Koniarkable Exposition of Masonic
Mysteries.
ny A. couii, .?it.
1 rom east to went, mid between north
and Bouth, Free-Masonry extends; and
in every clinic are Masons lo be found.
This institution issa'd to be supported
by? Wisdom, Strength, nd Iii a ?ty ; lie
cause it is necessary that there should be
wisdom to contrive, strength to support,
and beauty to adorn, all great and impor
tant undertakings.
Its covering is no less than a clouded
canopy, or a starry-decked heaven, where
all good Masons hope at Inst lo arrive, by
the aid ol' thc theological ladder which
.Jacob, in his vision, saw ascending from
carib to heaven; tho three principal
rounds bf which arc demonstrated Faith,
Hope and Charily : and which udmoti
ish us to have faith in God, hope in im
mortality, and charity to all mankind.
The greatest ol these is charily ; for
our faitli may be lost in sight ; hope
ends in fruition; but charity extends
beyond the grave, through tile boundless
realms of eternity.
I flatter myself I HI? IV something
{?bout secret societies, i have had a
passion for that sorl of thing ever since I
was old enough to tell lies, i have
scouted around pretty extensively among
the differeul organizations. I have been
a Fenian and an Orangeman, and a Good
Templar, and a Son ot Malta, and also a
Counterfeiter. I have belonged to the
Sons of Temperance, and the Odd Fel
lows, and the Hand ol' JJope, the Young
Men's Christian Association and a band
oi robbers. I have been in everythiug,
and I thought i knew every thing, almost,
but I did not. One. ?lay about three
months ago I was speaking lo a friend in
relation to thc Masons, when he gave i; i
ii full explanation concerning them, nod
I became erjiatunted with Masonry, and
concluded to try it loo ; nnd since I join
ed that organization ? have discovered
that there are several things connected
therewith that outsiders don't know just
a pretty good deal about. Now, I pro
pose making these secrets public, not out
of compassion for my fellow men who
may be tending towards Masonry, and
act as a warning, aud HO on, because I
have not gotn spark of human kindness,
in my breast, and would rather seo every
mother's son put to thc torture than not,
because 1 have a spite against the fellow
who initiated me, wiio made tho irons
too hot when he we. t to brand mo aud
tho goat too frisky r hen I went to ride
him, and treated mo with n roughness
generally that tho occasion did not war
rant.
Before fulminating my narrative I will
state for the i n form r t ion of those who dou't
know, that Masonry is about six hundred
thousand years old. it was old whou
the fraternity got into trouble at the
tower of Hihel, and it was old when
Adam first put on his uprou ns Grand
Muster of Kdcn Lodge. As a more con
vincing truth ns to ils antiquity, I would
just mention that u part of miners, tho
other day, in one of their excavations,
came upon tho petrified remains of u
Masonic Lodge, with tho members in
their places aud all complete ; and emi
nent geologists who havo examined tho
fossils aro of the opinion that these bod
ies havo been embedded in the rock for
moro than fifteen thousand years.
On thc evening I was to bo initiated I
made my will thinking I would neverngain
?ce li. nab and the children, mid took a
most affecting leave of my family. Thus
prepared, I sturted for the Lodge, nccom
fanied by brother John Smith, S. lt. 8.
\ T., who was to seo mo through. We
arrived at the dour and hnd no dilhculty
in getting through the first, entrance ; but
ntthe second when we knocked a flat
little fellow looked out through a small
round hole in the door, ana put this
startling interrogatory to Uro. Hm i th :
Chetuxchronhighcockalorum ? to which
Brother Smith replied, cheerfully, ns ho
understood the ropes: Nixmydolly
whac do. Tho little fellow then said :
Flod zest compbrilidy umtrum ; and my
conductor giving a satisfactory answer,
wo wore then permitted to enter. Before
I bad time to look around me to locate
things, a lean, slab-sided, long-legged
fellow came up to me and knocked me
over on the floor with a club ; he then got
on rae aud stood on my feot, and another
savage looking marauder mnde a rush at
me as 1 attempted to rise up, and ho
brought mo down to thc floor again. I
now begun to feel for my six shooter to
defend myself, but I hud unfortunately
left it at home. After being overpower
ed and had uudergone this exhilarating
exercise for about fivo minutes, they
stretched me out on n bench and exam
ined my teeth, pinched all my muscles,
and stuck pius into me all over, and put
cayenne popper up my nostrils, ?nd
poured raoulten lead up my trowsers'
pockets, and pulled hair out of the back
of my neck with red hot pincers, with a
view, I suppose, to make mo feel unem
barrassed and at home. But now, you
must anticipate the balance.
