Mn. EDITOR: A goodly number of people
are very grateful that so many of the secu
lar papers are helping forward the great
?tuse of Temper*.:.This is as it should
bc. The truth is, -io man who cares any
thing for hitnse,f. his family, his country
or hts church, should allow a paper which
upholds whiskey in any way to enter his
house. Thc good people of* the State are
also glad to know that u large number of
the members of the L?gislature are in favor
of prohibition. Let every tuan who wishes
his Stute and country "well; see to it thu:
every candidate who is opposed to it be al
lowed at thc next election to stay al home.
It is astonishing that some men seem to
think tho Legislature has nothing to do
with it. You. Mr. Editor, aaa lawyer and
a member of the Legislature, know that it
is the business of that body to itiaku such
laws tis will protect and Improve the inter
ests of thc people. You made a law-a
wise und good one-punishing men for car
rying concealed weapons. And yet, there
are men who say you have no right to grasp
with the strong orin of the law this t/lant
monster, as with merciless tramp he crushes
widows and orphans and broken-hearted
mothers mulei his feet, and defiantly waves
hit black Hag in the very teeth of the ?tate
authorities. The good people of this coun
ty are becoming sick und tired of being in
sulted and run over by drunken men on
their way from Anderson. Already they
can be heard saying '"tho Town Council of
Anderson is causing nearly all ot>r tron?le
now." And how? By hoisting the flood
gates for a few dollars and Bending the
streams of woe and death all over the coun
try. For a little pay they givo men permis
sion to make others drunk, and then pun
ish them for getting drunk. But if they
burry off from town, it's- all right. Is this
the way to treal sober people in the coun
try? The country people have some rights
us well as others. There was a State prohi
bition convention recently in Haleigh. N.e.,
450 delegates represented every county in
the State. Let thc ball roll on.* Alcohol is
doomed. The grantlest forces of nature
operate slowly anil silently, but surety.
Friends ol* prohibition, work, lt is only a
question of time when this bloated monster
nindi lie a giant corpse at our feet.
Another thing. In the Just issue of your
valuable paper are these words -. '-lt is now
estimated that the forests of America will
he all used up at the end of another thirty
years"-enough to cause alarm to any think
ing man. Why this vast destruction of
timber? In our"Southern land cotton-the
people's master-is ut the bottom of it. lt
is absolutely provoking to see oven the
grand old shade trees wilting and dying
trees thal shaded our mothers and fathers
when they werechildren-underthestrokes
of thc axe, all to get n few moro cotton .
stalks. Shade trees, garden spots, gross j
lawns and even bottom land-where lhere ;
aught to be corn-arc giving way to cotton. |
No wonder we have drouths; no wonder
corn is scarce; no wonder the merchants
are growing rich at the expense of the
farmers. Many farmers are destroying by
wholesale their timber just because the
renee law, which is a ga .d thing, tuukes it
so easy to kill and bum the titulier, as there
are no rails to split or fehcea to build, save ;
for pasture. So easy to ruin the timber
and then-make cotton. It is almost us
hard to convince some mon that cotton is
ruining them as to satisfy them that the
poisonous stuffs called "pure liquors" will .
eventually be rooted from thc world.
Would that we could hear from "T. H.
R." more frequently. Ho "struck the nail
on the head" when warning the farmers to
spare the old field pines.
One thing moro. Why will some men
run their furrows when plowing right out
into the road? W. A. H.
A Car-I.
