Eloquent and entertaining speeches were made in the morning by Messrs. E. M. H?cker and K. H. Bailey, and m the afternoon bv Messrs. John B. Moore and A. T. Brovles. Du ring the recess a most sumptuous basket dinner was enjoyed by all present, and the greatest pleasure marked the day through out. The people of Piercetown'are a most hospitable people, and on this occasion they coin ibuled everything possible to the en joyment o' their visitors and of each other. The meeting at Sandy Springs on last Saturday morning was verv well attended by both citizens and candidates, consider ing the rainy day. (?uite a number of la dies graced the occasion. Messrs. John B. Moore. A. T. Broyles, J. Helton Watson, E. B. Murray and ?I. G. Scudday spoke in the morning, and Messrs. . W hitner . M. Prince, It. P. Clinkscales, II. I. Ki ting, A. S. Todd, . B. A. Robinson, J. T. Harnes, ( . W. Faut, Jere. Yeargin, U. W. Todd, R. M. Burriss, J. H. Jones and others spoke in the afternoon. Mr. S. L. Eskew presided over the meeting, which was very pleasant throughout. The citi zens carried a basket ditmer, and showed every attention which the occasion required to the candidates and other visitors present. Sandy Springs is a g'.od place at which to have a meeting. The advertisement of the South Carolina University appears in another column. The arrangements inaile in this institution present the cheapest opportunity of se curing a thorough cducction that have over been oflered to the people of this State. Last year there were four hundred and fifty students from Soutli Carolina in Colleges outside of the State, whoso expenses aver aged more than $500 each, giving the enor mous sum of $225,000 a year that the peo ple of this State are paying to keep up in stitutions outside of the State. These fcur hundred and fiily students at the South Carolina University would keep all of this money at home. ?t $ 175 a year, tho largest amount necessary at this University, they would cost $78,750, leaving a clear saving to the parents of tho students of $140,2.50. In a few years this University will be the equal of any in the United States, and will do a great work for the educational and material interests of South Carolina. The Congressional Convention. The Democratic Congressional Conven tion of the Third District met at Anderson on last Friday, at 12 o'clock m., a majority of the delegates from each County in the District being present. Tho Convention was called to order by Col. E. B. Gary, of Abbeville, upon whose motion Mr. George S. Mower, of Newberry, was called to the chair, and Messrs. G. E. Prince and Till ruan Wardlaw us Secretaries. On motion of Mr. Murray, the temporary organization was declared the permanent organization of the Convention, and nomi nations for Congressman were called for, upon which Col. E. B. Gary nominated Col. D. Wvatt Aikcn in a ringing speech, which was* seconded by Mr. Joseph W. Sbelor, of Oconee. Col. Aikcn was then unanimously nominated by acclamation as the Democratic candidate for Congress from the Third Congressional District, and upon motion of Gen. Humphreys a committee was appointed to notify him of his unani mous nomination. Maj. John B. Moore then asked that the meeting hear from the'various delegates present as to the political condition of their Counties, upon which Messrs. E. B. Gary, John Ii. Moore, J. W. Sbelor, C. L. Hol lingsworth, J. M. Johnstone and others were called for, and responded in tliort speeches, showing the Democratic party of the Third Congressional District to be in a most excellent condition for tho coming race. Tho Convention then adjourned, the uttermost harmony and good feeling hav ing prevailed throughout. The candidate, D. Wvatt Aikcn, of Cokes bury, was born at winnsboro, Falrneld County, S. C, March 17, 1828; received an academic education at Mount Zton Insti tute, Winnsboro ; graduated at the South Carolina College, Columbia, in 1840 ; taught school two years; settled upon a farm in 1852, and has continued until the present time to profess and practice farming; m 1801 entered the volunteer service of the 8outhern Confederacy as a private; was appointed Adjutant of the Seventh Regi ment of Volunteers ; was elected Colonel ol the same when reorganized at the expira tion of their term of service ; was relieved from service by reason of wounds received on the 17th of September. 1862, at Antie tarn ? was elected to tho Suite Legislature in 1864'and again in 1860; was Master of Uio State Grange for two years, and member of the Executive Committee of the National Grange for six years ; was a delegate to the National Democratic Convention at St. Louis that nominated Tilden and Hen dricks: was elected to the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, and was re-elected to the Forty-seventh Congress as a Demo crat, receiving 27.803 votes against U./58 votes for 8tolbrand, Republican. nrastay Creek Democratic Club. This Club met at Cedar Wreath School Houso on the 2Cth inst., with Col. W. a. Fickens in the chair. Tho following reso lutions were introduced and unanimously ad/??i(IrV?d, That the candidates for the Sen ate and House of Representatives be re quested to give their views on the Lien law at the public meetings. Resolved, That we feel gratified at the an nouncement of I. W. Mckena ?? ?n? date for County Commissioner ; that ho is tho unanimous choice of this Club, and that we recommend him to all Democratic Olubs in tho County. Mr. Editor: I have been a constant n adir of your paper ever since it was start ed, and thought that you were all right ; but, sir, 1 think yon are all wrong in one thing, and that is when you say that the new City Council have made a good begin ning. If I have read correctly, they have already granted license to seven linns to retail spirituous liquors, and to any and every one that wants it if they can pay for it. Now, sir, you boaat of the city of An derson and Anderson County being lhe banner County and City of the State. The licences that bave been "already granted up to the 3lst|of December, if continued twelve months, will bring in twenty-one hundred dollars a year. Who is expected to pay this license? Is it not the dram-drinker and the poor family that has been working a cotton patch to get a little money to buy the comforts of life this Fall ? book at the result. The mother and si.-ter are often disappointed on seeing their husband, father or brother coming home drunk, and instead of the cloth or shoes or bacon, they conic home cursing and abusing the disappointed family, who will be hungry and whose horses and mules will be starving. Or, if they are too drunk to get home, or get in a fuss, they are housed m the calaboose until morning, und if they have a few dollars it is taken in the way of tines. Is that what you cull a good beginning? Again, there are biivs in the County whose parents would like to take them t? tbc city if it was not for the language they would hear on the Streets. Again, who will want tosend their girls to the very seat of seven grog shops to be educated, when they will have tu take Rome buck street to shun the lan guage used around those doors of demons?
