths by cancer had increas ed to Gf>9, and in 1882 781, or more than two deatlw daily. During theso/ourteon ycarc 6,848 persons fd lcd; of cancer in Kow Yprk city. All tho other large cit ies in the United States exhibit the same startling progress of the disease, while tho report of tho registrar general in Great Britain HIIOWS nn increasing prev alence of malady lu that country. Ac cording to tho statistics of tho health department of tho city of Baltimore, thero were seven 'deaths from cancer in that elly in 1830, and 172 from tho samo caus? in 1884*\ Duriug this period tho population had iucreased fivo fold, and tho deaths from cancer twenty-six fold. Tho association of skin disease and cancer in tho same institution is based upon the reasr.u i;,,;t in many instances cancer nttac? s tho skin alone, or appears on or beneath the skin and afterward affects the organs, and that by tb' nlon of akin diseases and cancer many , SOHB may be lcd to seek relief long before the case would be recognized as cancer either by the nationt or by many physicians. A furtuer reason is found in the hope that something may yet be done for can cer by means other than surgical opera tion. To aid th?.:, ii prize fund has already been established to stimulate research in this direction. The cause of the disease is not known. Tho accepted theory in England attributes it to mala ria. The most that can be said respect ing this hypothesis ls that it Is not prov ed. But the fact that cancer is frequent ly observed along water courses, as in London, Liverpool, New York and Baltimore, gives strong probability to I tho theory.-New York jelegram.
