Ori lost Monday a warrant was placad in the hands of Constable T. E. James for tho ?irrest of a negro named Frank Moon, who bad committed au assault upon a gentle man residing in Brushy Creek township. After diligent search, Moon was found nt (benin house on the plantation of Mr. J. U. Whitfield, four miles North of the city iibout 12 o'clock at night. Mr. Jame*' j knowing the character of the negro, pre- , ?nted his pistol at him, and requested him * to surrender, which he did without uny re ?alance.- Mr. James then handed his pistol I los?me one behind him. and immediately I began placing hand cuffs on the prisoner. ' \\ bile in the act of doing this, some person tired a pistol, the hall striking the prisoner . an the lefl cheek, ranging up the side of ', the face and through the ear. The wound , is a painful one, though not serious. Mr. James was accompanied hy several other gentlemen, none of whom knew who fired < the pistol, as it wa? very dark, aud they tully had a small torch for a light. Mr. Janies thinks, however, that when he hand- ? sd his pistol behind him, a brother of the prisoner, Alf. Moon, who was standing near, took it. He also thinks that the shot I was tired at him, with a view of rescuing the prisoner. Alf. Moon, immediately < niter the pistol was tired, left the premises, : ind bas nut been heard of since. The next , (norning the pistol was found on the {round near the gin house. The above facts ire given as they were told the reporter. Fire st Belton. BEI.TO.N. 8. C., Nov. 25. MR. EMTOK : The gin house of Mr. E. B. Bice, in this place, was destroyed by lire un the afternoon of Thursday, 23rd" inst. Die House was also occupied by Mr. E. T. | Tollcson and J. Lee Thompson as a work shop, each of whom lost in tools, material and unfinished work aboui $75apiece. Mr. Bice's lois will foot up about $1,S00. con sisting of the house, gin, feeder and con- ( denser, press, scales, damage io his engine, about 2j bates of cotton, about 1,600 bush ids of cotton seed, 150 yards of bagging, an extru feeder and brush Wheel, a lot of belt ing and buggy wheels, view and work , benches, on which there was no insurance. The fire occurred about 3 p. m., and was caused by the ignition of a mutch near the press box. lt ia supposed that thc match was cropped hy sonic one and ignited hy ano of the workmen at the press. Mr. Rice was painfully but not seriously burned about the fuce and hands while on leavoring to subdue the fire. No one else was injured. There were three bales of cotton dam jged hy the fire besides the ones already mentioned. About sixty bales were saved, which were ready packed and lying around the press. The wind fortunately was blow ing from thc Mouth west, which carried the lire away from the surrounding buildings ind prevented further loss. J. IL L. The Man For SpeaUer. He is a young man, and a straightout ' Democrat of the progressive wing of the party.
