Nearly a century ago, when Went Vir ginia, thinly aettlcd anti cleared, was a favorito fighting ground of the Indian tribes, there lived near the Kananda Falla a Hellier of Dutch extraction, named ed Van liibber, a man of some note and distinction in those early times. Hin homestead stood below the Falls ; and opposite to it, on the other side of the river, was an overhanging rock of im mense size, jutting out about a hundred feet over the secthim: whirlpool camed by the Falls, and rising to nearly one hundred feet above the water. The rock was once thc scene of a remarkable ad venture, which exhibits what woman's love will give her courage to achieve for the defence and rescue of thofC to whom she is united in the tenderest bonds of affection. Van Bibber was one day returning from an expedition into the dense forest on the opposite side of the river to his home, when he unfortunately cros-ed the path of a party of Indians returning from some distant fray, ami dressed in the full glories of the warpath-paint, feathers mid wampun. A moment more, nnd they were in hot pursuit after him ; and thc settler, though possessed ol' great ability, and being a swift runner, lound himself unable to gain the bank of the river before tho Hying steps of thc sava ges hnd enabled them lo double on him. And cutting off all approach to the water, he was driven to thc summit of the over hanging rock, where, by the aid of his rifle, he kept the enemy for a few mo ments at bay. lie stood up bravely in full view of the savages both ubuve ami below, who yelled with triumph at the prospect of lisa speedy capture. Across the river before him lay his home ; and ns he looked, he H.IW his wife emerge from the house, startled by the noise, with her babe nestled in her arms. There is no indecision or weakness* in the steady, firm stroke of the oars w hich benia her rapidly on her dangerous courue, lier husband must be rescued, and lhere is no human arm bul hers to save him. Nerved by love to double exertion, the bravo woman hteadily nears the middle of the river. "Drop lower, wife." "Lower yet ;" and with the last words, Van liibber Hprung from the crag, and descended liku nu arrow into the water. Willi every pulse bealing wi div, the devoted wife rested on her oars to see him rise to the surface, while ber frail canon danced like a cork on top of the wirling waves. Ages scumed to pass in that awful suspense. Had the fall injur ed him? Had he struck tho boulders which lay, as she well knew, in multi tudes under the waler, curried down from the Falls above ? Would ho never rise? Uer eyes tried in vain to pene trate tho depths of tho water, and, tn nn agony, she swept the ennoo still further down the Htream. A moment more, and his bend rose suddeuly near her, and all ber mind was directed to helping him climb into tho shelter of the canoe, amid tho shower of arrows aud shot which the battled Indians poured upon their escaping foe. No word wos exchanged between them. Though her husband wns rescu ed, they had not yet reached the oppo site Bbore ; and the brave woman saw that, after tho perilous leap and the sudden immersion into tho cold water, Van Bibber was more dead than alive. IOverything depended on her Rtrength being maintained till she could attain the bank ; and with n heart wich nlmost Blood Btill for fear, tho devoted wife bent once more to the oars, with her whole powers of mind and body. And after their desperate adventure, thc exhausted husband and wife binded on the spot whence she had started on her perilous voyage, where the babe Btill lay, crowing and laughing, in the last rays of the afternoon sun. Two or three neighbors, who had boen gathered by the report of tho rifles, pull ed the canoe to the sands, nu? helped to lift Van Bibber to bis feet, lie could not walk, so they laid him on the green award by bia bube; and, falling down by hinside in her utter exhaustion and thankfulness, the over excited nerves of the woman found vent in a wild and uncontrolled flt of weeping. "Just what any other woman would haye done," nays some young reader, with a little air of aurprise and disdain. Exactly so, my dear.
