V/he? the COV?H Come Home.
Every afternoon I go down to see the
coirs como home. From the meadow to
the milking, they come in rambling
haste. Way down th- shady lane a puf
of dirt arises. The cloud dcepenB until
the view is closed. "The cows are com
ing," call some one. From the rilling
dust emerges the horns, the head, tho
flanks of a Jersey. One after another
the cloud gives them forth, embodying
rapidly until the herd stands revealed.
Up the lane they come troopiug, the dust
cloud banging about theil flanks and
still enveloping tho centaur who speaks
from tho unseen with his pistol like whip
and hurries them on. A charming sight
it is I Tudora, stately queen ol tho herd,
leads the way. With bead uplifted aud
swinging pace she wheels into thc wido
gate, the aroma of tho clover hanging all
about her and the peace nf tho meadow
beaming in her eyes. After her the herd
-Jerseys all and every ono a jewel
Crossing in slow tumult through the gate,
ringing in their rich udders the essence
of tho rifled pastures, as honey b^^s
bring homo tue stolen sweets of the
flowers. Once in tho open lot the herd
disperses and each cow wends her way to
ber especial stall.
Then begins the milking. Osceola, a
colored man of great dignity and reserve,
with his hair dono up in cottoustring
curl papers, is in cbargo of tho herd.
For fourteen years ho has been trusted
and found worthy. He bas his assistants,
who place the hugo milk cans, each with
its Btrainer, ut convenient intervals
through tho barn. The assistants then
with cans of clear water wash the dusty
udders and respectfully retire. Then
Osceola's lime has como. Adjusting his
white apron he leaves tho crowd, whose
questions ho has been answering with
caution and hauteur, and seatH himself]
by tue sido of tho first cow in the lirst
row.
Milk? Well, I ju?t wish vou could
toe him ! With two sinewy hands and u
rotary motion, tho head, thrown back, the
foot beating time, and tho milk fairly
hissing into thc pail, in two big streams.
Three minutes to the cow, and with Ono
energy and abstraction be moves from
one stall to another, filling tho big milk
cans as he goes. Picking out a half
dozen Tavorite cows he milked thirteen
and a half gallons in fifteen minutes, on
a test, and somehow or other left tho
impression that he hadn't bulf done his
best. From 100 to 110 gallons ia a day's
milking, and it is cow's milk, too, and
ubi milkman's milk.-Henry W. Grady
in the Atlanta Constitution.
A Marvelous Little Stream.
At a distance of thirty miles South of
tho River Diamanto our route passed by
n natural object of considerable interest
-a stream, or rather rill, of yellowish
white fluid like petroleum isssulng from
tho mountain side at a considerable
height and trickling down tho slope till
lost io tho porous soil of the valley be
low. The Botirco from which it flowed
was at the junction where a hard met
amorphic rock, interspersed with 'small
crystal!) of agnite, overlay a stratum of
volcanic tuff. It was formed like the
crater of a volcano and full of black,
bitum.nous matter, bot and sticky, which
could be stirred up to the depth of about
eighteen inches.
Floundering in it was a polecat or
skunk (Mepbetis varians), having boon
enticed to its fate by the desiro of scour
ing a bird caught in the natural bird
lime, till a bullet from the revolver of
one of the party terminated the skunk's
struggle to exterminate itself from tho
warm and adhesive bath in which it was
hopelessly held captive. The overflow
from this fountain was, a described, like
a stream of petroleum two or tbreo feet
wide trickling over a bed of pitch or
Borne Buch substance, whioh extended to
a much greater width along the edge of
the running stream at its contact with
it. This material was bf a very sticky
nature, booming gradunlly harder as it
spread further out,, assuming the appear
ance of asphalt when it became mingled
with the loose sand of the adjoining soil.
While engaged in examining this
natural curiosity, we came upon two
?mall birds, caught ia the sticky aub
stance at the edge of the stream ; they
wcro still alive, but upon releasing them
both tbs feathers and the ekln came oil"
where they bad come in contact with the
bituminous matter, so that we had io
kill them to put an end to their suffer
ings. No doubt they had been taken in
by the appearance of water which the
stream presented and bad alighted to
drink, when they discovered their mis
take too late. Their fate suggested tho
idea that in a district so devoid of water
others of the feathery tribes must con
Btantly bocome victims to the same
delusion in a similar manner, and upon
a close inspection of the margin of the
stream the correctnera of this inferenco
was established by the discovery of
numerous skeletons of birds imbedded in
it ; nur were those of numil quadrupeds
unrepresented among which we recog
nized the romains o? a fox.--From Across

