How lt YneU to H:?v?? Delirium Tremen*.
' Were the monkeys ever aller roe?

form:'1 and die old soaker drew a long
breath ami shuddered al the recollection.
.'It was out ia Texas." lie continued.
'.Texas is UK? greatest State on the Amer
ican continent for the jim jam-. .More
men nil! have di lirium tremens in Texas
in December and January, UIKII in any
other Slate in a whole year. Why, I
have seen 'em two in it bcd lighting
until you couldn't rest. I was in San
Antonio once-got roaring drunk there
um] stayed drunk two weeks. I was ns
limber asa rag for a whole week, and
one day, just ns I was entirely mid oom
plctely broke, the police run me in. Thc*
next morning I was not in a condition to
be tried, and slaved in tho lock-up all
that day and night. Two ?lays without
liquor lound mc so restless that F could
not sleep. I knew that my system ne ed
ed to bc let dou n g illy from such a ,
spree, and 1 had begged for whisky
without success. 1 was cornered, thad
no money, no whisky, no friends, ami I ,
saw distinctly what was sure to follow the j
sudden withdrawal ol" the stimulant that |
had kept me up for two weeks. I asked
for morphine, and they said they wern't
getting up limerais. J begged them for
Clod'a sake to give ino anything that
would save me from delirium tremens,
but they laughed at nie. I paced tho
floor of my cell all night. I felt weak,
my hand trembled willi nervousness, my i
feet and hands grew cold. All ut one?' I I
fell like my body was swelling. My j
head felt as heavy as lead and hail" as
big as a barrel. My legs felt as big
around us n tree; 1 felt like I was Mink- i
ing away. I gol scared at my condition j
and then I begau to imagine a? sorts ol' j
things. I fell into a sort of reverie from
which I was awnkened by seeing thc face
of a dend man, with his sad, glassy eyes
fieering in through thc grated door of
the cell ami just visible in the dim light.
. The face moved away slowly. Great
beaven ! I would recognize that face to
day if I were to see it, it uridu such a
terr'blo intprcssioo ou my mind. My
cell was dark. I turned away from the
door and in ii minute I saw lue lace in
one corner of the room. The head was
on the body of a dog. it moved slowly
from side io ?ide and then I saw two.
Then a third head came that was severed
from thc body and the blood was still
vi-ibio about the throat. Then I saw a
dozen heads and then the room was full
of them and they all made at nie. I
gave a yell that was loud enough to have
waked all San Antonio und mudo a break
for tho door. Do you think ti man would
come to my help7 Not a man. I raced
around that cell and nearly butted my
brains out against the wall and finally
mude ii dive fur my blanket. I covered
tlf* my bend but I covced up several
other heads willi it ami I could feel their
cold cheeks against mine. I yelled mid
howled like a madman. I beat at 'em
with my blanket, but they would dodge
mc, and I couldn't hit one a square lick
Finally I mudo a terrible lunge, and fell
on the floor almost insensible to every
thing. Then they left me, and I was
congrululuting m y sol I on my oscujiu uml
wondering how long it would be Until
daylight, when I suddenly

like I hud been fired from n cannon. A
huge rattlesnake had slipped into the
folds of my blanket, ami was coiling
himself about my neck. I felt for my
knife only to remember that it hud been
taken from me when I was locked lip.
Then I caught the nmn-ter ?ti my grasp,
and while lie hissed and rultled, und
struck nt me, I tore him from around my
neck uml dashed him toward thc floor.
He turned and standing rm his tail reach
ed deliberately up mid hit me on the
nose. I could see hi? lillie beat! like eyes
na they twinkled devilishly, and could
feel the keen flings as they penetrated
my flesh. My face began to swell and I
fo?>. wmkyr th:;:; s eer and finally reeled
and fell on the floor. A thousand snakes
came through the walls and ran all over
my body and a big old monkey came and
Bat down bil the floor close m to my bead
atid said th ut I would never get out of it
alive, that old Satan was coming and
would burn thc house down and that I
was lo go to torment, and was to lay for
ever stretched stark naked on a red-hot
table. I begged for mercy, and then I
heard pistols firing outside mid looked
out and saw the police fighting the devil
and his angels, and the snakes and the
big monkey inside shouted lo the dovils
to whoop 'em up. Hint I wus in there and
they had me. I asked the big monkey
what they were after me for. lie avid
that I wus a refugee from justice and that
while I had escaped the punishments of
earth, I could nut encape the punishment
of perdition. I honra footstep ir. the

"What then ?"
"I waked up all right, nnd when I
knew whnt had happened I left San An

town by entering it since that day."
"Ever lind 'em since?"
"Yes, I have had slight attacks, hut
never did I spend such a time an that
speut in the lock-up nt San Antonio. I
bave seen many a mun have 'the horrors'
and I tell you it is something to be dread
ed. It is no laughing matter to the man
who bas the attack. Everything that he
secs is real to him and no power of pen
or words can give even the faint CM idea
of the mental torture that a man under
goes while persued by monkeys and
snakes. I would not blame any man for
taking his own life to escape three day's
Bullering from delirium tremol?n"
"How does the trouble generally come
first ?"
"After a protracted debauch in which
the iuebiiite has surrendered himself
with a sort of insane fury to drink for
days or weeks and the brain or stomach,
or both, are stimulate'', into inflamatlun,
or a stale bordering ou it. Drinks be
come disgusting and cannot be retained,
or sometimes they are withheld, or are
unattainable. The face is flushed and
turgid, the lips intensely red, the bead
bot, the tongue furred, or nf a fiery red
ness, the appetite gone, tbe thirst ex
treme and toe pulse excited, full and
tense. When you get in that fix, you are
ready to tee snakes in your boob).'7

