When I waa a lad I bold my place
As a gay yoong massa of the doroin&Dt noe;
1 flourished and blcamed aa bright as a rose,
A wallopped the nigger whenever I chose.
I walloppcd the nigger so sirenuoualee, .
That now I am the ruler of a big partee.
When I was mau I hastened to fight
For what my State declared io be right ;
I nhnmeA ?Ls North Of WQSt Stuff I WM
made
Aa I fought at thc head of Mahone'a brigade ;
I fought through the war so vaUantlee,
That now I am the boss of a big parteo.
The war being ended. I learned new tricks,
And took up tho trade of politics ;
I told our folks there was hope for us yet.
And showed them how to get rid o? debt ;
I taught this lesson so constantlee,
That now I am ruler of s big partee.
I came to thc Senate, and Conkllng and
those
Declared I should have whatever I chose ;
I suited, they said, the Republican heart.
And bravely and nobly bsa played my part -
My part I had played so suocessfnllee,
That now I am the ruler of a big partee.
Rebellion atlll is the song I sing,
Repudiation the schema i bring.
And they who needed and bought my aid
Can never go back on the bargain they
made.
That bargain I clinched so carefuller, -
That now I am tho ruler of a big partee.
MRS. BRIGGS' CLERK.
Ue was a tall, thin, starved-looklog
boy, with a little jaoket, the sleeves o?
which crept half way up his arms, and
shat that was nothing bot- a brim; and
when she first saw him he was eating a
crust out of the gutter. She was only a poor
old woman who kept a little shop for
candy and trimmings; but as she said,
be looked a little like' what ber Tom
might, if he bad grown up and been neg
lectcd, and she couldn't stand if. She
ca!led?to him : j
"Come here sonny ;" and the boy came.
Before she could speak again, be said :
"I didn't do it. I ain't so mean."
"Didn't do what?" askci the old wo
man.
"Break your winder," said ibo boy
nodding toward a shattered pane.
"Why, X broke that myself with my
shutter bust night," said the old woman
I'm not strong enough to lift 'em, that's
thc fact. I'm gotting old."
"If I'm round when you shut up, I'll
come and do it for you/' he said. "I'd
just as soon. What'was that you wanted
me for?"
"I wanted to known what you eat that
dry crust out of the gutter for," said
she.
"Hungry,'.'?aid ho. "I've trid to get a
job all day. I'm going to sloop in the
alley over there when it gets too dark for
the policemen to see; and you can't
baie a good night's sleep without
some supper, even if it is dirty."
"I'll give you some that's cleaner,"
?nid the old woman.
"That would be begging," ?aid he/; !
"No," said she, "you cati sweep 'tho
shop and tho pavement, and put up the
shutters for it."
"Very welt," said he. "Thankee, then.
If I sweep up first I'll feel hotter."
Accordingly-she brought him out a
broom, and he did his work well. After*
ward be Ate bis supper with a relish.
That night he slept, not in the alley but
under the old 'woman's counter.''
Uo had told her his story. His namo
was Dick ;- he wai twelve years old and
his father, whom ho had never seen, was
in pi hon for life.
The antec?danla wiro not elevating,
but the boy seerh'J good. The next
morning the old woman engaged a clerk
for her small establishment. The terms
were ?implo-his "living and ft bed under
tho counter."
When the neighbors heard of it, they
were shocked. A street boy-a boy no
one knew I Did Mrs. Briggs really wish
to be murdered in her bea? Did Mrs.
Briggs feel quite safe ? She had sb much
tirse now that abe ?as going to take io
sewing. Dick attended to the shop alto*

ad increased the business by introduc
ing candles, dates, etc. Pennies came lb
ns they never carno io before elnee he
had painted elgns in red and blue ink to
the effect that the real old molasses eau?,
dy was to be had there, and that was the
place for peanuts.
And io the evening, after ?heshep was
.hut up, she began to take bim into her
confidence. Her great dream was to buy
herself into a. certain home for tho
aged. It would coat ber a hundred dol
lars. She had saved three years, and had
fifteen of it. But it cost so much to live
with tea at twenty-five cents a quarter,
and loares so small, and ehe had been
sick, and therewas the doctor and Mrs.
Jones' Martha Jane to be paid for the
minding her and the Hb op. - .After thia
Dick took tho greatest interest in the
savings, and tho winter mouth; increased
them as though he had brought ablese*
ing.
One night in spring tbwy took the bag
from undrr the pillow, and counted what
it held. It was thirty dollars.
"Ano i ll begin to make kites to-mor
row, Mrs. Briggs, and you'll sea the cus
tom that it will bring/'
"You aro a clever boy yourself," said
tho old woman, and pressed his band.
It waa a plumper; hand than lt hid
boen when it picked the crusts from tho
gutter, and ho wore cleon, whole gar
ments, though they were very coarse,
"How wrong tho neighbors were," abe
said. "That boy is tho comfort of roy
life." '
So she went to ted with the treasure
under her pillow and slept. Far on in
the night she was awakened. The room
was utterly darkr-thero was a ray of
light-but she heard a atop on the floor.
"Who iu that?" ehe cried.
There was no answer, but she felt that
nome ono waa leaning 07? her bed.
Then' a hand clasped her throat apd held
her down, and dragged cut the bag of
money, and abe was released. Hali suf
focated, abe for a moment found herself
motionless and bewilders), conscious
only of a draught of air from an open
door, S?d Confused noises.
Then abe sprang to tho door and hur
ried Into tba shop.
"Dick I Dick!" ahe cried. "Dickl
Dick I helpl wake up 1 I'm robbed !"
But there was ro answor. Tho door
into the street was wide open, aud by tho
moonlight that poured through it ehe
saw, as ahe peered under the counter,
that Dick's bed was empty. The boy was
gone. .
Ono! gone i Oh, that was WORM to
poor Granny Briggs than even the low of
the money ; for abo had trusted him, and
he had deceived her. She bad loved him
and ho had abused ber love. The neigh
ber? were right ; she was a fool to trust a
street boy, and bed hseu served rightly
when he had robbed her.
Whoo the dswa broke, tho wise neigh*