The old Hebrew idea of a mao ol
honor is set forth io the I Val m i - I'M words:
"Ho that sweareih to bin own hurt, nnd
cbangeth not." Wo express the same
idea by our phrase : "His word is as good
as his bond."
A mau who would merit tho applica
tion of these epithets to himself should
be careful to heed these old say i ogs:
"Make few promises," and : ''Never
promise moro than you are ablo to per
form."
There are men of business, men among
those that scorn to tell a lie, deliberately,
who seldom heed this wise advice. They
allow the press of business, or the desire
' 'J retain an impatient customer, lo tempt
them to make promises which they are
unable to keep either to thc car or to the
hope. Such men generally find that
their expedients -lamp them as unrelia
hie. In the long run, tho man who is
cautious in promising, but faithful in
performance, is the one whom success
welcomes.
A few years ago, a lad entered a print
ing office in England, &? un apprentice.
He was slow ?ii his movements and the
irritated foreman often scolded him for
not working rapidly.
During n rush of work, tho foreman
would call out, impatiently :
"Hob, how soon will you have that
job done?"
"In un hour, sir," would be the calm
but provoking reply.
Thc other boys, is hen asked a similar
question, would rosily :
'"In a few minutes, sir," and thereby
soothe the impatience of thc hurrying
foreman.
Hut tho overseer was not blind, though
be was nervous and a "driver." He
imt i ced that Bob's job was ni ways finished
at the promised time. Tho other hoya,
on the contrary, were never up to time ;
for their "almost ready, sir," meant noth
ing more than their anxiety to uvoid a
scolding.
The result was that Bob became tho
trusted boy of the office; and was allowed
to take his own time in working out his
task. Ho carried out this plan of doing
exactly what lin said he would ulong with
him when bc was promoted. To day
tho slow boy of ten years ago is tho
foreman of tho office ?nd oversees ono

Devastating Tower of tim Locust.
A swarm of these insects stopped tho
advance of a Russian army. They lilied
thc air and blinded both officers and men,
so that the former could give no order,
and even if they had ?ono ho the men
could not have obeyed thom. The burses
would not fnce them and they lny on tho
ground many inches thick. Every man
and horse in tho army was encrusted with
the insects and their clothing was literal
ly eaten off tho men as they stood help
less and blind. The railway? were use
less as the "locust covered tho rails and
the oil which exuded from their bodies
when crushed prevented tho driving
wheel from "biting." After they settled
whole regiments were deta?'.cd for pur
pose of trampling them to death,
Tronches were dug across their path and
filled with burning coals but thc crowd
ing swamps actually smothered the fire
so vast were their number. Kven in a
lillie island liko Cypru\ in 1882 one
fifth of the fiutire revenue was spent in
destroying the locust and especially their
eggs. When these eggs arc laid they
are euciosed in a horny envelope culled a
"pod," each pod containing thirty five
eggs. In seven months 1.330 tons of pods
were destroyed. Now a singlo ton ol
pods contained 60,000,000 eggs and-yet
in spite of this almost incredible destruc
tion the locusts aro still dreaded plagues
and abow little if any symptoms of
diminution in nu inborn. Thc Arabs say
that the dark mottling upon the wings M
tho locusts are ancient Arabic aud tue?!
signification is as follows :
"We are the army of the great God.
Each of us lay ninety-nine eggs. If we
laid tho hundredth we should destroy the
world."
Not long ago I saw a letter from a gen
tleman over whose property a locust ?warm
had passed. Ho said that in the morning
his gardon was a paradise. In the after
noon it was all blackened and withered
as if a fire had swept over it. Uncon
sciously he used the very same image
which the prophet Joel employed some
2,600 years ago. "A fire dc von rot hf before
them nnd behind them a finnie burneth;
thora is the Garden of Eden before them
and behind them a desolate wilderness."

Some interesting result-, have been
Sielded by the investigation coricerninj*
umau growth, which have been made by
n committeo of the British Asaocialioo
for the Advancement of Science. It is
mown that growth is most rapid during
the finU five yean of life, when both
sexes grow alike, the boys being a little
taller and heavier thou the girls. From
five to ten the boy? grow a little faster
than the girls, but from ten to fifteen the
girl? grow the Hotter, ami between tho
age? of eleven and a half and fourteen
and a half are actually taller than the
boys, while from twelve and a half to
fifteen and a half they are heavier. The
boya then take the lead, growing at first
rapidly but afterwards ?lower, and com
plete their growth at about tho twenty
third year; while girls grow very slowly
after fifteen, and reach their full statue
at about the twentieth year. It is gen
erally supposed that "grown up" people
do not increase in height, but these re
searches appear lo ?how that men gain
slowly in statue until their fiftieth year,
and make a more rapid increase in weight
up to the age of sixty. (Statistics are too
incompletb to determine the growth of
women after the age of twenty-three.
