Mrs. Martha Welborn, formerly of thia county, died at the residence of her hus band, Col. Joel E. Welborn, at 8hubuta, Miss., on the 21?t of March, aged 70 years. Shawns a daughter of Wm. Bowen, and had many relatives and acquaintances in this county who will be grieved to learn of her demise. Senator Maxwell, of Abbeville county, has boen suggested by his friends for the nomination for re-election to the 8tato 8enate. Tue Doctor has been a faithful representative, and if he conaents to make tho race the people of his county will no doubt show their appreciation of his ability and faithfulness by re-election. The ladies of the Baptist church ure get ting ready for a festival on to morrow, that will begin at 1 o'clock and continue till 9 or 10 at night, nnd those who patronize them can count on getting thc full value of their money. The festival will bc given in Ma sonic Hall, nnd strawberries will constitute one of tho luxuries on the bill of fare. A colored youth came to town last Mon day and purchased a new pair of shoes, but finding them hard on his feet concluded to tako them off and waite homo barefooted. She connected self with tho Baptist church at Old Leba in early life, and was a consistent mer to the day of her death. She had been a g sufTeror, but at thc close her life went calmly and peacefully. She leaves a band and three children-two son3 ai daughter-to mourn their loss. The following prcamMu and resolutions were adopted ot u meeting of the Anderson Hoard of Trade held on the Sth of April Whereas, the Wird of Directors of thu Havannah Valley Railroad Company, at their meeting on the 5th dav of April"inst., aa we are credibly informed, agreed to re ceive the delinquent railroad taxes for tho yeara 18i<0 amt ISSI, without exacting the penalties and costs that have attached to the same, if thev should bc paid with the taxes of 1832 : and in this have met what is understood to bethe proposition of those who bave hitherto refused to pav such tax. ^o*, therefore be it Rooked, That in our judgment such ac tion on thc part of thu said Directors was not only eminently wise and proper, and for the best interests of said railroad com pany, in saving further expense, litigation and delay, ondit? proniotinga general spirit of harmony, but by their prompt and con ciliatory action have, we think, removed all reasonable excuse for further delay in the payment of the? * tuxes. KDITOK : The object of a lire-alarm b to obtain assistance, which can be best rendered, first, by knowing ?ts locality, und second, by carrying with us the best means within our reach to quench it. I would ! first suggest the use of hand force-pumps, i and when u lite is discovered the alarm should be sounded loud and often, coupled with its locality ; and further that every one leave his room or place of business with a pump, bucket or pilcher of water, axe or ladder, and above nil courage. A lire that cannot bo extinguished in its infancy with five or six buckets of waler and two of these hand force-pumps would consume the building before a lire engine could be i brought to the spot und got to work on it. If our City Council would distribute one dozen of these hand force pumpa over the town, und all our citizens lenve their rooms or place of business with the best means in their reach to quench the tire, and not de tpair, nine out of ten lires would bo arrest ed. _ D.