find her crying, uni rooking to ?nd fro;
and they told ncr they had told her so,
and aha shook ber hoad. The shop took

was oct winney, after ail. He had come
to bo the only thing she loved, aud- Dick

It was ten tfef?c& f?r*any sat ?otft*

Mrs. Jones from up stairs was "seelo* |cV

suddenly lhere was A Tap on Ibo door,

" Mrs. Brigs*." be said;
"Som? cat want* to oas you at head

he's caught. You'll get your money

And she led Mrs. Brigg? along-pom
Mn. Briggs, she cried al! tho way, and
cared nothing for tho money.. And uoon
they were at their destination ; then, and
not before, the policeman turned to thc
two women.
"He'a pretty bad," he said. "They'll
take bim to the hospital iu an hour. 1
suppose you're prepared fer that. Ho t
nearly beaten to death, you kdow/'
"Did you beat him, you cruel wWteh ?"
?aid Bira. Briggs. *T wouldn't have bad
that done for twice the money. Let him
go with it, ii it's ?ny comfort to him?"
"I beat bim 1" said the usn/ "Why.

"'You shout take Granny's money
from ber,' says he; ard fought like a little
tiger. If It'o your money, old lady, he's
given his lifo foi it, for all I know/'
Then poor old Mrs. Brigg's clapped
ber hands and cried :
"Ob, Dick I Dick I I knew you were
good. I must have te*n crazy to dtubt
you," and then she1 wrung her hands md
cried : "Ob, Dick, for insta paltry blt of
money !" and so she knelt beside th?
patt* face noon the pillow and kissed lt,
and called it tender names.
And Dick, never guessing ber suspi
cions of bim, whispered :
"I was eofraid he'd get off with lt ii
be killed me, Granny, and yon in such
high hopes last night."
He did not know what she meant by
begging bim to forgive her. It would
have fared ill with bim if ho had, for be
waa very near death.
But Dick did not die. Ho got well at
last, and came back to the little shop;
.nd though Granny Briggs had ber sav
ings, abe never went to tho Old Ladles
Home; for long before she died, Dick
waa one of tho most prosperous mer
chants lb the city, ana bis handsome

Captnrlug Monkey*.
The monkeys are frequently captured
in nooses and in traps built in the shape
of houses. The only entrance is a tran
door in the roof, which communicates with
a trigger set upon the ground. Food is
spread about inside, tho monkeys enter,
and skirmishing around, disturb the trig
ger, and the - trap shuts them in. The
third method for catching them is a most
ludicrous one, An old bard cocoanut
is taken and a very small hola made lu
tba abell. Furnished with th io and a
pocketful of boiled-rice, the sportsman
:p.l!lc3 into tho forent and i;lop3 beneath
a tree tenanted by monkeys. Within
full sight of theao Inquisitive spectators
be Orst cafs a little rico and then puts a
quantity iuto the cocoanut with all tho
ostentation possible. The nut is then
laid upon the ground, and the hunter re
I tires to a convenient ambush. The read
er may be sure that no sooner is the man
out of sight than the monkeys race bel
terskelter for the cocoanut. The first arri
vai peeps into it, and, seeing the plentiful
atora or rico Inside, squeezes his hands in
through tho tiny bole and clutches a
handful. Now, so paramount is greed
over every other feeling connected with
monkey nature that notbiog will induce
the creature to relinquish bis hold.
With his hand thus clasped bo cnn not
f?ossibly extract it ; but the thought that
f be leaves gb one ci bis brethren will
obtain tho feast is overpowering. The
sportsman soon appears upon the Bcene;
the unincumbered monkeys fly in all direc
tions, but the unfortunate brute who will
not let the'rice go is thereby handicapped
beyond hope with e. cocoanut as large
as himself--astute of affairs quite fatal
to rapid locomotion, either tevrsstinl or
arboreal. The sequel ia that he falla au
easy capture to tho hinter, a victim to
-b|aown creed.- Even when caught he
reads in the actions of his captors a de
sign to rub him of rice, and bo clutches
it all the harder; and tho very . first
thing he does when the nut Is cracked
and the hand released is to cram Its con
testa luto his mouth. Thoughts of es
capa come afterwads.---?onff>>n Field.