* * * * * *
When I came to my senses I was alone
in the ante room of thc Lodge. It was o
lively and cheerfully apartment. A
couple of crockodiles were amusing
themselves in a corner, and a few full
grown rattlesnakes were practicing the
Hying trapeze on a stove-pipe. The fur
niture consisted chiefly of half a dozen
mummies, the skclotons nf Capt. Kidd,
Lucretia Borgia, Guy Fawha, Jack the
Giant Killer, Oliver Cromwell, the Wan
dering Jew, William the Conqueror,
Christopher Columbus, and Dick Tur
pin ; a flying machine, three barrels of
gunnower, and a healthy and well devel
oped wild cat. Just then half a dozen
pirates, all clad in aprons and sashes,
rushed into tho room with an outlandish
whoop. One of them the biggest and
ugliest, who appeared to be tho chief,
ordered the attendants, in a voice of
thunder, to trot out the animal. The
attendants disappeared, but immediately
reappeared leading an iron clad goat, a
regular double decker, with sixteen horns,
n pair of wings, and seven or eight tails
stuck all over him. My eyes were then
bandaged and 1 waa told to mount. I
aaid, "Gentlemen, if you will excuse me,
I would rather not, as I am not in the
habit of riding fiery animals, and I am
not accustomed to going up in a balloon ;
and besides I have got an engagement
down town. My wife wanta to see me
particularly; I will be back in a few
minutes. I rather think my house is on
fire, but I will be back in a few minutes
-yes. upon honor, gentlemen, in a few"
-Before I could finish my sentence I was
siezed and planted firmly astride the in
fernal goat.. Somebody then said, "Let
fa," and nu rc enough awav be went, and
etickittgto him like a leach to a raw
hide. I havo been through a great many
perilous ababos ; I bavo taken part in an
electiofc fight; I hare been down in a
railway collision, and np in a steamboat
explosion ; . I have fallen down three
flight? of stairs, and walked sut of a
thrco-story window, but this goat oxcur
aion beat them all. When I come to re
flect in cold blood, I wonder that lever
came out alive. The furious beast kick
ed, and bleated, and rolled over, and
turned back and front somersaults, which
finally caused gue to let go my grip, and
tho anima! at once drove me against tho
ceiling atid.iunderneath the chair?, nt
which time tho bandage fell from roy
eyes, an*; theie1 saw sights too fearful to
describa. . Tho goat vanished up tho
chimney i inclue flame, and I found
.nyeolf in thc center of tho Lodge room,
with*} mut fifty Masons in aprons, abd
.alogina,- soiling Uko "Old Hundred,"
and some- of them every now and then
would say,'jam?te ft be." The reit
of the members were standing on their
heads in tb'e^fler^nt corners, all but tha
cadaverous looking buccaneer, who ap
peared to fcc the bead of the department
Soon they left off dancing, and march
ing around (lie room chanting au inspir- 1
ing dirge. I was then hauled up in front
of the Chief's desk, who thus addressed i
mc: "Hro. Kobb, you ore now one of
us. You arc a member of an institution
that has lasted over three million years.
You aro impervious to mundano influ
ences. You are water-proof and fire
proof and you are over proof. You can
walk through tli<* ri vcr and sit ou a red
hot stove with impunity. Mortal man
cannot harm you, ami the devil himself
mutt curl up lu* tail and walk oil' at
your approach. He virtuous, temperate
and honest, Mr. (Cobb, and you will lite
and die a happy mau."
