The Patriotic Widow of thc Cougaree. BY HENSON J LOSS IN'*, LL. i> I waa at Fort Motto Station, near llic Congarco Uiver, in South Carolina, on a bright frosty morning in January, 18-10. "Will you direct me to the Fo t Motto plantation," I said to a lad. Pointing up a geutle ?lope, lie ?aid : "On the top o' thc hill is Mr. Loves house, which they call Fort Motto. It is only a short walk from hero up that dirt road." At the summit I found n very aged man, with thin white hair, resting upon a log by the wayside. "Is that Fort Motte ?" I inquired, pointing toward a fine house for the re gion, standing on the high rolling plain which sloped to the swamps on every side. "So they call it," ho said ; but it ain't the lort we tuck from the Urilifh inore'll sixty year ago,-burnt 'cm out, you may say." "Were you one of its captors".'" I asked. "I reckon I was," replied thc old man. "D'ye see that scar'.'" pointing lo his fore arm bared of his sleeve. "A red coat's bullet made it in a scrimmage afore tho siego. I was Harry's leftcnunt. It was a nice house, but not so line as Mr. Lovc'n, which Becky built right away after the war. I helped draw timber to build it. They wsrs ordered to surrender. They said they wouldn't. Just then we beard that Rawdon was retreating from Cam den, and had Bent troopn to join the gar rison at Fort Motte. That very night their camp fires were seen on a hill not far away. The sight made UB lively, I tell ye. Something must be done quick ly. To batter down their works with our baby cannon, or reach them by digging trenches, would take too much time. But Lee waa up to anything. " 'We must burn 'em out,' ho said. "The shingles on the house were dry as tinder, for the sunshine was hot on that day at the middle of May. 'I can send tire to 'em with arrows,' said Lee, 'and they'll blase in a minute.' But he didn't like to do it. Becky Motte was his friend, ber son in-law waa bis friend; but he thought of his country first, and his friend afterwards. Turpentine torches were fastened to two or three of the arrows, and Nathan sent them like blazing Biara straight to the roof. The shingles smoked, and we hur rahed. They blazed, and we shouted. Becky Mott?, plucky Becky Motte, was as happy as any of us, though her fine house was in ruins. She invited the British officers, aa well as ours, to her farm-house to lunch ; ano, perfect lady as che waa everywhere, she was as purl ito to her co ti nt ry'a enemies as to its friends. "While- we were at the tab lo," continued the old soldier, "word came to our gineral that some of his men were 'nmuain' themselves by hanging Tories. .Marion hurried out, and, with his drawn sword, ran to the spot in time to save the life of ona of em. It was Tom Cunningham, who died at Kingstree last year. The gineral threatened to kill any man who should attempt to barm another 8riso ncr. Ills Heart on the Wrong Side. CINCINNATI, July 20-Dr. II. Il lo way of No. 2IO West Court street reports a peculiar freak of nature-if it is a freak of nature-in a patient, whoso heart, instead of beating on thc left side ?if ibo body, beats on the right side. This is something not unknown to medical sci ence. Dr. Illowa; was seen Friday by n reporter, to whom he said that be bad never before seen a man whose bea t was situnW'd as this man's was. His name is Joseph HorwitZ, and li ves on .lohn street, lie is a native of Poland and a peddler, 40 years old. The doctor bad examined thc man, endeavoring to ascertain wheth er the strange posit ?mi of tho heart was duo to disease or whether he WUH born that way. He. had not a-? yet detcrmiil ed. The man said that before coming to this country he was confined fora month in a hospital in Cracow, Poland, willi typhoid fever; thut while there the physicians bad observed the peculiarity in bim, and wanted bim lo go to Vienna for examination. He ?lid not go, however, coming to this country instead lie had never experienced any inconvenience from the position of bis heart, it per forming its functions as naturally as if in thc proper place, lie bad never been sick in any way that would lead bim to believe it was duo to his heart. Dr. (Downy said that the other organs of the man were apparently in a normal condition and proper place, and his heart wat* apparently in perfect order. There have been a few such cases reported heretofore in medical science, but they were in foreign countries. In this case the beating of tho heart is very distinct, in exactly thu same position on tho right side as it is usually on tho left side, so that it must ho completely changed from what it is in other persons.
