Tlie Anderson Grcciibac-ker Cornered.
The Lexington Dispatch of July 12th
gives the following account of a ' public
meeting in that county in which the Green
back chief of this county figured conspicu
ously :
'The Urecnback meeting at Boiling
Springs church was a miserable failure, so
far as that party was concerned. The meet
ing was attended by about sixty-five per
sons, a goodly number of whom were
Democrats. Col. John C. Hnskcll, Cant.
H. W. Rice and Hon. 8. P. Wingard spoke
in behalf of the Democrats and \V. W.
Russell and L. J. Shealey in behalf of the
Greenbackers. The Democrats achieved a
slgual rictory, and the other party was so
completely routed that they were ashamed
to attempt any organization on the grounds
and retired to some obscure snot. The
eiucstion was squarely put to Russell bv
Judge Wingard : "Were you not ill favor
of and instrumental in the passage of the
stock law in your county?Anderson ; and
were you not, to the extent of your ability,
responsible for forcing the stock luw un
Lexington County ?" Russell declined to
answer the inquiry, and thereby admitted
that he was. This killed him with those
present who were disposed to follow his
isms, and we hardly think he will put ill
his appearance in that section again."

Peverel meetings of the two Democratic
Jlubs of the city have been held during
[he week with a view of harmonizing their
inferences in regard to the municipal mat
?ers, but as yet nothing of a permanent
luture has been effected. The two clubs
appointed committees of conference to ar
range some plan for nominating municipal
ouiccrs. suu the committees mot *?nv. agreed
to recommend to their respective Clubs that
each Club be entitled to three Aldermen on
the City Council, and that Mr. D. S. Max
well be nominated for Mayor. The old
Club adopted the recommendations of the
committee on Saturday morning by a sniail
majority, but there was considerable dis
satisfaction, with the action of tho Club,
and on Monday afternoon it was called to
gether, the vote by which the report of
the committee was adopted rccotisidorcd,

tee who were instructeel to confer with tho
committee from the Young men's Cltn>
with a view of ascertaining if some metre
equitable plan for the nomination of inr
nicipal offices could not be agreeel upon. I
The Young Men's Club met Tuesday
night and endorsed the action of the j'oiht
committee, and authorized their commiato
to confer with the second committee ah
ipointcd by the old Club. The committees

There are three vacancies in the Peabody
scholarships in the Normal Department of
the University of Tennessee to be filled by
applicants from South Carolina. Tho com
petitive examination of applicants will
take place at Columbia on Wednesday, Au
gust lGth, and Unsuccessful candidates will
e entitled to receive tuition at tho Univer
sity and $200 during each term of eight
monthB from the Peabody fund, which
amount i0 fouuj sufficient for the ordinary
expenses of the student. This is a prize
