On lust Friday and Saturday evenings

appreciative audiences. Those who were 1
hot present missed a literary treat. Kach ,
of his lectures consumed about two hours, |
though to the listener the time seemed only 1
a few minutes. The Doctor's fame as an j
orator, we think, is not exaggerated. His i
gestures are graceful and natural, and his :
enunciation clear and distinct. Dr. Mil

The Skating Carnival at VanWyck's hall j
ni last Thursday evening attracted a large
rowd. Indeed, the crowd was so large *
hat the skaters hardly had room to go
brough the programme. A number of t
ikators from Pendleton, by invitation, were $
>rescut. Some of the costumes of the .
ikaters were quite unique and fancy. The
?ntertainment opened with the tournament d
?outest. T'-. first prize wa;- awarded to
Miss Heler Keys, and the second prize to
Miss Kitty White, they having secured thc a
;reatest number of rings. The jumping
:ontest, which was probably the most didi- c
?ult feat of the entertainment, was next t
>n the programme. Mr. Ham. Osborne s
?vas tho successful competitor. Next
n order came tho race, in which a number [
jr competitors entered. The prize was j
iwardcd to Mr. George Evan?. The last
ind most amusing feature of the pro- {
.roimnc was the contest between the most
twkward skaters. There were also quito a ?
number of competitors in this contest, and t
?rom our own observation it was right di iii- ^
mit to decide who was entitled to thc prize,
rho committee, however, gave thc first t
prize to Mr. W. D. Maroney, and the sec
nid prize to Mr. Foster Fant. After the pro- J
gramme had been rendered the audience t
?eercased. Thc fancy skating then com- ?
nenced in earnest, and was indulged in 6
jiitil a late hour. The entertainment was
> success in every particular, and highly f
jnjoyed by all present. ^

.'II last Saturday nftet'ii<>on the reporter
for thc I.NTKi.i.iuKNCKlt, in company with
our young friend, George N. Urey h .-, left
the city to visit tho hospitable home of his
mother, Mrs. M. A. Uroyle*, whorc-idesin
Fork township. We had often heard 'lu1
Folk township alluded to as the banner
township of the County, but never having
visited that section we could not know as
to the correctness of this claim. So we
availed ourselves of this opportunity to
visit the Fork. We arrived at the home of
our young friend about dark, and, after
I ?art ak ir. g of a bountiful supper, retired
with pleasant anticipations of thc morrow.
Sunday morning dawned bright and
clear. This being the regular day tor
preaching at Smith's Chapel, a Methodist
Church, which is only a short distance
from Mrs. Bioyhs, we went (herc to wor
ship. Kev. J. T. Knghiud, the pastor in
charm', preached. A Sunday .School has
recently been organized here, and is in a
nourishing condition. The School i.- Su
perintended hy Mr. 1). Sloan While, with
Mr. J. C. lian lt a.- Secretary, loder the
leadership of such gentlemen, assisted by
zealous teachers, the School will no doubt
continue to flourish, anti fm the means of
accomplishing much good among the youth
of that section. Thc Creen vii!? Dintrict
Conference meets with th?3 Church during
the month of August, and the people are
looking forward to il with much pleasure.
A more hospitable section, we venturi',
could not have been selected for holding
the t lon Terence.
In the afternoon we accompanied Mr.
Broyles over the farm, w hich is managed
this year hy his younger brother, Mr. Jas.
Broyles. Judging from the condition and
appearance of the crops, we were not long
in forming the opinion that our young
friend understands his occupation thor
oughly. He is about through harvesting a
lino wheat and oat crop. We also visited
several other farms ?II the immediate neigh
borhood. Sonip of the best farmers of the
County reside in this section.
The crops in the Fork have not sn (Te red a
day from drought. In fact, the crops all
along the road leading to Townville seem
to have had au abundance ol' rain. That
whole section of the County has a very
promising prospect for a bountiful crop
yield. On every hide we notice evidence*
of prosperity and progressiveness. Tin
people are hospitable, sociable and accom
modating. From what we saw of tim
township we are of thu opinion that bri
people have good grounds for claiming t<
he the banner township of the County.
Mr. Uroyles' home is a most charmin}!
and beautiful place, which no one can visil
without spending a very agreeable and in
teresting time. We returned home on
Monday morning, feeling considerably re
freshed and invigorated by our trip.
