Jersey Cow-Don't (Jet Cheated.
As there is now a 'let up' in our long
dry spell and it is raining beautifully, I
havo the heart and leisure lo comply
with my promise and give you my ideas
of Jersey cattle. They have been bred
for years for their milking qualities alone
and excel so far all other breed-* accord*
j Hg to the tests both in the quantity and
quality of their butter. They are kind,
gentle, docile and affectionate in their
dispositions and very pretty little things
-most excellent for the butter dairy and
for family cows. It is not the quantity
but thc quality of their milk which gives
them their distinction. Tho males arc
generally spiteful, cross and vicious
which is" strange when the females ar? so
gentle and kind. Thc calves are very
tender and delicate and require good care
and attention. As a breed they are a
small-boned, light-fleshed cattle, which
arc hard to fatten. They take on flesh
very slowly and arc- therefore un li lied
for beef cattle, if there was any ol' them
after you get them fat. lt is perfectly
understood among beef raisers that heavy
fleshed animals lay on fat more readily
than light, and tin- flesh is generally
more tender ?ind juicy. 1 bereforu as
there arc but few such animals as Al
?beti I'unzoy Vallie 'I"? 2nd., ami Mary
Ann of St. Lamberts, this breed is not
the one for tho general purse* of the
country. It takes a great deal of picking
to get ii first class cow of the Jersey as
well as all other breeds, ami unless you
get a good butter cow, you have the next
thing to nothing. Her calves arc too
small for veals and t.o>, poor for any mar
ket except Gordansville, Va., where the
negroes might sell a ?piatter on ti biscuit
for a snack. The grown cattle are loo
small for oxen of which so many ?ire
used in thc South, ami ber own carcass
is worth but little for thc shambles. No
breed of cattle has bad moro care be
stowed lipon them. None of late ye .rs
have lind the benefit o:'KO much printer's
ink. The cows that make ibo enormous
yields of butter arc well prepared for tho
tesl ami of course have all of thc best
butter diet they can consume during the
test, (amt it is seldom you ever get any
clue lo the amount of good rich feed they
consume) and when the test is finished
the great yield of thia wonderful cow is
heralded over thc whole land and not
one word said about all those lhat on thc
common treatment of cows, make noth
ing. We arc thu? led to suppose that
the entire breed would do the same
thing or something like it, if their owners
would just taku thu troublo to make Ibo
test and let it be known. It is only
those families of Jerseys that have been
very strongly in bred in the great butter
strains that you can count on breeding
your (ino cows like themselves, and even
then our great Jersey financiers generally
prefer to sec their performance at thc
pail before they pay bargoo {trices for
them. There is no breed of cattle in my
estimation more valuable for any singlo
speciality than the Jersey, and no breed
in which the uninitiated can be moro de
ceived and cheated for the simple reason,
that they are bred for butter alone, and
if they do not make that, they aro of
very little value fur any other purpose.
Thc good ones uro worth more money
than tho average farmer bas to pay for
them and the bad ones wont yield bim
much profit. The breed of cattle which
will suit the farmer best is tbut one
which will niako bulter und milk tor bia
family, oxen for bis teams, and good val
uable carcasses of beef for the hhnmbles
when bo is done with them. Which ut
thc improved breeds now in tho United
States will unit your country best for all
these purposes, lime und experience
alone will tell, but, I feel sure, it won't
bo tho Jersey. Still I like to go into tho
fields and pct and onrcass tho kind, af
fectionate, pretty little things and like
very much to eat their rich yellow,
sweetly flavored butter. No one should
buy s Jersey without knowing it? actuHl
performance at the pail if old enough to
milk. If too youl:** to milk, know well
tho performance ot its ancestors in their
yield of butter for several generations
Lack; that it has a good, rich, yellow
hido on it, good milk veins, and ns many
of tho other marks of u good mother as
possible, and bo can then get cheated
quite as often as be likes.

Visions of Jim-J?ms.
"Tho warnings nome di inking mon

Tim Suicide of Three Venetian Sisters.
Thc particulars of tho suicido of thu
three sisters of tho name of Angeli have
caused great consternation in Venice.
These three young girls left their house
on the afternoon of Monday and walked
as far as the iii va degli Schiavoni. Hero
they took the steamboat, which was run
ning tho Infi time I hat afternoon to tho
Lido. Ono of tho young Indies, before
starting, had expresse'' a desire to go in
it gondola. During i short journey
they sat in the cabin with the steward
und appeared very melancholy. One of
them asked what time thc last boat re
turned to Venice. They alighted at the
Lido, walked as far as the beach and
were soen late in the evening walking
together. As they did not return home
that evening information was given lo
the police, who at once traced their
movements up to a late hour on thc day
of their appearance. Tho news that a
fisherman had discovered one of the bod
ies on tho coast near Malamocco created
much sensation, it now appears certain
that they committed suicide. One of
tho sisters was sullcring very severely
from her eyesight and the second was
subject to epileptic Hts. They lind on
several occasions declare * that they found
lifo miserable anti would put nn "end to
it. The youngest of the sisters, a girl of
extreme beauty and grace, had been
heard to say that shu would " t live an
hour after her sisters'death. They had
lost their mother, whom they cdorcd,
aud it appoint that before starting for
tho Lido they had placed a wreath of
Howers on their mother's tomb. In the
room of one of tho si.?ieis was found a
volumo of Manzoni'ii "Promcssi Spo^i,"
left open at tho chapter describing the
sadness of Lucia on having her native
home.

She Lost Her Handkerchief.
A laughable incident occurred the
other evening on a South Side car. A
nice, modest looking girl took her seat
near the front door of the car next to a
well-dressed middle-aged gentleman.
She lnid her dainty lace handkerchief in
her lap to adjust her bat just BS the car
door was opened and n gust of wind sent
the delicate 'kerchief into the lap of ber
neighbor. N8be hesitated about reaching
for it whin the gentleman, glancing
downward, beheld something white, and,
being n little near-sighted, at once
jumped to tho conclusion that he had
met with a disaster and lost a button and
his shirt needed attention. Ho swiftly
flapped his overcoat across his left, ana
with his right hand tucked tho offending
linen out of sight in a jiffy. Several
persons who noticed the act were con
vulsed with laugh tor, and the gentleman,
not dreaming of the real cause, soon af
ter left the car, Il any South Side wife
