relate? with great glee how a neighbor ol
his was cured of too frequently tippling
the gin bottle. This neighbor manied a
young, handsome and spirited lady, and
for a month or two all went well ii thc
house and about the farm ; then thc hus
band fell back into his old truck. The
wife remonstrated, and for n time thc
husband reformed. Presently, however,
she became satisfied that the "bottle tip
pling" was going on. When she spoke
to her husband about tho matter he
swore that thc "aroma" she detected was
that of a colic medicine he was laking,
be having developed a most i nt rac table
colic, for the relief of which he had
brought home and paraded a bottle of
medicine.
The wife was confident that lhere v.as
kept somewhere about tho premises a
considerable store of a very di li?rent
kind of medicine. Sho kept her own
counsel, and at the same time st'.ict
watch. In n day or two she discovered
under a mauger in the barn thu secret
hoard. .She said nothing of the discov
ery to lier husband.
Soon after the husband had business :;t
a neighbor's some two miles away. On
his return lie was somewhat surprised at
seeing c. note pinned on the front door.
He hastily advanced and read as follows ?

tho house of bis father-in-law, and ho
was determined to overtake his wifo
before she could reach it or kill a horse
in tho attempt.
Said the butter man: "i'trw, I see'd

Kitty, and begin to perform some queer
abolutions. After she'd got over tho
brow of the hill shu paced up and down
tho road for a time ; then she rid up and
looked over the ridge for a while. After

went up to the brow of thc hill again.
So she kept doing, and once or twice
she got off and led Kitty up to ibo lop of

Ben a comin'over the pitch of tho hill
on his big black boss, like a wild Co
manchee. He was ridin' with loose

his big spurs into his boss like he'd rip

".'He passed by with hair and coattails
sailin' back in thc wind, and never
turnin' his head to right or left. I tell
you, a million thoughts webt through ?wy
brain in n second. AU the stories I'd
ever heard about jealous husbands and
insane husbands went through my brain
in a lump, and I do believe, if i'd had
my gun in my hand, I'd hnve taken a
wing shot at him on suspicion.

Ben was coin' like tho wind. I knowe ti
Nell waa beaded for her father's and I
see'd plain as day that Ben would get
her 'fore she was safe landed.
"At last ho waa upon her. It wns
then neck and neck for a time, with Ben
rcachin'out for Kitty's bridle. At last
he got'it, and tho two .horses gradually
slowed up till they finally stopped. I
mounted my gat..-post all of a tremble,
expectin' to seo something happen.
"Ther stopped Jn the rcad'talkin' nigh
unto half Su hom-, then I saw Ben lean
over and Nell lean over till their two
heads come together.
"What, that mischief!" Bays I, "kiss
in' instead of killin. Well, that sort o'

in' the pair turned about and came
slowly joggin' along back.
"Aa they passed me I called out to
Ben to know what in the living jingo it
all meant. Ben began to stammer some
thing, 'bout half of which never got out
through his big beard. When Nellie
sings out to me, "only a raco for a kiss !"
and givin' Kitty a cut that made her
bound ten feet, she called out to Ben :
"Come on ! A race to tho top of the
bill for another !" and away they both
went.
"That was five years ago. and I never
knowed the meaning of that wild, ha
rumscarum ride till 'bout tbreo months
ego. when the story 'bout the "colic
medicine" leaked out among tho wimmen
folks. Por a" good time after the ride,

a glass of Oregon cider.
"To this day no doubt Ben thinks he
had a desperate chase after Nell, and a

home den 'long with her big brother, her
father and hit mother-in-law ; and I've

foolod 'long under tho brow of the bill."

A Hulloing Five Feet Wilie.
Nr.vy Yo UK, March 28.- Thc narrow
cut house in this ??ty may he ween at the
north west corner of Lexington avenue
nnd Highly-second street. When Lex
ington avenue was cut through, some
years ago, a strip of land five feet wide
ami one hundred feet deep was all that
was left of a certain lot hclougiug to a
person who did not own the next lot rm
the strict. The strip, while of little
value by itself, would be valuable lo the
person owning thc adjoining lot on
Highly eccond street, because it would
not only enable him to build a house five
feet wider, but would give Ililli windows
ult along thu side of hi* hou-e on Lex
ington avenue, The two owners, how
ever, cou id not agree as lo leriiis, and a
house was creeled on lin lot adjoining
thc narrow -trip. The owner of thc lat
ter had nothing lo do but to abandon his
lot or lo build a house five feet wide
upon il. The latter course w as perhaps
adopted because such a hou-e would shut !
np all the cide windows of the neighbor-'
i tig building and considerably reduce i's
value.
Thc new building, which lias been
finished for ?onie months, is therefore
live feel wide, one hundred feet deep ?.rid
four stories high, lt is divided into two
houses, each fifty bet lone, and the en
trance doors are ul course on (he avenue,
a-> lhere is no room fora door at either
em) of (he building. The law allows n
building ul the corner of a street to have '.
projecting bay windows along tho side, j
and taking advantage ot this ein um I
stance, ihe architect has managed lp
[linn a house, which while peculiar in
inside appearance and probably very Un
comfortable to live in, may lind tenants.
Without these bay windows or square
projections running I rom thc foundation j
(O the . ?ol. it would not have been pos
sible to build a house al all, for no room
would liavo been willer limn three feet,
lynch house has, therefore, two bay win
dows, in ono of which are the stairs and
in the oilier one room about eight feet
wide by fifteen feet bing, upon each floor.
The bing passage between the stair-well
ami thc room is about three feel wide.
Hitch house contains a kitchen eight by
li I teen feet and lour rooms, each of the
same size, but on different floors. There
are also ingeniounly-pluccd closets at
each end of the building and under the
stairs. Both houses are unoccupied.
Ono is offered for rent nt $?()0 a year.
If the object of thc builder of these
extraordinary houses was simply to shut
out thc lighl from his neighbor's build
ing, hu would probably have accomplish
ed the same end at much less expense by
adopting Mr. George Kemp's device ol
sheet iron shields. Mr. Kemp did not
wish tho occupa ll ls of tho building in
tho rear of bia house, at No. 720 Fifth
avenue, to overlook his premises, and so
he built an iron scaffolding in his back
yard and placed iron shields against tho
obnoxious openings, shutting out air and
light as completely as u brick wall
would havo done. This arrangement
has been for years the source of no little
comment from tho neighbors and passers
by. m_

Several days ngo Mr. George Webley,
one of thu most promising young planters
in Arkansas, came to the city bringing
the sad intelligence of his father's death.
