The Premium List of the Sixteenth An

iscertained that the Presbvterian Synod
would meei in Anderson during the week
elected for the Fair. So at a meeting of
the Board on the loth inst, it was decided
to bold the Fair the week prececding the
Synod, to-wit : on the 17th. 1 St 1- and 19th
nf October. Parties receiving the Premium
List will please bear this in mind, and
make a note of il. We are informed that
there will not onlv be special attractions on
the ground each day of the Fair, but that

On last Sunday a gentleman of our ac
quaintance concluded that he, with the as
sistance of one ol' his boys, would cook tho
Jinner, bis wife being away Lom home und
the cook having gone to the camp meeting.
Accordingly he went to work and souii had
i sumptuous dinner prepared. Among the
javory dishes cooked was a tender fried
"locken. Our friend felt a little- proud of
Jiu manner in which be bad nreparcj the
Jinner, especially the fried chicken. His
?ppolite was as sharp as a razor, and he sat
lowu to the table ieeling as if he could de
four four ordinary dinners. After cleaning
:wo or three hones ol' the choicest pieces of
he chicken, he remarked to his son that it
ind a peculiar taste, and the hoy ugreed
nilli bim. As they continued cuting, the
}ad taste increased, and our friend began
o feel a little uneasy. Finally the boy
laid : "Father, are you right certain you
mt pepper on the chicken?" "Yes," re
plied the father, "for I got it out Ol that
little can in the closet." "Why, Father,
hat is not thc pepper box." "What is it,
hen?" inquired tho father, in an aston
ished tone. "That is the box that contains
he cattle powders," replied the boy. The
tither could nor. believe it. They went and
ixamined the can, and sure enough, instead
if seasoning the chicken with pepper, he
tad used Foutz's cattle powders. We can't
ell you bis name, but if you sw u man

A Vlftll to Fort HUI.
Mn. EuiToa : While near Seneca assisting
Kev. II. J. Uuess in a special meeting du
ring last week, I was told that I was within
a few miles ?'t Kurt Hill, the former hume
ul Juiin c. Calhoun, South Carolina's
greatest Statesman. I immediately deter
mined tu visit that histori? place. "
Naturally, it is highly favored. The
view ol the mountains is very line, and
tiie large, spreading oaks, and rolling
?awn, make it a romantic spot. The house
is not very large, lt i> two stories high,
and Las two Porticos, the rouf ul each be
mg supported hy four large brick columna.
As I rode thrungli the grounds I seemed to
feel the spirit of the great man, and in
inmd could easily reproduce him as he
doubtless often walked or rode along these
ways, in the bouse, I was oven more im
pressed, and could see him as in deep
thought he pondered over the interests of
the Slate or Nation, talked of these
allai rs to bis friends, or laid aside all cure
to enter into Iiis soual and domestic en
joyments.
I was courteously received by Col. T. <;.
Clemson, who is ? son-in-law of John C.
Calhoun, and now lives at Fort Hill. He
told me that Kurt Hill waa so named l>v
Mr. Calhoun fruin an old fort which once
stood on a bluff on the Seneca River, with
in the bounds of the estate. The spot is
still marked by an old well, which was dug
hy the soldiers, they not caring to venture
to thu spring, which was some distance off,
for feur they might he surprised by tho
Imiians from amid the cane-brakes by
which the spring was surrounded.
Col. Clemson showed me a queer old
pieceof furniture, a sort i i' book case, io
which then* is much interest attached.
When the fr?calo Constitution" was laid
by, some of Mr. Calhoun's friends had the
mai.o^atiy set, from the Comiuander'a
cabin, remodeled into (his piece of furni
ture, and presented to bim. It was ship
ped from Washington by water, went by
way of Savannah, and was unloaded from
a boat on the Heneen right at Mr. Calhoun's
home. Special efforts have been made to
[jet it for a pince in thc Louisville Exposi
tion, but it lias not yet gone.
I also saw a pair of large cow's horns
brought fruin the Island of Cyprus, and
presented to Mr. Calhoun by Commodore
Decatur.
The above are only a few of thc items of
interest gathered np on a short, but pleas
ant, visit to that home, hallowed by si
many associations with the illustrious of
this and other States.
Hut the great man is gone, and his home
fast falling Into decay, and to the thought
ful pilgrim, ".Sic traniit gloria mundi" seems
to be written over all. as he looks at the
?hadow of departing greatness. So much
in tho way ot moralizing.

hing of the man so praised. Some two

it my school room. I could not then make
mt the purpose of his visit to our commu
nty. lt is very plain to nie now. He is
the" author (reputed) of a little book enti
tled "A Great Truth in a Nutshell," a pub
lication which, in spite of ita intrinsic ab- .
mrdity, is calculated to do a vast deal of
harm to the negro race. It is for the nio:t
part u compilation of the hackneyed lies of
the past, told in language calculated from
its very incomprehensibility to strike the
fancy of the poor people to whom it is ad
dressed. He has a large following here,
and is doing, in my judgment, very nefa
rious work, the effect of which will be felt
hereafter in the complete estrangement of j
the colored people trom those influences
which alone can elevate and make them
useful and intelligent citizens. This fellow
ia an adventurer, bold and perfectly unscru
pulous, I think. He is Bhrewd enough un
der cover of his book to be a politlcaremis
gary, and coming Ironi Virginia at this time
he may be one. At all events, ho and his
doings "bear watching." His headquarters
are here, and he intends, I hear, to open a
school very soon. I have taken good cart
that he should have my opinion of him.
I do not know that ho can do our party
any harm, but he can do our colored peo
ple harm, and it is our duty to protect them
when we can. I wish I had the book to
send you. You will find it hard to get hold
of a copy. 1 did by accident, and lent it to 1
Mr. Todd for a night, with some comments,
but the owner has it now and I doubt if I
can get it again. Excuse this burned
scrawl, and if the information conveyed be
stale or of no value treat it as a ''picket re
port," merely showing that the sentinel on

"1 reached Westminster August the 19th..
that night 1 was seized with a violent at
tack of cholera morbus. Fifteen actiuii9on
the bowels occurred in le.ss than four hours.
Tho pains kept on incroasing and tho ac
tions on my bowels were more frequent.
The usual " remedies, Paregoric, Jamaica
Ginger, Ac , were promptly, vigorously and
persistently used,hut without avail. The
symptoms wero growing worso and these
remedies were more than useless. By a
lucky and happy thought Norman's Neu
tralizing Cordial was procured and one
dose, in a few minutes, brought marked re
lief and four or tive more effected a com
plete cure. Before I began the use of this
medicine, I was in the greatest agony, my
bowels unchecked, and I was so completely
exhausted as scarcely to be able to speak
above a whisper. The relief was so sudden
and so complete, that I could hardly realize
it. and I knew no bounds to thc expression
of my gratitude for the remedy that saved
me from impending death. 1 now feel, I
am doing a service to my fellow-men in
letting them know its merit? that they also
may have its aid in time of their danger.
