Ho had accumulated considerable prop
erty, but tho results of tho war left him
poor, and it was a source cf great disquiet
to him that he waa not able to meet his ?
ante-war obligations; but ho gave up ail ,

He served as Magistrate for many years, ,
and was an acceptable officer. His judg- j
ment was strong and dear, and bUjnlnd

Ho seemed to be fully alive to the current
events of the times and in sympathy with
them. He was a friend of education, lio
labored long and faitbfolly in behalf of the
endowment of Furmon University, and in
public assemblies presented its claims with
speeches of considerable Power- He, at
