The night before last tba Utica Cro

the bu'?rw'iw tA tbe evening had been
finished, the young lady sitting on the
ottoman suddenly exclaimed:
"Ob, my ! girls did you hear about
Conkling?r'
"No. What is UT" said the four
misses on the settee in one breath.
"Why, he's resigned!"
"Resigned to what. Ha b*? beso dan-'

"No.no. Can't you understand T He
has given up his Senatorsbip."
"OoodocfcS gracious I Ain't that too
bad ?"
"How much did beget for UT" queried
t?e girl with the album io her lap.
"why, you silly thing : you ought to read
the newspapers. ?euator Cookline got
dissatisfied with something iu Washing
ton and resigned bis office into tbe bands
of Qo vernor Cornell. There was a misun
derstanding between bim and tb? Presi

ert-Roberts-Let me see. Robinson
-?No, that ain't it. Ob, yes-Robertson.
Dear eua I. They say the whola cour
try is in a crisis."
"I read all about that," said the presi
dent of the club, knowingly. "Senator
Colliding and this Robertson bad some
kind of a fuss-while they were trying a
lawsuit. Come to think, Mr. Conkling
wanted to give him some '.jtructiousanu
Robertson wouldn't have it. Then the
President appointed Robertson to collect
'money In some ward in New York City
_H
"That wasn't it," interrupted the first
speaker. "The President told Mr. Rob
ertson to stand at some lock-a dead-lock
they call ll-and see that tho canal-boat
captains paid their tolls. The man who
was put out of s job by Mr. Robertson
getting the situation used to go to school
with Mr. Conkling."
"What I want to know," said a young
lady, "is how could the President order
these men around so ? Didn't I read in
a paper tho other day that Mr. Conkling
was the boss?"
"My sakes! that's funny,".ejaculated
the secretary ; "I beard my brother say
it was a men named Blaine, who carno
here from Canad?, and wanted to mn
the whole country, who caused the dis
turbance, The President made this
Blaine? present of a cabinet organ, and
then he never stopped begging until he
bad got a whole set of luruiture too.
That made the other other men who
didn't get anything jealous."
"What were the guns firing for to
day?" asked the girls on the settee.
"You seo, tm} Oennto helped Robertson
to get this job," answered the first speaker
"and the Half-breed? were co glad they
borrowed tomo cannons."
"WhotirethoHnif-brecdsi Indians?"
"I am not ?ure, but I don't think they
are. They must - bare come here when
tho canal opened."
"Girls," exclaimed tho President of
the meeting, "do you know I think that
firing was a real battle ? i road in the
?nper last week about the 'War ou the
'resident.' Isn't it awful ?"
!'0h, those horrid Half-breeds t" ejac
ulated five voices at once.
"Yes," continued the president,',"and I
believe they are going to be commanded
by that Gen. Mahono, who carno to
Washington with a red shirt and tried to
scare every body,"
"I'm going home," faintly said tho sec
retary. V
"Let us all go," said tho girls on the
settee.
"Ob, I hope wo: won't meet any Half

Use of Mantrres.
A correspondent of the Country Qent?e
man saya there is often much more in
a name than we aro apt to suppose. A
Sapplied word changes our thoughts
d actions ashwell. "Great barmah aa
been done from a misapprehension of tho
effects of manures on inersasing growth.
The word "stimulation" is at the bot
except by feeding them. Men sometimes
take wino or -whiskey or opium, which,
< though1 they give ho nutriment to support
strength, operate on the n?rvea to stimu
late them to abnormal vigor. Bet the
vegetable world indulges in no such ex
cesses, if for lie other reason than that
plants and trees have no nerves to be
stimulated. There is st bh n thing sa
forcing plants, by giving food in such
form as is most easily assimilated ;
but it is food none the less, and not
a stimulant. It is also true that acme
kinds of fertilizers may. after a time, be
come apparently inoperative ; but this
is not like the drug which loses it effects

fertilizers, as salt and gypsam, on cor

UlttTatlniulation, but.the effeet, ia.on the

powerful solvent, and its beneficial effect
is often due, and perhaps always, to ita
ability to make available the latent min
eral fertility nf the soil. By the nee of
aalt the insoluble compounds of potash
and phosphate may be released md put
in shape for the , roo ta of. plants to take
them up. Or it juay bo that salt decom
poses vegetable matter and releases am
monia it? some form available for plant
food. The crop may bc immensely ben
efited by a dressing of salt, and yet
scarcely, a particle of anything in the salt
itself may bc found by analysis of straw
and grain. This, however, cannot. bo
called stimulating the crop, for the planta

deed be said .hat the soil wa? stimulated
to produce more than lt naturally would,
anij.jtbat, in timo, unless real manures
. wero added, these stimulating fertilizers
would ceasn to produce any effect.
But when wo look nt the subject in
this light, we shall find that all manures
act as ?oil stimulants, that is, they help
to decomposes and make available the
plant food already in tho soli. When

acid gas helps to decompose the particles

FOR RESTORING GRAY HAIR TO ITS
NATURAL VITALITY AND COLOR.
IT is a most agreeable dressing, which
is at once harmless and effectual, for

brown, or deep black, as may be desired.
By Hs uso thin hair is thici.on.cd, and

It checks falling of tho hair immedi

cases whero thc glands aro not decayed ;
while to brashy, weak, or otherwise
diseased hair, it imparts vitality and
strength, and renders it pliable.
Tho VIGOR cleanses the scalp, cures
and prevents the formation of dandruff;
and, by its cooling, stimulating, and
soothing properties, it heals most if not
nil of tho humors and diseases peculiar
to the scalp, keeping it cool, clean, and
