TUE SURRENDER OF LEE.

ID the meantime General Lee came
over to McLean's house in tho village of
Appomattox Court House. I am not
certaiu whether General Babcock, of
General Grant's stall, who had arrived
iu advance of the General, bad gone
over to see him or not. We lind waited
some hours, and, I think, about 12 or 1
o'cl?ck General Grant arrived. General
Ord, myself and many officers were in
tho main road leading through the town
at a poiut where Lee's army was visible.
General Grant rode up and greeted me
with, "Sheridan, how are you /" I replied,
"I am very well, thank you." He then
said, "Where is Lee?" I replied, "There
is his army down in that valley ; he is
over in that house (pointing out Mc?
Lean's) waiting to surrender to you."
General Grnut, still without dismounting,
said, "Come, let us go over." He then
made the same request to General Grd,
and wc all went to McLean's house.
Those who entered with General Grant
were, as nearly as I can recollect, Ord,
Rawlins, Beth Williams, [ngalla, Bab
cock, Parker and myself ; the stall'
officers, or those who accompanied, re
maining outside on the porch steps and
in the yard. On entering the parlor we
found General Lee standing iu company
with Colonel Marshall, his aide-de-camp.
The first greeting was to General Seth
Williams, who bad been Lee's Adjutant
when ho was Superintendent of the
Military Academy. General Lee was
then presented to General (irani, and all
present were introduced. General Leo
was dressed in a new gray uniform,
evidently put on for the occasion, and
wore a handsome sword. He had on his
face Ute expression of relief from a heavy
burden. General Grant's uniform was
soiled with mud and service, and bo
wore no sword. Aftern few words had
been spoken by those who knew General
Lee, ail the officers retired except, per
haps, one r.tal!' ^flicer of General Grant's
and the one yvho was with Gan. Lee.
We had not been absent from tho room
longer than fivo minutes when General
Babcock came to tho door and Bald, 'Tho
surrender bas taken place-you eau come
in again.' When we re-entered General
Grant was writing on a little wooden,
elliptical-shaped table (purchased by me
from Mr. McLean aud presented to Mrs.
G. A. Custer) the conditions of the sur
render. General Lee was sitting, his
hand resting on Ibe hilt of his sword, to
tho left of General Grant, with Iiis back
to a small marble-topped table, on which
many books were piled. * ? * About
ono nour was occupied in drawing up and
signing tho terms, when General Lee
retired from the house with a cordial
Bhake of tho hand with General Graut,
mounted his chunky, gray horse, and
lifting his hat, passed through tho gate,
and rode over tue crest of the hill to his
army. On his arrival there, we beard
wilt! cheering, which seemed to bc taken
up progressively by bis troops, cither foi
him, or bec iuse of satisfaction with hie

as a Louisana cotton planter appeared ir
the Washington Sunday Herald:
I do not know why the writers wh<
undertake to give accurate accounts o
the various ?pisodes in tho life ant
career of the Hon. J. Whitelaw Roit
always omit a moBt interesting part, viz
bin life as a Southern planter. No!
many people seem to know that Mr
Reid was once a cotton planter, ant
managed large estates successfully too
I am able to supply the hiatus in bi<
history. In 1866 Whitelaw Reid une
Maj. Gen. J. J. Herron, of Iowa, enteret
into partnership for the purpose o
growing cotton in tbe parish of Concor
din, in the State of Louisen*. Tbe]
leased three great plantations almosi
opposite Natchez, Miss., belonging to G
B. Shields, of that city. The countrj
was full of Northern men who cann
South to show Southern planters bow ti
grow cotton with free labor. J nat abo vi
Reid and Herron Frank V. Blair had at
immense estate, tho Wynn Forest Plan
talion, which in 18G1 bad produced 180(
bales of cotton and 45,00 barrels of corn
and on tbe other (Mississippi) Bide of th<
river Gen. Andrews, of Massachusetts
now Professor of French ot West Point
had an equally large estate. Just above
Frank Blair tho groat house of Hoyt,
Spraguo & Co., of New York, bad fiv?
enormous places belonging to the Mor
gan estate. The plantations held by
Reid and Herron had each about 150(1
acres of fine arable land. Tho Freed
man's Bureau at Natchez supplied them
with an abundance of labor. On the
first day of July, 1866, their crop was in
splendid condition, and looked as though
it were good for 2,000 bales, to Bay
nothing of the immense fields of corn,
almost 2.000 acres more. They could
have readily sold their cotton crop as it
then Btood for $250,000. On July 10 there
was not 50 acres of cotton standing.
Tho dreaded cotton worm had come
and devoured the young crop almost in a
night.
The next year these gentlemen doter
nr ned to try again, but the entire country
was overflowed, and the Mississippi
Iii vcr at Natchez was 70 miles wide.
Tbe water was so leng iu falling that a
very small crop was made, and t ho third
year found nearly everybody ruined, and
the firm of Reid Sc Herron ceased to
exist.
In 1866, in coming down the river on
the noted steamer, Robert ?. Lee, from
bia plantation in Washington county,
Mississippi, Genoral Hampton very much
astonished Mx. Reid by avowing himself
to bo in favor of negro suffrage.
Gen. Hampton said that while be might
doubt either the wisdom or the expedi
ency of the law which made them
citizens, yet it was the law, and if ne
groes were citizens they were certainly
voters, as the right of suffrage was the
first right of a citizen. I r imember
hearing of a funny circumstanre which
occurred on this trip. Gen. Hampton
had with him an old and favorite body
* servant, who had been iu the Hampton
family for a great many years. A gen
