Chier or Police Fant and Policemen
Cummings and Blackman bud a long,
lively race last Monday In attempting to
arrest a negro named Doc. Jones, who, lt
is believed, ia an escaped convict from
one of the phosphate mines in thc lower
part or the State. Thc officers bud been
on the look-out for the negro for some
time, and on Monday they learned that
. he was concealing himself in a house In
I the city. When the negro saw the ofllcera
approaching tho houao, he stait?d on a
run at a two-forty pace. Tho ofllcers fol
lowed him, and soon discovered-that he
was a fleet-footed d?rkoy. They contin
ued in pnrauit and finally captured him
in the swamp near the Railroad trestle
across Rocky River. Tho prisoner was
brought into the city and lodged io jail.
Jonos ls coal black, with a long, doep sear
on the right side of his face, sud ls nearly
six feet high. He was arrestod here two
years ago for having committed some
offence in either Pickens or Ocouoe Coun
ties, and was sont to tho Penitentiary
from one of tbeso Counties. The author
ities have boen notified of his arrest.
Mr. William M. Archer, one or Ander
son's most venerable citizens, died at his
residence In this city, on last Sunday ar
tornoon, in1 the seventy-fourth year of
hts age,-alter an Illness from a complica
? tlon or diseases which prostrated bim for
the past three months. Mr. Archer was
welt known throughout our Comity, and
? honored by all who" knew him for bis
strict integrity, his sound Judgment, and
bis unswerving adherence to tho path of
duty in all the walks of lifo. Mr. Archer
was, bc Toro the wer, Sheriff of Anderson
County, but being ineligible fora second
term under the law, ran only one timo
for the office.' Ho was an unassuming,
straight-forward gentleman, who bsd
only friends among thoso who knew him.
He was for many years a devoted and
faithful member of tho ' Presbyterian
^huroh In thia city. His remains woro
Interred In the Presbyterian cemetery oaf
laat Monday afternoon, Rev. D. E.; Prler
Bon, D. D., conducting the funeral servl
cos, which were attended by a large con
course of the friends and acquaintances

road tax, was pending before tho Siato
Supreme Court, upon whoso dual result

timo or its decision. But Hie darkest
hour is just before the dawn, and to dis
pel this gloom, tho taxpayers or the Ab
hov il lo Townships promptly carno for
ward in the Pall and paid the first instal
ment or their taxes, $10,000 duo last year,
and Mr. C. H. McCormick, or Chicago,
paid in bis handsome subscription or

The citizonsof Andorsou City, realizing
tho necessity of further aid tn savo the
l oud, generously made un additional sub
scription or $?5,000 lu bonds, muk i og

and the $12,000 ill taxes, a .>uni total or

The necessary legislation was promptly
procured to validate this additional sub
scription and consolidate thu now with

at their par value, a very nattering sale.
