The Dog Question.
A correspondent of tho Fairfield Neu
and Herald raines a cry, a regular hon)
against the dogs. His bog and catii
food, prepared at night, was stolen b;
thsse half starved animals, and h
thought bo would take the dog census o
his neighborhood. Within one mile o
? his abode, ho found fifty-three; eigb
being owned by whites and forty FCVOI
by colored people. Ho then estimate
the dogs of tho County at ten thouhand
and, at tho lowest living estimate, tin
amount of bread, or its equivalent, con
sumed by them is equal to 00,000 bushel
of corn. This corn would raise 7?0,00(
pounds of pork, or enough for .0,00(
people.
In Spartanburg County, with Us 42,
OOO inhabitants, there are at least 10,00(
dogs that are just as expensive ai those
ol' Fairfield, hut one might as well at
tempt to deprive a man of the right tc.
volo os to restrict him in the nu m her o:
dogs ho may own. The mau fond ol
blooded dogs will have his . <. 11< J.. and
pointers and they are ahout ai destruct
ivo as thc bob tailed, yellow curs of the
"nigger." Then the fox hunter must
have his hounds and they make a pretty
broad road through the colton field when
they Mart a fox or rabbit. Dogs are
very much like people, they aro not
always under the best command. In
fact we have seldom Feen dogs much
superior to their owners. Il is bard for
n dog to rise above its raising. The dogs
of aristocratic owners will kill sheep and
fowls and commit other genteel depreda
tions that your yellow-eyrd, slab-sided
mongrel would not dream of.
There arc certainly too many dogs in
our County, too many of all sorts, and
they are not properly controlled. They
consume too much food in proportion to
tho benefits they bring, unless you count
the pleasure of owning a dog amongst
tho benefits. That is beyond price.
There is nothing superior to it, unless it
be the owning of five or nix dogs. The
supremo happiness ol' the poor man,
whether while or black, that is tho
owner of about five poor, raw-boned,
mangy dogs, no two alike in any way, is
beyond human calculation. Thc pleas
ures of tho fox chase siuk into :t sombre
and funeral procession, when you com
pare it with a half dozen negroes with
about eighteen dogs, of nil degree?, in
bot nuriuit alter "molly cotton tail."
That's genuine- fun.
Legislators may discuss the dog and
plead for bis extermination ; doctors may
hold up tho terrors ol' hydroohohia
before people; old women may complain
of their eggs being sucked hy "nasty,
trifling hounds," but the dog is here and
ho is going to stay. Tho promise or
prophecy is that thc poor will always bo
with us, and wherever you see the" poor
man the dog is not far away. Those
who raiso so many objections to dogs
always mean their neighbor's curs. No
man ever acknowledged that ho owned
u sheep killing, egg sucking whelp.
His dogs nrc always perfect.
AB tho dog is going to stay, tho best
thing will be to improve his morals. To
do this the owners must set them a good
example. Dogs havu lois of cense and
they understand moro than they got
credit for. When a smart pointer hears
his mistress abusing and back-biting ber
neighbor, he thinks it bis bounden duty
to slip across and break up the hen's
nests or kill some of tho young fowls of
this bad neighbor. The dog IB just car
rying out tho thoughts of the owner.
Tho black mouthed cur enters into all
his master's prejudices and animosities.
Not being able to talk and too much of
u dog to uack-bite, bo takes his spite out
in killing sheep or worrying bogs. A
good example would wonderfully im
prove the dogs.-Sparlanburg Spartan.

How Success Is Won.
Qcurgc Stephenson, unable to rend thc
alphabet till bc was eighteen, working
in the coal pits for six-pence a day, and
nt?n?ing tho boots nnd patching the
clothes of bis fcllow-workmcu in tho
evenings to earn a few extra peonies
that be might attend a night school, is n
good illustration of what a poor and
ignorant boy may bicorne. Never idle,
never above, doing thc commonest work,
never an atc-drinker, as was tho custom
nmong miners, he showed thc fine quali
ties' of bis tinturo by giving thu first
money which he ever earned, one hun
dred ami lilly dollars, to his blind father
that he might pay his debts.
When he became an engineer and pro
jected a railroad from Manchester to
Liverpool, the people said "ho in a mad
man. His 'roaring steam engine' will
Pet the houses on fire with its sparks, the
smoke will pollute the air, and the car
riage makci^ and coachmen will starve
for want of work." Thc excitement
following his public proposals was in
tense. For three days he vs ns questioned
by a large committee of the House of
Commons. This was one of the ques
tions: "If n cow gets on the track of
BO eugine traveling ten miles an hour,
will it not lie in an awkward situation?"
Very soberly answered (?corge .Stephen
son, hut with a twinkle in his eye:
" Yes, very awkward indee.I for the cow |"
The government inspector said that if
ever a locomotive neut ten miles an hour
ho would "undertake to eat a stewed
eugine-wheel for breakfast." Stephen
son's "Rocket," a clumsy engine, but a
wonder at the time, and now to he seen
at Kensington Museum, made the trial
trip at an average speed of fourteen
miles an hour, and MP Ino inspector had
tile opportunity of keeping his promise.
During the next ten years, being em
ployed to open up railroads in every di
rection, Stephenson became renowned
and wealthy, the friend of .Sir Robert
I'eel, owner of a large country ?eat, 'ind
the pride nf langland. He declined thc
honor of Knighthood. His famous son,
Robert, said of him, "His example and
his character mudo un' the mau I am."

The Rug Cured Himself.
A special dispatch from Williamsport,
l'a., contains tho following remarkable
snake story : John Davis and i Icorge
.Miller drove from Collinsville lo this
city. When they were crossing tho
mountain at a place known as tue Old
Hermit's, a valuable coach dog which
accompanied them ran oil' into thc woods.
.Soon afterward they heard him yelping
in a peculiar manner. Holli men jumped
from thc wagon und hurried in tho di
rection ol the cries. They caine in sight
of thu dog in a ludlow and found him in
a fight willi several rattlesnakes, which
surrounded him on a large flat rock, and
struck him from every side. Miller and
1 ?Avis each seized a long club and went
10 tho dog's assistance. They killed
eleven rattlesnakes, und many others
escaped among tho rocks. Tho largest
one was four feet long mid had seventeen
rattles. While 'bc men wero busy cut
ting off tim rattles of the snakes they
had slain, Miller was overcome by the
peculiarly offensive odor that character
izes rattlesnakes, and Davis was obliged
to help him away from thc spot. Il wits
several minutes before hu recovered
from the effects of the poisoned air.
Tho dog was nowhere to be sceu. Davis
went back into the woods lo look for
him. in passing by thc spot wheru the
snakes had been killed, hu saw a number
ol live ones which had come out of their
holes amoug tho rocks, gliding around
their deud companions, springing their
rallies anti every motion denoting fury.
Davis bent a retreat, and weut of!' in
another direction, culling his dog. Sud
denly ho came upon tho dog with its
body imbedded in a miro bolo in a
swampy spot. Its bend alone was above
tho surface. Dogs bitten by rattlesnakes
instinctively seek such places and bury
themselves in tho mud. Old snake
hunters ?ny that if a dog is p.bls to find
swamp mud'and covers himself with it,
11 will invariably draw out the poison.
Davis loft his dog in tho .swamp, and
drove on tn this city willi Miller. Last
evening tho dog arrived homo, apparent
ly none thu worso for its encounter with
tho venomous reptiles, although it must
have been bilton by them many times.
- if a man wi..its peace to reign in
tho household ho should count ten before
sneaking ut limos when ho feels as if his
clothes don't fit him. And on divs
when the kitchen stove doesn't draw be
should count 480.
