As you preach the Word, my dear
young brother, cast your eyes around
upon tho congregation nod you will ob
serve tho peoplo, ns follows, to wit,
namely, viz :
I. Tm: SLEEPER.-He will be there.
Peradventure bo icaneth his chin upon a
cano, so that when thc moment of ?Jeep
and profound slumber cometh upon him
his chin slippcth off, and with the bang
of bis bead upon the pew in front of him
he is awakened. Howbeit, tho bang
upon his wife's head no mau can hear.
Or, the slumberer may sit bolt upright
and nod in time to bis deep and regular
breathing. Only when you cast your
eyes upon him, the watchful wife of bis
bosom stabs him with her cibow, und ho
glareth upon tho congregation ns one
who should say : "Ho that saycth I
nlecp, the same is a liar aud n villain
and a horse thief." Or, if it bo so that
be leaneth his head back until tho lid
thereof falletb down between his shoul
ders, and he playcth fantastic tunes with
his nose, insomuch that the boys in tho
gallery make merry over tho same, then
is it hazardous to awaken this slumberer
right suddenly, because ho dreanicth of
divers things, and saycth to tho tithing?

ha! yes, yea, all right, i'm up." And
thus is thc congregation much scandal
ized. Dut if he fotdelh bis handkerchief
over me bnck of tho pew in front, and
bowetli his head devoutly upon tho ?arno
even in that moment when the text is
pronounced, then will that sleeper
trouble no one, but will slumber sweetly
on until the time of tho benediction ;
and bo will awaken refreshed and smil
ing, and bo will extol tho sermon and
magnify the preacher. He is tho old
timer from Sleepy Hollow.
II. THE LOUNGES.-He falls into the
pew and slides easily into tho most com
fortable corner. Ho shakes himself
down into a comfortable attitude. His
legs extend under the pew in front sud
meet his bin? &t the crookedest of obtuse
angles. He crooks his pliant elbow iuto
the srm of the pew ano drop* the side
or bia face into the fearful hollow of his
baud, by means of which ho pushes his
cheek up into his eyes. His shoulders
are nearly on a lovel with his head.
Every time you look at him you expect
to see him elido out of sight. And, al
though you aro a good man, sometimes
you wish he would, and never como up
again.
III. THE FIDGET.-Whether you look
for him or not you know wbero be ia.
He pushes the hassock away with along,
resonant groan of his own. Then bo
sits bolt upright, hooks his shoulder
blades over the back of the pew, and
hangs on. Ho is going to Hit still this
Sunday if it kills him. Dut the pew is
too high, so he settles down a little.
Then ho puts a hymn-book between his
bnck and tho pew. Then ho icana for
ward and lets it fall with a crash. Then
he folds bis arms ; he half turns and
lays ono arm along tho back of tho pow.
Suddenly he Blidea down and braces both
knees against tho back of tho pew in
front. Ah, that's comfort I It lasts
ninety seconds, when be abruptly
straightens up, elevates both arms and
hooks his elbows over tho back of the
pow. That isn't what be wants ; his
legs are tired ; he reaches for tho hassock
with both feet, upsets it, and, in a fran
tic effort to stop it, kickB it against the
pew. Covered with burning embarrass
ment, he pulls out his watch twice with
out looking at it. He folds his arms
across his breast, then he crosses them
behind his back ; he thruBte his hands
into his pockets, he drops a Bible on the
floor and puta bis feet into his hat, and
at times you look to, Bee him go all to
pieces, but he doesn't. He Btays together
and comes back next Sunday, every limb
and joint of him.
IV. TUE WATCHEB.-His neck is
fitted on o niobe socket and turns clear
around. He sees everything that goes
ou. The man who comes in late does
not escape him, and it IB vain for the
tenor to think be got that little note to
the alto conveyed between the leaves of
the hymn-book unobserved. The watch
er saw it. He sees the hole in the
quarter that Elder Skinner dropped in
the plate. He sees thai Deacon Slowboy
has cn but one cuff. If the door swings
ho looks around ; if the window moves
noiselessly he looks up. He sees the
stranger in bis neighbor's pew, and be
sees Brother Badman sitting away back
under the gallery^ furtively take a chew
of the inhibited ?ue-cut. Ali things
that nobody wanta him to seo the watcher
sees. He aees BO much that he hp.: no
time to to listen.
LAUNCHED INTO ETERNITY.
An Unusual and Terriblo Disaster on the
Clyde.
LONDOK, July 8-8 p. m.--Intelli
gence has lust reached this city of an
unusual ana terrible calamity during the
launch of s steamship at Glasgow to
day. The vessel to which the disaster
happened was the steamer Daphne.
While she waa being launched she fell
over on her aide, precipitating a number
of people into the wate.'. According to
dispatches thus far received sixty per
sons were drowned.
8:80 p. m.-Further particulars of the
calamity at Glasgow state that the
Daphne, whiuh was constructed for the
coasting trade, is a vessel of 600 tons
burden. Two hundred workmen were
on board of her when she capsized. The
accident occurred in the middle of the
River Clyde after the launching. It is
not exactly known bow many persons
were drowned, but it is feared that the
number of victims witl reach one hun
dred.
A later dispatch from' Glasgow says
that the Daphne capsized near Reu frew,
five miles from Glasgow. Trafile in the
Clyde is suspended owing to the inter
ruption to navigation by the capsized
vessel. The steamer left the ways at a
very fast rate and when she gained the
water she rolled from side to side. The
people on beard fearing that she would
capaba ran to and fro. The vessel
finally keeled over and nearly disap
peared beneath the water. The majority
of those on board were saved by tugs
and small boats, many of them In the
last stages of exhaustion. It is known
that there w?ro fifty persons below in the
Daphne when the veesel went ovsr and
thor moat have all been drowned.
Another dispatch from Glasgow says
that the cause of her capsizing was that
she bad too much top weight. Steamers
are dragging tho water for the bodies of
the victims.
Tho Daphm had all her machinery c-n
board. She turned upside down before
she sank. Accounts of the number of
persons on board and the number lost
continuo to vary widely. Several bodies \
have been found'nt tho foot of tho way.-?.
Divers aro searching for other bodies.
LATER.-Fifty-two names aro publish
ed as those of miming persons. As visi
tors were admitted to view tho launch it
ia believed that some of them, whose
named are at present un known, aro among
the missing. Many dead bodies aro visi
ble through ibo portholes of the ship.
There waa a rapid ebb tide, and it is
feared that many bodies were carried to
sea. Thoro was ft large number of boys
on board. Foreman Joiner, who bad
charge af twenty workmen, says he. bas <

