The Stockholders of the Augusta and
Knoxville Railroad have authorized the
Directora to lease or sell the Road on the
most favorable terms, lt js reported that
Hie South Carolina and tbe Georgi? Central
Railroads are negotiating for the lease or
purchase of the line.
Mr. Homer Rolland, who has been re
siding in Arkansas for the past eighteen
months, returned to this County, his native
home, on the 13th inst. He recently mar
ried Miss Wibi? Lucas, of Fulton County,
Ark., and they intend in future making
their home in our midst.
Col. John C. Haskell has been appointed
attorney of the Columbia <fe Greenville
Railroad, io succeed (Jen. James Connor, of
Charleston, who has resigned. It is also
reported that Col. J. W. Fry, the present
Superintendent of the Road," will resign,
and Mr? J. Stewart Land appointed as his
successor.
The last Legislature made some impor
tant changes in regard to the law regulating
Constable's and SberifTs fees. A Consta
ble is now entitled to one dollar for each
defendant named in a warrant, and one
dollar for summoning witnesses. A Sher
iff receives mileage for serving pap?is go
ing and returning.
The 1st of February will soon be here,
and yet quite a number of our citizens have
not made their Returns to the City Clerk.
The Clerk is vary anxious to get his book?
ready for the collection ol taxes by the 1st
of February, and you will do him and tho
Council a greac favor by making your Re
turns immediately. Attend to it to-day.
A correspondent of the Hartwell (Ga.)
Sun wnnts the Augusta it Elberton Rail
road Company to extend its proposed line
to Eastatoe Gap, by the way of Hartwell.
Andersonville, Townville and Seneca. He
says that it would he the shortest line that
could bc adopted to the West. He also
says the people are anxious for the pro
posed Road, and will see that it is graded.
Mrs. Belina McMahan, wife of Mr. John
A. McMahan, whose death we announced
last week, died on Saturday morning, the
20th inst., just live days after the death of
ber husband, from an attack of pneumonia
contracted three or four days before her
death. She was a member of Good Hope
Presbyterian Church, and was an excellent
lady, esteemed by all of her acquaintances.
The dwelling house of Mr. C. T. Chap
man, who resides in the Eastern section of
this County, near Shady Grove Church,
was bumed on last Friday morning, 19th
inst. All his household goods, with the
exception of two or three feather beds, was
destroyed, together with $150 or $200 in
money, a few notes and ahout 150 bushels
of wheat. Tht origin of the fire is un
known, but it is supposed to have been the
work of an incendiary.

Frank byles and .indy Williams, both
colored, had an altercation at thc Blue
Ridge Yard on last Friday, which resulted
in the former being stabbed by the latter in
the head and face. Williams has been
com mitt ed to jail to await his trial at the
next term of Court. Lyies and Williams
are members of the Christian Association,
and it seems that tbe latter dunned the
former for twenty-five cents, which, he
alleged, Lyles owed the society. Hence the
difficulty.
Mrs. Mary A. Watson, wife of Mr. John
M. Watson, died at the residence of her
husband, eight miles Northwest of Ander
son, on Wednesday, 3rd inst., after an ill
ness of several months. Mrs. Watson was
about sixty years of age, ami hail been a
consistent mcniher of Sandy Springs
Church for fifty years. She was an ex
cellent lady, and loaves a wide circle of
Mends and relatives to mourn her death.

Death o? Mr. E. r. Murrah.
lt is with much regret that wo announce

mund F. Murrah, which occurred in this
city on Sunday afternoon, at 5 o'clock, from
thc elToct of gradual paralysis, with which
he was stricken on Wednesday, the 2Sth
day of December last. The uialadv from
Mic first grew stea.lily worse, until at last
he died as calmly and ns peacefully as sloop
comes to thc weary. Mr. Murrah was a
mun of high character and great Integrity.
He was a pious and exemplary man in his
bfc, and was universally esteemed hy thu**
who knew him. He was a Steward in the
Methodist Church, of which he was a
member for ninny years. He was a mem
ber of tho Town Council of Anderson for
several terms, aud for the past five years
was Jury Commissioner ot Anderson
County. In all of the duties of life he was
faithful and conscientious to an unusual
degree, being governed as absolutely us any j
man can he by bia convictions of right and
wrong. His remains were interred in the
Presbyterian Cemetery in this city on Mon
day afternoon with Masonic honors, after
appropriate funeral services, conducted by
Kev. J. VY. Walling, in the presence of a
large assemblage of the relatives and
friends of the deceased. Mr. Murrah was
about silty years of age, and leaves many
relatives and friends who mourn bis death*.