I then assumed a sash and apron, and
was duly declared a Mason.
Training Schools of Cookery.
Mrs. Kinma I'. Dwi og, Superintendent
of the Chicago -'..lining .School of Cook
ery, writes us that the retient agitation ol
culinary subjects hy the C/ironir/e lias
attracted attention at the West and Kast.
She says :
I'erm it me to tell you that most ol thc
cooks in all sections of the country are
in thc same condition as those in the
South, and thal "a practical branch of
cookery" is a ritnt neccMiOj of </// schools.
Firmly ?inpressed with tin; importance of
this subject. I am preparing a series of
fookery manuals adapted to the uso of
.chools, and suitable for home instruc
tion, and hope in the course of limo lo
?ec them introduced i tito every i:chool
room and kitchen in the ?and. Two of
them have already been published, and I
-hall get out two more- liri" on "Salads"
iud one on "lilllie Dishes"-before I go
to Chautauqua, where I am eugaged to
rive lectures and lessons for six weeks in
July and August-and others will be
published as rapidly as I can find time
o prepare them, until I have gone over
he whole culinary field. I sm also pre
?aring H lee? ure on "Cookery in
.chools," which ? trust I shall gel leis
ire, from other labors, to deliver ricca*
ional ly during the coming winter.
Two ol Mrs. H wing's pamphlets on
Ircad and Soup Making have reached
is, and appear to be valuable to house
miders aud can bo obtained, for Ho cent?
;aoh, by application to the uuthor at WM
.'ulton street, Chicago. The best people
d the East and West aro patronizing
his system of instruction ana iiilroduc*
rig it as n conspicuous brandi in tho
mblic and private schools. Tho South
ms urgent need of the Hamo curriculum.
Ye know for.certain that the Chronicle's
imitation of this subject lias literally
'gono homo" to many families, and that
ho desire for reform is almost unnui
nous. A recent writer states as an in
toulcstablo fact that the prevailing dis
'ii*c of the present century is dyspepsia
ir indigestion, and the watering places of
bc country reap rich harvests of ducats
rom that class of Americans who,
kllhotigh ranked among tho intellectual,
ire noted among connoisseurs us not hav
ng sufficient intelligence to know how
o cat properly. He adds that hundreds
if thousands of dollnrs aro expended an
malty ut summer resorts by wealthy
Vinericans in their effort to patch up or
cpair a worn out or exhausted stomach,
nade from a lack of tho simplest knowl
;dge of gastronomy. No wonder then
lint the French, who aro better versed
n t!ie art of cooking than any nation on
ho globe, should, iu speaking of Anton
inus, says: "The good Lord lion sent you
he best of food in plenty, but tbe Devil
ms, in most cases, sent cooks to dress it
md fouls to cut it."
How to co-operato with the Lord in
.his matter and how to exercise the de
non of tho kitchen who is making tho
itomach more of a "diabolical appnrn
us" than it need bp, is a matter of HU
?remo interest. We trust the School
Jo m miss io ii em may gradually bo led to
icc it in that light.
A Maine Ulrl.