Wi- lin ve road many description* of
the effect produced by gnat oratora upon
their audience*, mid have once or twice
witnessed queer acenes ol thc same kimi,
as it lias been our fortune lo bear some
great men speak, hut an incident related
to us several years ago l?y a gentleman
who lias long been prominent in public
affaira and who was once a United State s
minister toa European Court, is perhaps
aa remarkable au illustration ol the pow
er and eloquence ai any ever recorded.
The gentleman referred to was walking
with us from the Capitol in Washington
just after we had buth been listening lo
an unusually line speech in the House of
Represen tali ves, upon which wc were
commenting, when, turning to us, he
said :
"You ?ire not old enough to remember
William C. Preston when in public life.
He was by far the greatest orator lhat 1
ever bearii, and never equalled, perhaps,
by any American except i'atrick Henry,
if by him. I was a sort of pet of Mr.
Clay, and often heard him and all his
great contemporaries speak, but, although
sometimes overwhelming, he was not the
equal ol Mr. freston. Clay, Webster,
Calhoun, Sargent S. Prentiss, and all thu
other great orators of that day iiad each
his own peculiar style, and each was dif
ferent Irom the oilier ; but Preston
seemed lo combine all.
"I once witnessed a scene at Macon,
(?a., which i can ncvCf forget, and which,
ridiculous ns it seemed afterwards, furn
ished for thal very reason the most con
clusive and striking proof of Mr. Pres
ton's absolute controle over au audience.
I have thought of it a thousand times,
and I know of no parallel to it.
"It was in tho Clay campaigu of 1844.
An immense audience, fifteen or twenty
thousand, had assembled to hear Preston.
A largo singe bad been erected, which
was crowded willi prominent persona a nd
the multitude was packed around it.
There was the usual buzz and confusion
incident to such occasions, until alter
Preston had been speaking a few mo
ments, when it began to subside, und
soon there was a dead silence, except the
music of thal wonderful voice, ile was
in fine condition foi his work, und ?etil
at it iti his best style. Thu silence seemed
io intensify us the lido ot bia eloquence
poured over thu dense mass of enchanted
listeners. With the swell of bis sono
rous voice tho audience seemed to riso
on tiptoe, and to sink buck ngniu willi
its ebbing cadences; and again they
swayed willi the sweep of his arm like a
wheat-field lo the breeze. At length, in
a magnificent burst of inspiration-with
his long arm raised high, his eyes flash
ing, and the multitude banging breath
lessly upon his words, he seized the brown
wig which he wore, held it up over bis
shining bald head, and, still soaring in
his splendid Hight, replaced it cross-wise
and soared ou ; and, sir, 1 assure you
that th -re/was not, in that vast audience,
the lei.at ripple of laughter ul this most
ridiculous performance, but, on ibo con
trary, noone seemed even lo notice it,
so completely entranced was every lis
tener."
Another distinguished gentleman, now
dead, once told us that he had heard all
the great orators of li fly years ago, bul
thal no never knew what human elo
quence WHS until he benni William C.
Preston. He heard him only once, and
that was in thc Senate, when upon the
urgent requett of Mr. (May and others,
be spoke extemporaneously for iihoul
iweniy minutes, ou a bill lo pension the
widow (or daughter) of the first so.(lier
killed al the battle of Lexington. "He
had not been apeaking," said be, "five
minutes before thc cold chills began to
run down my spine, nod from thai lime
until bc liuished I sat like one in a trance.
It was supernatural. I never expect to
hear anything liku il nguiu."
A PAINU I.SUBJECT, -old Jim Walk
up has thu reputation of being nmong
his friends, rather close. His enemies
say he is too mean to die. Not long
since an old colored mun, Unelo Nuce,
who had been iii the Walkup family all
his life, and who refused to leave his old
master after the war, died in this city in
extreme poverty. When the colored
delegation went around taking np collec
tions lo plant Uncle Nace, they called on
old Jim Waikno. That was the first in
timation he hud of the death of the old
fnmily servant, and it nearly killed him.
He shed real tears and used the most ex
travagant language in praising '.he faith
ful old Uncle Nace.
"How much am you gwinc to contrib
ute to de funeral expenses?" asked the
foreman of tho assessment committee.
"Not a cent," gronned old Walkup,
hiding his face and shaking all over to
conceal his emotion. "If I was to con
tribute money for such a purooso I would
always Ld haunted with the idea that I
helped put him under the ground. It's
too painful to talk about. Go v.'ay and
leave ma to my misery."-Trio? Si?intj$.

Instead of feeling tired and
worn out, instead of aches

rather feel fresh and strong?
You can continue feeling

you can change it if you

ing .11 uv lt i nc.- Tins Machine has been
styled thc "Motithcrn Fuvorlte"
-and justly should it be-for it is the light
est running, most noiseless, most durable
and easiest Machine to manage now in use.
lt uses the straight self-adjusting needle,
ainl the work passes straight from the o .
rator. It does away with the noisy shut
but uses a bobbin that holds one hundred
yards of thread oil the underside, thereby
saving a great annoyance in stopping so
often to lill the shuttle.' It sews from the
lightest to the very heavie.it fabric without
change of tent Ion. It will do all the work
that any other Machine will do. anda great
deal that no other can do. Each Machine
warranted for live years, and furnished
with all thc latest attachments.
Parties in want of u first-class Machine
will please call and see the !\en So. 8
for family use, the No. 6 for shoe-makers,
and the So. IO for tailors and dress
makers. They are beyond doubt the best
Machine on the market.