caught by the strong current of the river
by which, as well as by her top weight,
she was caused to keel over BO far that
the water entered her porta. A diver
states that tho compamou way of tbe
Daphne is blocked up by a solid mass of
bodies ono upon another. It appears
that tho men who were at work below
when the ship went over rushed from
their work and became jammed in thc
passageway. Hone of the bodies still
have tools in their bands. The diver
thinks Ibero uro still in thc vessel at
least ns many corpses us liavo already
been recovered. Forty-one bodies bad
been found last night, when darkness
stopped the search.

have come over the many good people
who were present and witnessed the most
wonderful und miraculous escape that
ever happened in this or any other coun
try. Mrs. liebert Elliott, of Texas, ibas
been here for tho past ten days or more,
to restore the health of ber child, Birdie,
a bright and sweet little cherub less than
three years old, who is much emaciated
from aspell ol Texas fever. This morn
ing about 10 o'clock a strolling Italian
made his appearance in front of thc hotel,
with a largo cluster of those red bladder*
liko toy Balloons. Major Hawkins, of
Alabama, to amuse little Birdie, who he
nt that timo had in his arms, tied the
cord around her waist and then, BB is so
often dono to amuse children, gave her n
loss of (ive or six feet into the air and
held out his bands for ber return.
"Great God ! she is gone," cried thc Ma
jor, BS ho saw her rapidly going up, up,
up, until she had (Hissed tho house-tops.
Floating in the clouds, with outstretched
hands, tho little angel could be heard
distinctly calling : "Mamma, mamma,
mamma," until her voico became drown
ed by toe whistling of the winds. All
the men at the boto! ?tarted out in boats,
for the little ono wns drifting to sea.
By an act of Divino 1'rovidence Mr.
Charles J. VoorheeB, of thc Southern
Express Company, with a party of gentle
men were out taking a sail. Mr. Voor
bees ?B ono of tho most expert riflemen
in the country, nnd ns God had ordained
it he had on board his .Smith ?1- Wesson
ri flo. Ho at onco took in tho situation,
icmarking: "Six miles out nt sen and
going at the rate of ten miles an hour,
and now 400 yards high mid every min
ute going higher, higher, higher. I cnn
cut those balloons, and will do it or die."
"Bangl" went the rifle-but no
chango in position. Again, again and
again-tho fifth eliot ono balloon disap
peared amidst tho shouts of the boatmen.
At the eighth shot it become evideut

