John Morgan's command from Kentucky. The Yankees called u? Mor gan's Horse Thieves, while the inhftbi tanta of the mountain districts ol Kast Tennessee would ask, when they met a squad of Mi in a bridle ? ctn. "Hoes yos/uns belong to Mister Morgan'-; critter back company ?" In the spring of '64 Morgan's command had jurt come up from South Carolina, and had gone into camp at Abingdon, Virginia, when word came that Gen. Crook, the present Indian fighting hero, with (?en. Averill, was mo vine with a heavy force on Wytheville. We took up our line of march for that town, and right well do I remember the happy face-, of the old men, the women, and cbidren who lined the curb-tone" of the principal street ns we rode our horses by fours in a triumphal entry style before the admiring gaze of these non-combat ants. There were no uble bodied men in .Southern towns in those days. On the opposite fide of the town, in a beau tiful woodland pasture, wc went into camp. Most of our horses were turned loose to graze while the men were busy building dog hoti-es to sleep in, or hunt ing wood and water. A sudden change came over the camp. Thc clear notes of a bugle rang out the familiar, but now ominous order, ''Saddle up your horses." Nearly 800 men were instantly on their feet, tho officer* shouting "saddle upi] saddle up !" and the men calling to one another. "Bill, have you seen my mare? ' "Bring that bridle back here." "Where i? my blanket ?" and all tho other hubbub of a hurried departure. But here and there could be seen thc cool old soldier deliberately folding the blanket that an swered for both saddle and sleeping pur poses, smoothing out every wrinkle so as not to hurt the bone's back, placing it with great precision high up on the with ers, setting thc old "Texas tree" carefully over it, and drawing a deft knot in the belly band such as only nu old hand can make. We were all loon in line, and the or ders followed in quick succession, "By twos right into line." Gen. Mor gan stood in the road and shouted, "( 'lose up, men," ns we galloped by him. To my taste there is nothing so gloriously exhil erating as the hurly-burly of a brisk fight -tho rapid orders, th? rattle nf sinai i arms, the boom of the big guns, tho wild ?.heut and rush of the charge. All sense of fear is lost, and nothing is thought of but winning a glorious victory. But these first picket shots mnkc you realize that there is death in tho air, and you think of home and perhaps of religion if you've got any. Fortunately for us there was not much time for indulging in these gloomy thoughts. Wo were soon in "lineot light,'' ns wo always called it, and Col. Bowles rode out in front ol us und at the top of his voice shouted, "Now, boy-, if you want to give thom the bellyache, shoot at their knees." We dismounted and rap idly moved forward laking shelter behind a rail fence. The firing wns rapid, but tue distance, some five hundred yards, too grent to do much execution. Some oue soon raised our old yell, "Luok out for Morgan's mon," everybody went over the fence, and to my surprise, tho ene my's line began to fall back. Il now be came a running fight and kept so until about f> o'clock in the afternoon, wheu our line brought up against a stake-and - rider fence. The enemy wa? equally ws?! posted ou the brow of tho opposite hill. The ground, dipped between tho two linea ot battle, and a creek lined with alder bushes, ran through the little valley about cqui-distant between us. The ene my had made a "lie-Id hospital" near and on our Bide of the creek, nud as wo lay behind the fence we could see a number of dead horses and sumo men with clean white haversacks on them. Theso haversacks were small bags, and I becamo very much interested in them. Wo had not had a mouthful of coffee for more than four months, and, turning to tho Boldicr by my side, I remarked : "Thompson, do you seo those haversacks down tuero?" A smile crept over his face as he replied that he did. "I'll bet you they aro filled with coi fee," said I. "You hear all these bullets going over our heads? Tho Klmira Advertiser publishes the following interview willi a chemist of that city : *Tt i-> stated that you have found the highest toned grades of tobacco to be badly adulterated with opium," said thc writer interrogatively to ibu doc tor. "Yes, ?ir,"' replied the scientist, .that is in a measure true. Not long a^o I collected, by purchase of reputable dealers, a dozen packages of the most prominent and high priced cigarettes to b?. had. These I forwarded lo a Pitts burg chemist to be unaly ?eil with special reference to the opium which public opinion had only half led me to believe might be found in them. With them I ?eut some cheaper grade" of cigarettes. The result of the analysis was to me an itstounding one. Now, th?; etfecls of opium smoking, ealing or absorblion in any form are gen erally known to bo very dangerous, and, if carried tu the extreme, deadly. Hence I need not dwell upon the significance of the discovery. .So much for the bi -t cL-a reltes.