In thc plantation of Oakland, A roos
uok county, Maine, there is a girl who
lossesses tho faculty of spelling difficult
vorda backward without hesitation. Her
mme is Hattie M. Drew ; ?he is just past
1er 12th birthday, and resides with her
mronts, who uro people of moderato edu
ction, living upon a farm. While this
itt le girl in bright and ?mart ns tho av
erage of her mate", sha never attracted
my particular attention until, n little
nore than a year ago, it was accidentally
Uncovered that she possessed the singu
ar gift of spelling any word with which
ibo was acquainted backward and with*
nit hesitation. At a spelling match
ccenlly held in tho Behool which she
ittends, without any warning, slio stood
>efore tho audience for Borne ten min
non, spelling words selected ut random,
onie for their difficulty of combination,
mt without any previous knowledge of
vhat they were to he, rapidly and" dir
ectly, except one or two which she could
mt spell in tho proper way, aud when
iromptcd in the correct spelling would
mracdiately reverse it. Among the
rorda which she spelled were these :
j?laxy, sysygy, astronomy, robin, pho
tography, difficulty, attendance, indivisi
?illly, etc., Bud many other words of
iqual length and difficulty. All of these
vere applied as rapidly ns the eye could
niloc-, without a single misplacement of
i letter. Has any other person without
.ny training been nble to do this or siin
lar feats? In addition, it may be suit!,
tpon the testimony of the girl, that "she
:an see the words in her mind, and
cnows no reason why she should not
cad thc letters backward as is usual
?ay."

How Ut Take Screws Ont of Wood.
_ j
One nf tho most simple and readiest
methods tor loosening a rusted screw ii
to apply heat to (be head of the screw.
A small har or rod of Iron, flat at the
end, If reddened in the fire and applied
for a couple or three minutes to the head
of the rusted screw, will as soon as it
heats the screw, render its withdrawal tis
easy hy the ..crew driver a* if it was only
a recently inserted screw. As llo re i? a
kitchen poker in every house, that in
strument, if healed al its extremity, and
applied for a few minutes to the screw or
-crew?, will ?hi the required work of
loosening, and nu ordinary screw driver
will du the rest, without causing the
least damage, trouble or vexation ol
spiril. In ali work above (he common
kind, where it is necessary to use screws,
and particularly in hinge work and
mountings, fancy fastenings and appli
ances ulli xcd to joinery ol furniture work,
we would advise the oiling of screws or
<lipping their points in grease before
driving them. This will render them
more ca-y to drive, and also to withdraw,
??nd it will undoubtedly retard for a longer
lime the action of rusting.
Pride That Had a Fall.
Those persona who enjoy seeing a
haughty spirit suffer a fall should have
been on board one of the sleeping cars
attached to u through train from Chica*
go to Boston a fliort lime ?go. Among
its passengers were a middle-aged man
and woman from the remote West, who
hud evidently come upon sudden riches
and were devoting all their energies to
advertising thc fact. They were gorge
ously dressed ; the woman sported any
quantity of diamonds and no occasion for
informing the other passengers of the
wealth and position of their family was
suffered to pass unimproved. They had
with them a plug of a boy about fourteen
years old. One morning after the pa
rents had dressed themselves they dis
covered that their hopeful son was still
slumbering ami the mother sat to work to
arouse him. Repeated calls failing to
have any eliect, sho finally had recourse
to thump-i and digB in his ribs, where
upon the boy evidently dreaming that ho
was at home and being stirred up to per
form some accustomed duty, bawled out :
' You let me alone and go feed the hogs
yourself!" A joyous smile enlivened tho
features of thc rest of the travelers.

Kat lug Lemons.
A good deal has been said through
the papers about the healthfulness of
lemons. Tho latest advice as to how to
uso them HO us they will do the most
ir,ood runs as follows: Most people know
the benefit of lemonade before breakfast,
but few know how it is moro then dou
bled by taking another al night also.
The way to get tho belter of a bilious
system w ithout tho use of pills or quinine
is to take the juice of one, two or three
lemons, ns the appetite craves, in aa
much icc water as makes it pleasant to
drink, without BUgar, before going to
bed. In tho morning on rising, or at
least half an hour before breakfast, take
tho juice of ono lemon in n goblet of
water. This will clear the system of
humors and bile, with mild efficacy,
without any of tho weakening effects of
calomel or Congress water. People
should not irritate the stomach by eat
ing lemons clear; the powerful acid of
the juice, which is almost corrosive, infal
libly produces inflammation after awhile,
but diluted, so that it does not burn or
draw the throat, it does its full medicinal
work without barm, when the stomach is
clear of fond, bas abundant opportunity
to work on the system thoroughly.
