The Hot Supper for the benefit of the
Sons of Temperance in the Masonic Hall
on last Friday was a very successful and
pleasant occasion. The young ladies in
charge were very atteutivo to the custom

ate his dinner ho was waited on by six or
seven charming young ladies, and it made
him feel like he was in some distant world,

In their courteous attention. He regretted

On last Monday night a tenant bouse on
the plantation of Mr. J. J. Dobbins, about
one-half of a mile from the Kastern side
of the citv limits, was burned down. The
house had just been completed, and was not
occupied. The burning was evidently the
work of an incendiary, as a broken jug,
which had the odor of kerosene oil about it,
was round near hy. On Tuesday morning
Mr. Dobbins brought the pieces o? the jug
to the citv, and, alter inquiry, fuund out
that a negro natue?? Wost Jcnkitts had
uought Borne keroseno oil in a iug at the
?tore of Messrs. N. 0. Farmer ck Bro. on
Monday afternoon. The mouth of th?
droken'lug was peculiarly shaped, and one
of Mr. Farmer's clerks recognized it as the
same one he had tilled for Jenkins the even
ing before. A warrant was immediately
issued far Jenkins, and Policeman McGee
mon had him in limbo. Jenkins told sev
eral conflicting stories about tb? matter,
ind finally admitted that the house was
burned, but denied doing it himself. He
said that two strange negroes set lire to the
house, and that he was paid to show them
where it was located.

UNBELIEVING VIOLET.
I think Violet wan the moat unbeliev
ing little girl that ever lived. She did
not believe at all that her dark brown
hood trot dark brown, but black, until
alie had compared it herself with a piece
of black cloth, though her mother had
told ber all along it was brown. And
she didn't believe rou could catch a
robin, even if jou did get the salt on its
tail. And she didn't oelieve but what
if vow just kept on wal king-?Talking
walking, you would get to the end of
the world after awhile,-the very edge
of the end, where it stopped,-and noth
ing waa left but air to step on. She did
not believe that was true at all, what
the big Cobb girl said, that you couldn't
get to the end becauno there wasn't any
end. She said she meaut to start to
walking herself some day and see.
"You'll wait until you get through
going to school, won't you?" asked her
brother Ed. "I heard you say the other
day that you won't have Nellie get
ahead of you for anything. Hut she
will if you don't look out; she'll be
clear through the eighth grads before
you get even half way to the end of the
world I Maybe she'll be through the
seventh and into the sixth by the time
you get back. And then she'll be two
5rades ahead of you nil the rest of your
ava."
Violet could not help feeling rather
worried at this dreadful prophecy of
Ed's.
"1'erhnpn it wouldn't take me as long
as all that," she said. "I don't believe
it would. But I guess I'll wait, any
way. It makes mc tired euuugh vu
walk over to Aunt Nancy's-and of
course the ond of the world is a great
deal farther than that. Bo I will wait
lill then. I'll be stronger then, I sup
pose."
"Yes," said Ed ; "and more sensible,
let us hope. By tbeu perhaps you won't
be quite such a goosie."
"Uh, I don't oelieve that," answered
Violet, quickly.
You see for yourself, don't you, how
unbelieving she was? Well, this being
so unbelieving was what got her into
trouble. Up to her very waist in
trouble, as you shall see.
Violet's folks lived in a mining re
gion, and about two blocks from ber
nome there was a great space of ground,
where the miners had been digging for
copper ore. But they had recently aban
doned this claim, and they left it look
ing like a pond with toe water all
dipped out of it, a pond with a very
muddy bottom. The mud was very deep
in some parts, and I don't see why un
der ;b? tua lbs pisT ?ss nHriwed at
all, especially in a town where such un
believing little girls as Violet lived.
But there was a rickety old fence around
three sides of it, and on the other aide
was the brook from which the miners
had obtained their watet, to you ace
there was no danger of any one falling
in ; and I suppose the inhabitants of
that town never dreamed thai any one
would deliberately climb the fence and
try to wali on the mud. That very
thing happened, though 1 Violet Swin
ton tried to walk on that mud ; she
didn't believe she would sink. You
see, the bot sun shining on the mud, had
caused a thick crust to form on the top,
and the beat had also made the crust
crack all over into what Violet called
"dead little angles, squares and things,
just like the teacher made on tho black
board."
"This is a right-angle," she said, cau
tiously stepping between two cracks
near the edge.
"This is a circle," taking another step,
" 'cept it aiu't round enough ; this is a
square and this is a"
"O Violet 1 don't go any further,"
cried Nellie, who was looking on over
the fence in great concern. "You'll
sink' in tho mud, sure. Ed said this
mornlcj; it waon't safe."
"Oh, pshaw! I dou't believe it," said
Violet, patting forward her foot to step
on a right-angled triangle.
"This is a-n-bat do you call-it-a
Oh my I lom sinking! I am! Oh!
Oh ! Ob ! Nellie, come over and pull
me out, quick !"
Then poor little Nellie, who bad done
her best to keep Violet off from the
mud, crawled through the fence, and
tried to rescue ber friend. But sb? only
sank herself-clear to the tops of her
?boes. And there was Violet sinking
deeper and deeper. 8he was in over
her Knees already.
"Let's scream," cried Nelli?, franti
cally, "let's scream like everything 1"
And then they screamed. Now, once
in a while, screaming is s very good
thing; this time it was. For the neigh
bors esme, before the echo died, almost,
it was such a dreadful scream. And
they pulled out Violet, just ai she had
got to ber waist in the mud, and Nellie
wriggled herself out when she saw them
coming.
And Violet's mother took her home,
and gave her a bath, aod put her to
bed, and scolded her and kissed ber, and
scolded her some more. And after
awhile when Ed came in, Violet confi
ded to bim that "whether there was any
end to the world or not, she didn't be
lieve there was any bottom to it."