sho was gradually descending, not in a
straight line but in a southeast direction,
towards.Harker's Island-but whether
dead or alive nono could tell. Down,
down, down she comes-as gentle as if
handled by human hands-and to full
in a cradle of sand. With fear and trem
bling all ran up-Ben Piver in front.
"Gentlcmon," Bays he, "I will be dinged
if she ain't live and kicking." There
sat little Birdie playing with a lot of
sholls, and as sho was picked up she clung
on to a handful, saying, "I)c*c tele for
mamma."
With tho prize nil returned to the
boats. There sat Mr. Yoorhees with a
death-like paMor on his countenance,
and when told that he bad saved tbe
babe unhurt, l ia lender heart gave way
and he wept like a child. The little
darling came out as blight as a new pin
and seemed tc look on tho whole matter
as fun gotten up for her amusement.
Thus ended a day of the most intense
excitement that the oldest inhabitant at
this old North Carolina resort ever
dreamed or thought of, and may the
writer never again witness its like.

The Chances in Ohio.
WASHINGTON, July 2.-A Now York
lawyer, a Republican, who lived for
many years in Ohio, and who?e relations

ent yesterday that the situation was, in
bin opinion, getting interesting. "If the
Democrats don't carry Ohio next full
and the country next year, he said, it
will not be because they haven't worked."

ocrat is to be elected I would as Boon see
him get it as anybody. Yet, while ho is
an nhl J man, he is erratic, and it would
not surprise mo to seo him do something

br his defeat. I see that he ia to begin
speech-making at once. Thia is bad
policy. If his managers understood
their man they would keep him off the

"Foraker is a good man, but without
the age and experience that Hoadly bas.
I think that, nevertheless, he will make
a good campaign, and will win, if any
man can."
"Is Hoadly a Presidential candidate?"
"I said several years ago that Hoad'y
waB likely to be the nominee of the
Democratic party, and I don't see any
reason to change my mind. By George,
sir, if Hoadly carries Ohio thia fall, I
don't believe anything can prevent his
being the candidate of the Democratic
party for President next year."
"But don't Tilden wanrt it ?"
"I think that Tilden will be convinced,
if be is not already, that he will do bet
ter to stand just where he is. I believe
that his true friends think that hs will
live longer in history as the man who
preferred losing the office to rejecting
the decision of the legally authorized
tribunal, and will so advise him."

"If elected this fall, will pretty surely
bo the nominee of the party next year."

In tbe life of Theodore Parker a very
beautiful incident one day occurred. It
was before he was known to fame. He
was only a teacher then, in Watertown, I
think. He had among his scholars a
little witch of a boy, whom no reproof
and no persuasion could induce to keep
himsrlf in order.
O'.e day, after bis more than usually
troublesome conduct, Mr. Parker requir
ed the little fellow to stay after school to
be whipped. Bo the lime had come for
this resource of the exhaased patience
and skll? of the teacher. According to
directions the little fellow held out his
band for punishment, and as he took It,
Mr. Parker said he looked down into the
little face, and the boy looked so much
like bis little sister, whose conduct was
all right, and who had won Mr. Parker's
love, he stayed the rod and stooped down
and kissed the innocent lips , that were
ready to break forth leta crying and sent

that Hop Ritters was the purest, best and
