upon a dress for the lady who spoke, laid j
aside her work, and. going to thc drawer |
in the sideboard, took out a silver collin

quietly. "Il was on my eoflin-al leust

hours, nnd had it not been for the intelli
gence of a lady who came lo attend my
funeral I should have been in it now.
My uncle took it to his home in Chicago,
where hu is fond of showing it to his
friends um] telling my story. I kepi tho

see, for the recollections it awakens mc
not pleasant.
"Wlu n i was a young git! I was in
very dei ?cate health. I used to fall into
trances, in which I knew all tbul was
going on around mc, and heard every
wotil said in the room where I lay, but I
could not speak or make tho slightest
sign of life. My body grew gradually
colder, but ordinarily I aroused myself
with a start w ?thin ten *>r fifteen minutes.
Tile doctor said it was a form of epilepsy,
and warned mo that some doy or other
an attack might bc prolonged and mis
taken for death, lt ai ways affected me
nuder thc same conditions. Aller sleep
ing, us consciousness slowly returned, I
found myself wide awake, but unable to
speak or move.
"After the doctor's caution, I begun to
gnnv afraid of myself, ll was a horrible
sensntion. i dreaded to go io sleep at
night, und, though drowsiness over
powered mc at last, I awoke unrefreshed,
buring the day 1 was languid und tired,
but I dared not lie down, for I knew by
experience timi if I slept by daylight I
was almost certain la (all into a trance on
awaking. A s a consequence of all this
mental disturbance I beenme seriously
ill, and I was ordered to the country, but
before arrangements could be linnie for
me to go I was stricken down with brain
fever, uud my life was despaired ol.
"Now, before the fever attacked me,
and while I was confined tn my bed by
the sickness brought on by anxiety nbuut
my condition, tho trances seemed to dis
appear. When I slept I was refreshed,
and awoke nt once lo full vigor, and not,
as formerly, by slow degrees, to wretched
helplessness and immobility. I think I
should have escaped the brain fever had
it not been for the doctor. Ho told me
that the epilepsy was only mustering its
forces for au attack moro vigorous than
any I had yet experienced-as a storm
sometimes lulls before it sweeps every
thing before il. Ile frightened
inc terribly, and my brain gave way.
"The brain fever was conquered, but
I was very weak-so weak that I did not
rally. The doctor, always cheerful, said
I never would. I lay for days neither
asleep nor awake, but not in a trance, for
I could move and speak feebly. 'Sho
may go out like the simd' of a ca die ut
any minute,' said the doctor, in my bear
ing, and I nearly verified his prediction
by going out at once.
"Ono day-it was June 2, 1 Sli t-I felt
that I was really improving. Life seem
ed tobe coming back to me. Tho doctor
had not nuticedit, but I knew by thc un

At last I grew tired, and, for the first
time in several weeks, I slept soundly
aud healthily.
"I awoko slowly, and willi the rigor of
limb that I knew so well. An unuttera
ble horror took possession of mo as I
felt that I was in a trance and remember
ed the good doctor's capacity for blunder
ing. Mv fears wero well founded, for
half an hour later, when the nursu came
to look at me, I heard her utter a (prick
exclamation of alarm, and hurrying
away, she called my mother mid sisters.
The doctor was summoned, and arrived
when nil my relatives in the houso were
around my bed. Ho felt my pulse, put
his hand upon my forehead, forced open
one of my eyes, and examined the pupil,
little thinking that I saw him ns plainly
ns ho saw rae, and sorrowfully remark
ed:
" 'I feared it. She is going fast !'
"Oh, thc misery of that day and tho
. night following ! On ibo morning of
June 3 my body waa cold and stiff, and,
while my mind was as activo as every. I
knew that I looked. Uko a corpse. My
friends thought me dead, and whon tho
doctor came they stood asido, silent und
weeping, nnd made way for him to ap
proach tho bed. He looked at me steadi
ly for a few seconds and then said rever
entially :
" 'Yes, poor creature, she is gone,' and
ho covered my fuce with the sheot. .
"And this was tho man who had first
told mo that an epileptic lit might bo -?o
prolonged os to be mistaken lor death.
My indignation at that moment absolute
ly overpowered my fear. Otherwise, I
believe I should have died on tho spot.
"For more than two days I lay motion
less on the bed. Tuberoses were strewn
over nie. Friends came to seo me, and
reminded each other of good qualities iu
mo that, neither myself or others, had
ever before been suspected. 1 beard it
all. Nobody spoke of me except au n
corpse ; none noticed, what I am euro
must have boen apparent, that my face
had not lost tho color of life, and on the
night of Juno 4th I lay beside my open
collin! On tho morning of tho 5th I
was put into it, for I was to bo buried
that day.
, "I had heard the inscription on tho

'Clara Munee. Aged 1G years. Poor
girl. 8o young to be called away. But
she was always delicate 1' Oh, why could
I not speak ? I could not even try to
speak or move. All volition seemed to
have died in me, and I could only pray
ailontly that I might die too before the
last rite: were performed, but I felt that
t hoi u was little chance of that, because I
was full of lifo.
"The undertaker's men were in tho
room waiting to fasten down the coffin lid.

the coffin. She was my Aunt Jane, and

think it possible that she would allow me
to be buried alive. She was stooping to

with the very simple and homely re

mental agony had made my nose bleed.
"Now, the doctor knew quite enough
