Mr. Martin Phillip?, a respecte,! citizen
of Brushy Creek township in this county
died lust week at the advanced age of about
?'Khty years. His remains were interred
in the Fair View Church vard, after up
propriute funeral services, which wer*
attended hy a hlrge congregation of the
neighbors and friend? of the deceased.
We regret to learn from a telegram lo
Dr. 8. M. Orr, of this city, that his uncle,
Dr. 8. S. Marshall, of Greenville, was acci
dentally shot and killed in Florida, whither
he had gone on a visit. Dr. Murshall was
a prominent and respected citizen of Green
ville, and was well known throughout the
SUte. The telegram gave none of the par
ticulars of the fatal accident.
Th? election of ofllcers Tor the new Third
Regiment, S. V. T.. was held on Wediies
day of Inst week. The total number of
votes cast by thc Palmetto Riflemen of this
city was 34. The vote was unanimous for
the ticket nominated ut Greenville some
weeks since, as follows: Colonel, J. W.
Norwood, of Greenville ; Lieutenant-Colo
nel, J. E. Allen, of Anderson; Major, it.
S. Anderson, of Edgefield.
The dwelling house, kitchen and smoke
house of Mr. P. T. Burton, who resides on
the linc of Hall and Corner townships, was
burned on last Friday night. When the
fire was discovered it had gained auch a
headway that it was impossible to save
anytbiug, consequently ali of Mr. Burton's
household furniture, clothing and a good
supply of provision*: were destroyed. The
fire is supposed to have caught from * de
fective chimney. Mr. Burton's losi will
aggregate about seven hundred dollars.
A cotton factory is occasionally talked of
on our streets. Talk does not amount to
much, however, unless backed by some or
ganized effort. We have been talking long !
enough. We tbould awako from our
lethargy and go to work. We have the
capital in our County, and ull that is need
ed is for some one to take the initiatory
Bteps towards organizing a stock company.
Enough hus been said about tba advantages
to be derived from a cotton factory, and wo
believe our people are willing and anxious
to put their money into such an enterprise.

Methodist Church on last Sunday after
noon was a very pleasant occasion. The
various Sunday Schools of the city were
invited to be present, and consequently the
building wus filled to its utmost capacity.
Addresses were mnde by Mr. B. Frank
Mauldin, the Superintendant of thc Uaptbt
Sunduy School, and Kev. T. G. Herbert, the
Presiding Elder of the Greenville District.
The addresses were replete with words of
wisilom and advice, and were listened to
with marked attention by de vast nssem

his store the other day that resided sixteen
miles beyond Hartwell, Ga. They bought
a good bill of goods, and were delighted

Tho Columbia correspondent of the Au
gusta Chronicle if- ConstitiUionalitl hus the
following to say about Maj. Murray, and
the Local takes the liberty of publishing it
in these columns:- "The election of Major
E. B. Murray, of Anderson, as a Director
of the Columbia and Greenville Railroad,
is a fitting and deserved tribute to his emi
nent abilities. Major Murray is a young
man, but has already attained u position in
the State of which many men much older
might justly be proud. He ia a lawyer and
a leading member of thc South Carolina
House of Representatives, and wasaprom
inent caudidate for the Speakership last
November. He ls the editor of the An
derson IKTEI.LIOE.NCEB, and has made his
paper a power in the SUte. He is one of
the most promising of the rising young
men of South Curolina, and will in timo
reach the highest round of Hie ladder."
At a meeting of the Palmetto Riflemen
on last Monday night, Capt. John E. Allen,
having been olected Lieutenant-Colonel of
the Third Regiment, S. V. T., tendered his
resignation us thc commanding otllcer of
the Company. An election to fill the va
cancy was immediately entered into, and
resulted in the unanimotia choice of First
Lieutenant Thoa. P. Hill a? tho Captain of
the Company. Second Lieutenant Orr was
then promoted to the position of Fi: t
Lieutenant, Third Lieutenant Maxwell to
the position of Second Lieutenant, and Or
derly 8ergeaut McGee to the position of
Third Lieutenant. Private Foster Pant
was then unanimously elected Orderly Ser
geant of the Company. The promotion of
these gentlemen to their respective positions
by tba Company is a deserved and fitting
tribute to their military zeal and worth,
and they will discharge their duties not
only honorably to themselves, but credita
bly to the Company. Capt. Allen's resig
nation was received with much regret by
the Company, for he had been Its com
manding officer ever since ita reorganization
in 1878, and as such had won the esteem
and love of all his comrades.

township on thc subject of "Subscription"
or **No Subscription" to the capital stock of
the Carolina, Cumberland Gap and Chicago
Railroad Company wns returned by the
Managers to the Board ol County Commis
sioners at their regular monthly meeting
on lust Tuesduy. The total number of
votes exit in William-ton was 427,of which

make the subscription of six thousand dol

In the matter ol' the Belton election,
there was not th? most satisfactory evidence
of a majority for or against subscription,
the Chairman and the other members ol
the Board of Managers differing in (heir
certificates as to the result. The County
Commissioners, therefore, unanimously de
cided to lake no further steps towards
making the subscription, as their duty in
the premises is only prescribed wherea ma
jority is deelarcd in favor of subscription.
Paying Debts.
One of our religious exchanges has the
following strong remarks on thi? subject.
They drive the nail to the head and clinch
it:
Men may sophisticate bow they please.
They can never make it right, ami all the
iniquitous laws in tho universe cannot

debts. There is a sin in t his neglect as clear
and as deserving church discipline aa ie
stealing or false swearing. He who vio
lates bis promise to pay, ar withholds the

the sight of all honest men he is a swindler.
Religion may be a very comfortable cloak
